BRIN, ASPI to support stem cell research in Indonesia

The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Indonesian Stem Cell Association (ASPI) will jointly support stem cell research collaboration and integration in the health sector in Indonesia.

“BRIN will facilitate researchers to conduct research and carry out collaboration to support research progress in the medical field, especially in the field of stem cell product development,” Head of BRIN’s Health Research Organization Ni Luh Putu Indi Dharmayanti said in a written statement received here on Friday.

For this matter, BRIN and ASPI will collaborate on conducting seminars and workshops as forums for the exchange and dissemination of information and ideas related to stem cells, cells, and their derivatives, she added.

She said she hoped that the activity will facilitate the exchange and dissemination of information and ideas to support stem cell research in Indonesia, integrate various parties related to stem cell research in Indonesia, and support collaboration among researchers to enhance the progress of stem cell research in Indonesia.

According to Dharmayanti, BRIN has produced a number of publications and patents related to stem cell research, including on alginate-based microencapsulation technology that can maintain mesenchymal stem cell viability for application in chronic wound therapy.

In addition, BRIN has released publications related to cytokines and growth factors that can differentiate mesenchymal stem cells into patent-registered osteocyte cells and patent-registered chondrocyte cells.

Moreover, the BRIN research team has carried out research on mesenchymal stem cells related to premature aging.

As per the Journal of Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine, a stem cell is a cell that has the ability to renew itself (self-renewal) and the ability to differentiate into various types of cells.

According to the Journal of Stem Cell Research and Therapy, although stem cells are undifferentiated cells, they can produce specialized cells, such as heart muscle cells, blood cells, or nerve cells.
