Support legal action in assault case against official’s son: minister

The case of violence which befell D, 17, in Pesanggarahan, South Jakarta, has become a concern of ours, who every day deal with efforts to prevent violence against children.

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Expressing concern for D, 17, the victim of a recent assault in South Jakarta, Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Bintang Puspayoga has voiced support for the legal action initiated by police in the case.

“The case of violence which befell D, 17, in Pesanggarahan, South Jakarta, has become a concern of ours, who every day deal with efforts to prevent violence against children,” Minister Puspayoga said in a statement received here on Saturday.

The case must serve as a lesson for parents to pay more attention to their children’s growth and development, she added.

“Particularly in the teenage years. During that period, psychologically, the children are going through a phase in which they seek for their identity; if they are not guided nor given a good environment for their growth and development, it is feared that there would be some issues in the children’s psyche during their transition phase from a child to grown-up,” she elaborated.

Understanding teenagers’ health during their transition to adulthood is crucial so that they can have safe, good, and delightful life experiences that would last a long time, she added.

“Because if they go through violence, which could strike shame or hurt due to others’ treatment, particularly close ones, then the risk of revenge as a way to show identity is likely to happen,” she said.

Hence, ensuring healthy familial relations, school environments, and social circles is important to ensure stable mental health during adolescence, the minister noted.

The assault she was referring to occurred at 8:30 p.m. local time on February 20, 2023. South Jakarta Police Department has named MDS and S as suspects in the alleged assault of D and placed them under detention.

Based on their urine tests, which came back negative for drugs, they committed the assault while fully conscious or in full awareness.

On February 24, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati sacked RAT, MDS’ father, from his position as an official at the ministry’s Directorate General of Tax, in the aftermath of the battery case.
