Jakarta (ANTARA) – The police fired water cannon to disperse crowds in front of Plaza Kenari Mas in Central Jakarta on Tuesday as part of the stringent measures to uphold rules during the emergency public activity restrictions (PPKM).
Chief of the Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police Senior Commissioner Hengki Haryadi stated on Tuesday that the police had resorted to the firm step after several warnings issued had gone unheeded.
“Mall Kenari Mas remained open. We had several times called on the crowds to disperse, but they did not,” he remarked.
The police’s act to disperse the crowds went viral on social media. The emergency PPKM, launched on July 3, 2021, will last until July 20
During the enforcement of emergency PPKM, police officers are necessitated to take firm action against crowds that can potentially become a source of COVID-19 transmission.
Jakarta reported the highest single-day spike in cases at 9,439 on Tuesday followed by 7,239 in West Java and 4,048 in Central Java. However, the Indonesian capital also witnessed the highest daily recoveries at 6,100.
Indonesia witnessed another record increase in daily coronavirus infections, with 31,189 cases reported on Tuesday, which took the total tally to 2,345,018, according to the COVID-19 Response Task Force.
