Police chief asks ranks to commit to supporting govt policies

Chief of the National Police (Polri), General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, has instructed his rank and file to commit to supporting the government’s policies, including the agenda of economic recovery.

“What must Polri do to direct the government’s policies?” he asked in a written statement issued in Jakarta on Friday.

One of the challenges facing the government is the COVID-19 pandemic, he said.

Efforts to handle and control the trend of COVID-19 positive cases need the involvement of the Indonesian military (TNI) and Polri, he added.

In addition, the global situation, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, has also begun to have an impact on Indonesia even as the country prepares for the 2024 general elections, he noted.

Handling the threat of land and forest fires also needs the involvement of TNI and Polri to minimize their impact on the community, he said.

“The role of our colleagues to show up in the public (is necessary). If the public’s confidence in Polri is low, Polri will find it hard to face all of them,” he remarked.

Polri must continue to support various government policies to maintain national economic growth, which stood at 5.44 percent in the second quarter of 2022.

In addition, Polri must also continue to safeguard the self-reliance the country has achieved in rice production in the past three years, he said.

“This (success) is attributable to the development of strategic projects, including dams, reservoirs, and infrastructures, and Polri must maintain them because they serve as a key to all of these,” he added.
