KSP to monitor implementation of Presidential instruction on poverty

The Presidential Staff Office (KSP) will oversee the implementation of Presidential Instruction No. 4 of 2022 on Accelerating the Elimination of Extreme Poverty, the chief of Presidential Staff, Moeldoko, has assured.

While attending the launch of the Presidential Instruction, here on Tuesday, he emphasized that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is committed to eliminating extreme poverty as soon as possible and has changed the target year to 2024 from 2030.

“By 2024, extreme poverty should be zero. For this reason, the Presidential Staff Office will fully supervise this Presidential Instruction. If it does not work, it will make a note,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of other empowerment programs, such as the Agrarian Reform program, under which the government is not only distributing land but also striving to make beneficiaries independent and empowered.

“I see that society is (finding it) difficult to escape extreme poverty. Hence, they require help, namely with programs that are empowering,” he said.

The social assistance provided by the government is important, but community empowerment has become much more crucial, he added.

“Do not keep giving the fish, but teach them how to get the fish,” he remarked.

According to Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy, the Presidential Instruction will be realized through several key programs.

The programs will include the distribution of social assistance and subsidies, the implementation of empowerment programs that will aim to increase beneficiaries’ income, and the construction of basic infrastructures, such as sanitation, clean water, and drinking water, he said.

“With social assistance, we reduce the spending of people with extreme poverty. On the other hand, we are empowering them to increase their income,” Effendy explained.
