The Jayapura Police Department has prepared a “house for reading and writing” to assist the Jayapura district government, Papua, in offering basic education services to residents.
Chief of the department, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Fredrickus Maclarimboen, said that the house, dubbed Rumah Gabus (House of Reading and Writing Movement), seeks to eliminate illiteracy among Papuan people.
“The only dream of the Jayapura Police Department is for Papua to have no more illiterate generation,” he remarked in Sentani on Monday.
According to Maclairmboen, the Rumah Gabus is the first of its kind in Jayapura district. In the future, it will also cater to Papuan mothers, apart from children.
“We will collaborate with competent stakeholders to teach mamas here, (those) who want to learn to make creative products or innovations so that they can provide economic benefits for their families,” he said.
The house, an initiative of his administration, will offer benefits as it would suppress the rate of illiteracy in their jurisdiction, he added.
Chief of Kemtuk Police Department, First Police Inspector Usriyanto, seconded Maclarimboen’s statement, saying that at Rumah Gabus, children aged 16–17 years could take packages A, B, or C for their studies.
“If you are willing to be taught, come to the Gabus House to learn to read and write, which is done three times a week,” he said.
Head of the Kemtuk sub-district, Evans Yoku, commended the Jayapura Police Department’s initiative.
Yoku deemed Rumah Gabus ideal to assist his administration in offering basic education services.
“Representing the Jayapura district government and the head of Jayapura district, we appreciate the Jayapura Police Department, who have helped support this government. It is an honor for Kemtuk district people,” he remarked.
The house was inaugurated on April 28, 2022, in Kemtuk sub-district, Jayapura district, by Maclarimboen.
