Clean Up The World to preserve marine ecosystem: ex-minister

Former marine affairs and fisheries minister Susi Pudjiastuti said, “Clean Up the World 2021” event plays a significant role in raising awareness on the preservation of marine resources and ecosystem.

“The event is not merely focus on beach cleaning. But more than that, to grow public awareness on the importance of marine resources and ecosystem,” Pudjiastuti said in a statement here on Sunday.

Marine ecosystem conservation, she said, would protect the interest of people living in the coastal area and improve fishers’ welfare.

The former minister said, she would continue to actively defend the country’s sovereignty values and sustainability in marine sector, although she is not in the ministerial position anymore.

The commitment to preserve marine ecosystem sustainability is a longlife duty regardless one’s position and short-term interest, she added.

“Clean Up The World” is an annual social event to preserve the environment, organized by PT Suzuki Indomobil Sales (SIS) since 2015.

This year, the event was held in Pangandaran Beach in West Java on December 11-12, in cooperation with Pandu Laut Nusantara (archipelago boyscout), the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) at the Environment and Forestry Ministry, and Pangandaran District.

“We always want to actively participate in the preservation of environment, especially the ocean, that is facing the threat of sea pollution. Therefore, we organize the Clean Up The World program annually in various regions,” Sales & Marketing Outboard Motor Section Head PT SIS Aceng Ulumudin said.

“This year we conduct it in Pangandaran, a region that is active in beach cleaning activities,” he said.

More than 400 people, including students, police personnel, local residents and tourists, took part in the beach clean up, mangrove planting and release of horseshoe crab and glass eel.
