Central Java’s residents urged to stay alert to extreme weather

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to residents in Central Java to stay vigilant of the impact of extreme weather which potentially occurs in certain parts of the province on January 9-11, 2023.

The appeal was echoed by Head of the Technician Group of BMKG’s Tunggul Wulung Cilacap Class III Meteorology Station (Stamet) Teguh Wardoyo here on Sunday, as he got the forecast regarding the extreme weather potentials from the Ahmad Yani Semarang Stamet.

The Ahmad Yani Semarang Stamet predicted that the districts of Tegal, Pekalongan, Batang, and Kendal could experience extreme weather on January 9 to 11, 2023.

While, the districts and cities of Magelang and Semarang as well as the cities of Tegal and Pekalongan may experience extreme weather on January 9 to 10, 2023.

In the same period, such that condition is also projected to happen in the districts of Brebes, Cilacap, Banyumas, Purbalingga, Banjarnegara, Wonosobo, Temanggung, Pemalang, Batang, Kendal, Blora, Pati, and Kudus.

Meanwhile, the extreme weather may occur in the districts of Grobogan, Boyolali, Sragen, and Karanganyar only on January 9, 2023.

Then, Rembang District is predicted to have extreme weather condition only on January 10, 2023.

Wardoyo has stated that the extreme weather conditions can be triggered, among others, by atmospheric dynamics and relatively warm sea surface temperatures with an anomaly of 0.5 to 2.5 degrees Celsius in the Java Sea, which can increase the evaporation potential.

“Relatively high humidity and strong local (meteorological variable) lability have triggered the formation of rain clouds in some regions of Indonesia, especially in Central Java Province,” he continued.

He has said that these factors can cause moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and strong winds in the province on January 9-11, 2023.

Thus, Wardoyo has asked the community to be vigilant because the extreme weather can trigger various hydrometeorological disasters, such as floods, flash floods, hail, landslides, and strong winds.

“Especially to people living in areas prone to hydrometeorological disaster, we urge them to stay alert and increase their preparedness to mitigate the impact of the disaster,” he remarked.
