West Java breaks PON record in women’s 400 m relay

Mimika, Papua (ANTARA) – The West Java team snatched the gold medal in the women’s 4×100 meters relay at Papua’s 20th National Sports Week (PON) on Wednesday and broke the PON record for the event.

Raden Roselin Fika, Tyas Murtiningsih, Erna Nuryanti, and Ulfa Silpiana won the race, held at the Mimika Sport Complex, Mimika District, in 45.67 seconds, breaking the Jakarta team’s record of 45.93 seconds at the 17th PON in East Kalimantan.

Meanwhile, the East Java team — Susi Dewi Wulandari, Eka Cahaya Ningrum, Serafi Anelies Unani, and Try Setyo Utami — won the silver medal with a time of 46.36 seconds.

The bronze medal was pocketed by the Jakarta team — Ken Ayuthaya, Jeany Nuraini, Liza Putri, and Emilia Nova — which crossed the finish line in 46.58 seconds.

Silpiana told ANTARA that she was very grateful for their achievement. She said the team had targeted to break the record.

“Alhamdulillah (praise be to God), we had been a very solid team and I was able to run well,” she remarked.

In fact, the team was lacking in preparation as she was unable to train for one and a half months after contracting COVID-19, she informed.

However, thanks to a strong fighting spirit and mutual trust, the team could give its best for West Java, she said.

“Alhamdulillah, we can get through all of this,” she added.

Meanwhile, Murtiningsih said that the gold medal and the record were dedicated to their coaches, parents, and the entire West Java community.
