Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani has confirmed that the Personal Data Protection (PDP) Bill will be ratified in the House’ plenary session on Tuesday, September 20. “The results of the meeting of the Deliberative Unit and the leadership meeting of the House of Representatives have decided to bring the Personal Data Protection Bill to the plenary session tomorrow to be ratified as law,” she said here on Monday. Level II discussions or decision making on the bill would be hosted at the 5th Plenary Meeting of House of Representatives for the Session Year 2022-2023. Maharani said that she expected that the new regulation would protect every citizen from all kinds of misuse of personal data. “The ratification of the Personal Data Protection Bill will be a milestone for Indonesia in protecting the personal data of its citizens from all forms of crime in today’s digital era,” she stressed. Maharani mentioned that the final draft of the bill, which had been discussed since 2016, consisted of 371 Inventory Lists (DIM) and produced 16 chapters and 76 articles. The number of articles in the bill had increased by 4 articles from the government’s initial proposal, which was 72 articles, issued at the end of 2019. “This PDP Bill will provide legal assurance so that every citizen, without exception, (has full control) over their personal data. Thus, there will be no more tears from the people due to online loans that they don’t ask for, or doxxing that makes people uncomfortable,” she said. Maharani said she expected the Government to enact the bill after it was passed. Thus the derivative rules, including the establishment of a supervisory agency that will protect the public’s personal data, could be formed right away. “Through the PDP Law, the state will guarantee the people’s right to the security of their personal data,” she noted. She pointed out that the PDP Bill would serve as a guide for ministries, agencies, and policy makers in maintaining a healthy national digital security climate. Maharani also commended the government’s cooperation in drafting the PDP Bill with the House of Representatives. “On behalf of the leadership of the House of Representatives, I also thank the experts and everyone of the nation who contributed to providing input so that the PDP Bill can become a good legal product,” she added.
