Kominfo pushes three strategies to handle negative online content

The Communication and Informatics Ministry (Kominfo) has said it is continuing to push three key strategies, from the upstream to the downstream level, for handling negative content in the digital space.

“We will bolster human resources, we will update technology, and we will continue to monitor its management in order to keep it relevant with the development of existing challenges,” the ministry’s spokesperson Dedy Permadi said here, Thursday.

He remarked that the challenges to maintaining a positive digital space have arisen due to increasing interactions in the digital space.

Digital literacy, which has not yet spread to the entire population, is also compounding the problem, he added.

To expand digital literacy and reduce negative content end, the ministry is pushing its three key strategies, he said.

In terms of human resources, improvement of digital literacy capability should be expedited among the public and those managing personal data as well as digital content, he added.

The ministry will also update its content moderation technology by building a technological development device and system called Electronic System Control Management (TKPPSE), he informed.

“The ministry will continue the effort for preserving a clean and beneficial digital space through content moderation,” Permady affirmed.

The TKPSSE will be made fully operational next year to facilitate and improve negative content handling in the digital space, he informed.

The ministry will continue to update the management of negative content handling, starting from the level of regulations, standards of operation, to applicable laws, he added.

“At the downstream level, the ministry also supports the law enforcement authorities in processing legal violations within the digital space,” he said.

In connection to negative content handling, the ministry removed 565,449 pieces of content that violated regulations from various sites and social media in 2021, he informed.

In addition, it handled 1,773 cases of hoaxes or disinformation in general and 723 hoaxes related to COVID-19, he said.

Meanwhile, a total of 43 personal data protection cases were handled by the ministry this year, nine of which were investigated, with the violators penalized, he informed. Twenty-four of the cases are still in the handling process, he added.
