Consistently called for declaration on gender equality: W20

Women 20 (W20) Indonesia has been striving to encourage G20 leaders to issue a declaration on the importance of gender equality, W20 Indonesia chair Hadriani Uli Silalahi said at the W20 Post Summit.

“The G20’s focus on gender equality needs to be monitored and evaluated regularly. W20 Indonesia has consistently called on G20 leaders to issue a declaration focusing on the importance of gender equality,” she informed here on Monday.

Established during Turkey’s G20 Presidency in 2015, W20 is one of the G20 engagement groups, which is focused on discussing and promoting women’s empowerment and gender equality.

In 2022, under Indonesia’s Presidency, W20 raised the issues of non-discrimination and equality, women-owned and led micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), gender equitable health response, rural women, and women with disabilities.

At the last W20 meeting, Indonesia guaranteed the implementation of four main agendas, specifically delegating W20’s role to the wider community in order to contribute to the surrounding environment and ensuring that the W20 communiqué is well-translated to G20 leaders.

In addition, the W20 meeting provided recommendations for empowering women to G20 leaders, G20 Sherpa groups, women’s organizations, academicians, stakeholders, and the public, as well as carried out the handover from the W20 Indonesia committee to the W20 India delegation.

Meanwhile, W20 Indonesia co-chair Dian Siswarini said the Post Summit event would continue to strengthen W20 Indonesia’s recommendations.

“Since W20 Indonesia has officially submitted the W20 communiqué in July, I hope that this Post Summit event will continue to strengthen our recommendations so that our demands will be heard by world leaders and be part of the upcoming G20 Summit discussion,” she added.

The W20 Indonesia communiqué contains recommendations that highlight the interests of women and young girls that have become a significant focus of Indonesia’s G20 presidency.

W20 Indonesia has also urged the government to follow up on its commitment to implementing the G20 road map towards and even beyond the Brisbane Goals.

It has also asked the government to create a G20 gender data network and a dashboard containing the W20 meeting results and develop and improve the National Strategy for Gender Equity and Equality (NSGEE).
