Sports Minister sets West Java as center for coaching young athletes

Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali has established West Java Province as the center for coaching young talents in the national sports design.

“As an appreciation from the central government for the (West Java’s achievements in sports), we have designated West Java as a center for coaching young talents in the national sports design,” Amali said in a statement obtained here on Sunday.

The establishment was based on many victories achieved by West Java, especially in the National Sports Week PON XIX and PON XX where West Java became the general champion in a row. In addition, West Java also contributes many national athletes who excel in the international arena.

“We pay special attention to West Java because it has shown good mentoring that is evidenced by achievements,” Amali said after attending the Inauguration of West Java Indonesian Motor Association (IMI) Board members for the 2021-2025 period at the West Hall of Gedung Sate Bandung.

According to him, the key to West Java’s success is consistency in the athletes coaching and support of adequate sports infrastructure. Moreover, West Java now has a Sports Science Laboratory at the Indonesia University of Education (UPI).

“It was not easy to achieve it as mentoring is a must,” Amali commented.

Furthermore, Amali even revealed that West Java is currently experiencing a surplus in athletes. He said, almost all provinces sent athletes mentored by West Java during the PON XX National Games implementation in Papua.

“I found the surplus when I gave medals for other provinces’ (athletes) in PON Papua. I asked them where they were from, and it turned out it was West Java. This was not only in one sports branch, so I concluded West Java has a surplus of athletes,” he said.

Amali also expressed hopes that with great coaching and a number of talents, West Java can be the main contributor for representing Indonesia in the Olympics.

“West Java must be the main contributor in the Olympics event which is our target,” he said.

Govt plans more base transceiver stations in Jayawijaya

The Indonesian government is planning to build several base transceiver stations (BTS) in Jayawijaya district, Papua province, to help villagers get easy access to the Internet, an official has said.

Twenty of the 246 base transceiver stations that will be constructed in Jayawijaya district have been completed, Chief of the Jayawijaya District Communication and Informatics Office Arkilaus Windesi said here on Saturday.

“This year, we will try to prioritize (the construction of) base transceiver stations in border sub-districts so that local people can directly benefit from them,” he said.

The BTS construction had been obstructed since some local residents had not accepted the governments’ plan to offer the facility in their villages, he added.

“Some members of the community had limited knowledge. Earlier, they could not accept (BTS) but when we gave them good understanding about the advantage of BTS they could accept them,” he said.

With the local people accepting the construction of base transceiver stations, there will be no problem about customary rights for building them, he added.

“Up till now, the construction is still going on thanks to the support of the district head, sub-district heads, and village heads who have given understanding to the public,” he said.

Several materials for the construction of BTS have been sent from outside Papua to Jayawijaya, he informed.

“One of the advantages of base transceiver stations is that they can help students in the villages and sub-districts to find learning materials. Moreover, if they are studying at university, they can finish their assignments more quickly,” he said.

West Aceh still prone to forest, land fires: BPBD

The West Aceh District Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) emphasized that the West Aceh region is still prone to forest and land fires.

“This condition occurs because most of the burned land was in peat areas,” West Aceh BPBD Acting Head Mukhtaruddin said in Meulaboh, Aceh on Sunday.

In February, he said, the agency had managed to extinguish peatland fires in West Aceh which spread across three separate locations: Peunaga Cut Village and Ranto Panyang Timur Village in Meureubo Sub-district, and one point in Ujong Beurasok, Lapang Village, Johan Pahlawan Sub-district, West Aceh District.

“The total area burned in West Aceh District in February 2022 was 1.49 hectares,” Mukhtaruddin pointed out.

He emphasized that his team will always be ready to extinguish fires, even small scale ones.

“Because if it is not handled immediately, it could spread to a wider area,” he said.

Therefore, West Aceh BPBD appealed to all communities not to conduct land burning activities to avoid land or forest fires in the area, he said.

Earlier, on February 25, 2022, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) had detected two hotspots in the Aceh region that have the risks of experiencing forest and land fires.

“Throughout the day, two hotspots were detected in the Aceh region, so we urge residents to be aware of fires,” the Head of Sultan Iskandar Muda Aceh Besar BMKG Class I Data and Information Section, Zakaria Ahmad, explained in Banda Aceh.

The two hotspots were detected in Trumon Timur Sub-district, South Aceh District, with a medium confidence level, which was resulted from the monitoring by Terra, Aqua, and Suomi NPP satellite sensors.

According to Ahmad, drought had also hit some districts/cities so land and forest fire was very likely to happen, especially in peat areas.

Saudi Crown Prince reaffirms commitment to Nusantara development

Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan received a form of commitment to the development of Nusantara Capital from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during his visit to Riyadh.

In a recent post on Pandjaitan’s personal Instagram account @luhut.pandjaitan as seen here on Sunday, he explained that Prince Mohammed bin Salman will join the Sovereign Wealth Fund Indonesia Investment Authority (INA).

“I became more optimistic when I heard that he wanted Saudi Arabia to contribute to the development of Nusantara Capital City, and more importantly, Saudi Arabia will join the Sovereign Wealth Fund Indonesia (INA),” he said.

According to Pandjaitan, he took the initiative to form a unified team that will leave for Riyadh next week to follow up on the commitment.

He detailed, the Indonesian government intends to immediately plan for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to visit Indonesia before the month of Ramadan.

“I took the initiative to form an integrated team that will depart for Riyadh next week, to follow up all of our talks today, so that we can directly prepare a visit by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Indonesia before Ramadan,” he said.

In his post, Pandjaitan also recounted his experience of being hosted warmly by Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He was invited to a dinner in the Royal Palace’s courtyard along with senior cabinet members of Saudi Arabia.

Pandjaitan also said that he has known the Prince for the past two years and was quite intense in communicating even only through Whatsapp messages.

“Another mystery of life for me because according to the Indonesian Ambassador, Prince Mohammed bin Salman very rarely receives guests from overseas, except guests from neighboring Gulf countries,” he wrote.

Furthermore, he also showed a gift he received from the Prince. The gift is kiswah or a piece of Kaaba cloth and a Kaaba key replica.

“Trust must be placed before everything. Our background of religion, race, and ethnicity is not an issue, as long as we have the same interest that prioritizes the humanity and welfare of all nations to make the world a better place for our grandchildren in the future,” Pandjaitan concluded.

Strong Winds Hit Indonesia’s Capital, Satellite Cities, Killing One

Strong winds hit Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta and its satellite cities yesterday, killing one man, damaging houses and public facilities, local media reported.

The man, who was a driver of an app-based motorcycle taxi, reportedly died after being hit by a falling road signboard, in Bekasi district, one of Jakarta’s satellite cities, the district’s Head of Transportation Agency, Deni Setiawan, said.

“He died from a severe injury on his head. There was one more person who was also hit by the road signboard. He has been admitted to a hospital due to a serious injury,” Setiawan added.

In Jakarta, strong winds reportedly made dozens of trees, billboards, road signboards and ceilings in malls fall down, causing heavy traffic in most parts of the capital, according to local news outlets.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said, it warned residents over “potentials of heavy rains, strong winds and lightning across the areas from day to night.”

“The strong winds were caused by convective clouds, such as cumulonimbus, moving from the east to the west,” BMKG’s Head of Weather Prediction and Early Warning Division, Miming Saepudin, said, in a press release.
