Preparing for a meeting to solve pollution from plastic – Marine Department

Cabinet approves Thai stance discussing measures on plastic pollution and the marine environment. according to the resolutions of the United Nations Environment Assembly Six Thai delegates attended the event in Paris on 28 May – 2 June.

Miss Traisulee Trisoranakul, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, said that the Cabinet meeting (Cabinet) approved the negotiation framework and Thailand’s stance. The second meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Internationally Binding Measures on Plastic Pollution and the Marine Environment was held in Paris, France. Between May 28 – June 2, 2023, for intergovernmental negotiations, the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), the highest level UN conference forum in setting global environmental policy. with member countries of the United Nations Representatives from various sectors participated.

Deputy spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office said that at the UNEA meeting in March 2022, the resolution was adopted. “Stop Plastic Pollution: With Internationally Binding Measures” with the establishment of an intergovernmental negotiating committee. to negotiate and draw up relevant measures There will be a total of 5 negotiations. The first time took place between 26 Nov. – 2 Dec. ’22 in the Eastern Republic of Uruguay. The measure is scheduled to be completed in 2024. The completed measure will be proposed at the Diplomatic Conference by 2025.

Ms. Traisulee said that the second meeting between 28 May and 2 June will have an agenda for approval and important decisions such as 1. Requirements and scope of the draft measures 2. Accounts Lists some of the most problematic and dangerous plastics that should be discontinued, reduced or limited. 3. List of hazardous substances added to plastics that should be discontinued from production and use. 4. Proposals of measures, etc. Negotiations and attitudes of Thailand It was deemed important that it set the scope of negotiations on various issues and was an internal document of Thailand that served as a framework for such meetings. It is not a new treaty. Therefore, there is no point to consider about the contract under section 178 of the constitution.

Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office said the cabinet also acknowledged the composition of the Thai delegation for the meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiation Committee. which consists of representatives from relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a total of 6 people, with Ms. Thiraporn Wiriwuttikorn, a specialist in noise and hazardous waste management.
