Govt prioritizing vaccinating healthy animals against FMD

Jakarta The Ministry of Agriculture is prioritizing the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccination program for farm animals that are still healthy and have high economic value, an official from the ministry has said.

“This vaccination is aimed at healthy animals. Thus, the vaccination targets are animals that have high economic value, in this case, to secure assets,” director of animal health at the ministry, Ira Firgorita, said, according to a statement released here on Saturday.

The nationwide vaccination will prioritize breeding cows and dairy cows, she informed. The vaccination will also be prioritized for healthy farm animals in FMD-affected zones.

A mechanism will be implemented for the vaccination: healthy animals located within a radius of two kilometers from infected animals in FMD-affected areas will be inoculated, Firgorita said.
