Search extended for 17 missing passengers of Kupang ferry fire

The search operation for 17 missing passengers of the Cantika Express 77 ferry that caught fire in the waters of Naikliu, Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, has been extended for three days.

“The search operation for the missing passengers of the Cantika Express 77 ferry has been extended for the next three days,” Chief of Kupang Search and Rescue (SAR) Office I Putu Sudayana remarked here on Sunday.

The extension of the search operation to Wednesday, November 2, was agreed at an evaluation meeting of the joint team of SAR workers who rescued the Cantika Express 77 passengers. The search operation had been going on for seven days on October 24-30, 2022.

The evaluation meeting was attended by representatives from the Navy, Water and Air Police, East Nusa Tenggara Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), state-owned insurer Jasa Raharja, and Kupang Port Authority and Harbormaster Office (KSOP).

“The search is carried out by the SAR team to find the 17 missing victims,” Sudayana said.

According to Kupang Search and Rescue Agency, there were 362 victims of the Cantika Express 77 ferry that caught fire on Monday, October 24. Of that number, 325 people were found safe, 20 people died, while 17 passengers were still declared missing.

He added that the joint SAR team will try to search for the missing passengers around Semau Island and Kupang Bay.

Earlier, on Saturday, October 29, a team of divers had been deployed to search for victims suspected of being trapped in the wrecks of the Cantika Express 77 ferry.

“We are mobilizing Kupang SAR to find the victims of the Cantika Express 77 ferry who are still missing,” Sudayana informed.

However, no victims were found trapped in the burned shipwrecks.

He explained that some part of the ferry was still intact because the hull was underwater so it did not burn.

Ministry prepares job skills through 2022 Vocational Training Festival

The government continues to prepare Indonesians for having job skills by holding a Vocational Training Festival from October 28 to 30, 2022, according to Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah.

“The public enthusiasm (about the event) shows that people want to see for themselves, how the government is ready to prepare competencies for the citizens,” she said at the 2022 Vocational Training Festival here on Sunday.

More than 100 thousand visitors have come to the 2022 National Vocational Training Festival and Job Fair, which was hosted at the Jakarta Convention Center, she said.

Among those coming to the event were graduates of vocational education and training, students, instructors, lecturers and teachers, practitioners, professional associations or industry associations, observers of vocational education and vocational training, and the general public.

The government is ready to help people who either learn new skills, and need upskilling or reskilling, she said, adding that there were around 21,000 job vacancies for workers. Moreover, 172 companies directly came to participate in the job fair.

The purpose of this event is to bring together job seekers with job providers directly, so that it was expected that they can establish good two-way communication and develop a work ecosystem that is comfortable for both parties, in addition to using the SIAPKerja, the ministry’s initiated digital application to assist job seekers.

Moreover, it aims to address companies’ complaints about their difficulty in finding workers with digital competences.

“There, (the segments are available, like) either they need the opportunity to conduct training or (if) they already have training but need competency certification, or whether they need a job opportunity, in SIAPKerja (app), those are available,” the minister remarked.

Minister Fauziyah further explained that the 2022 Vocational Training Festival is hosted in October by considering the needs of fresh graduates from universities or high schools, vocational schools, and its equivalent.

The event organizer also consider the needs of groups of people who do not go to college but have yet to get jobs, so that it may help them find jobs that aligns with their competencies.

“So it’s good month to upgrade the (competency), (which) can be done through skilling; or for those who are already working in the industry and need up-skilling or re-skilling,” she added again.

The ministry will continue to strive for innovation, in response to automation and digitization.

Therefore, she expected that the people at large could participate in the event in accordance with their needs. “So we want to compel the public (convince them) that we are ready to face digitalization. You can see for yourself, the innovations that we do at this vocational training festival,” she said.

Soetta Airport tightens supervision to anticipate COVID-19 surge

Soekarno Hatta (Soetta) International Airport in Tangerang, Banten has tightened supervision of the arrival of international travelers in an effort to anticipate a surge in COVID-19 cases.

“The principle is the same, we supervise (the movement of arriving passengers) whatever variant that is, because the most important thing is carrying out health protocols,” Head of the Port Health Office (KKP) of Soekarno Hatta Airport Naning Pranoto said here on Sunday.

Pranoto said his party is tightening surveillance following a surge in COVID-19 cases in Singapore which reached thousands of cases per day.

He revealed that the surveillance process is carried out by readying thermal scanners at the arrival gates at the airport.

If there are passengers traveling from abroad with body temperature above 37.5 degrees Celsius, they will immediately be directed to take a swab test.

“The thermal scanner is at the forefront in the early detection of passengers, whether they are exposed to COVID-19 or not,” he said.

According to him, a PCR test will be carried out by local health officials for passengers who tested positive for the swab test.

“Then, (if) the PCR result is positive, the examination would proceed to find out which variant is conducted,” he explained.

In addition to the installation of thermal scanners at the terminals, the Port Health Office also conducts examinations related to the symptoms of passengers.

“If there are passengers who complain of having flu and temperatures above 37 degrees Celsius, then the officers will observe further,” he said.

Meanwhile, there were new 2,717 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Indonesia on October 30, 2022.

To strengthen the implementation of health protocols and to prevent a spike in COVID-19 cases, the government emphasized the importance of increasing the coverage of booster vaccination ahead of the Christmas and 2023 New Year holidays.

Two Indonesians survive Seoul’s Halloween crowd surge: embassy

The Indonesian Embassy in Seoul confirmed on Sunday that two Indonesian citizens survived the Halloween crowd surge on Saturday evening but should be admitted to local hospitals for medical treatment.

The two Indonesians, only identified by their initials AR and CA, however, had been discharged from the hospitals after receiving the medical treatment, the embassy said in a statement on Sunday.

“AR has been discharged from Korea University’s Anam Hospital on Sunday morning while CA who sustained a minor injury had left Seobuk Hospital, and returned home on Saturday evening,” the embassy said.

The embassy further confirmed that none of Indonesians was among at least 151 people who got killed in the Halloween crowd surge that occurred in Seoul’s popular nightclub district of Itaewon on Saturday evening.

The embassy, however, continued to coordinate with local authorities to obtain latest information on the victims.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the “sudden surge of Halloween crowds that instantly packed a narrow 4-meter-wide downhill alley in Itaewon District” killed at least 151 people and wounded 82 others.

Among the victims were 19 foreigners, including those from China, Iran, Norway and Uzbekistan, Yonhap said.

The Iranian Embassy in Seoul had confirmed the deaths of four Iranians in the Itaewon stampede, according to CNN.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol responded to the stampede that Yonhap recorded as the deadliest accident in South Korea since the sinking of the ferry Sewol in 2014 that killed 304 high-school students and others.

As reported by the Korea Times, President Yoon Suk-yeol declared a period of national mourning from Sunday until Saturday in response to the Halloween crush that he said “truly tragic”.

President Yoon Suk-yeol said the “tragedy and disaster should never have happened.”

“As president, who is responsible for the people’s lives and safety, my heart is heavy and I struggle to cope with my grief,” he was quoted by the Korea Times as saying in a statement on Sunday.

Loving Indonesia from young people in forefront

About 1,145 kilometers away from Jakarta, on an island northwards of Indonesia, a group of young people recited the Youth Pledge — the pledge that had been echoed by the nation’s founders 94 years ago.

The howling gale, the crash of waves upon the sea, and the high energy swell in the South China Sea cannot restrain the spirit of nationalism of the young people in the Indonesian islands of Natuna.

“Firstly, we, the sons and daughters of Indonesia, vow to recognize one motherland, Indonesia. Secondly, we, the sons and daughters of Indonesia, vow to recognize one nation, the nation of Indonesia. Thirdly, we, the sons and daughters of Indonesia, vow to uphold the language of unity, Indonesian.”

The patriotic words written in the Youth Pledge were uttered with utmost confidence by the Natuna children. Stirring emotions for those who hear them.

Indeed, the islands in Natuna District function as a fence of the Indonesian archipelago which serve as the gateway to the country.

The waters of Natuna Islands are portrayed as a vast expanse of Indonesia’s yard. The huge quantities of oil and gas reserves, wealth of fish, coral reefs, and other natural resources that the land and sea of Natuna have look like the exquisite plants that beautify the yard.

Like a palace, the waters of Natuna are beautiful courtyards filled with expensive plants. And the young people on the islands are security forces who are at the forefront of the enemy who wants to come to destroy and steal.

Therefore, the youth of Natuna must be tough and have a high sense of nationalism.

Spirit of unity

Fostering the spirit of nationalism in Natuna is not difficult. Parents have passed that sense of nationalism onto their children from an early age.

In fact, the feelings of love to Indonesia among local youth have grown deeper in recent years thanks to the ever-growing attention the central government pays to Natuna, according to Natuna Genre Ambassador Fikri Katriansah.

Truly, President Joko Widodo sets his gaze and affection for Natuna. He makes repeated visits to the district, and has even launched various programs to improve the welfare of coastal residents.

The central and regional governments are eager to make Natuna flourish.

Most recently, the government set Natuna as a digital-based island, or Natuna Digital Island. Of course, it becomes the pride and joy of its people.

Various development efforts pursued by the government also strengthen the motivation of Natuna’s young people to empower themselves in order to be more better and more capable to compete with their counterparts from other Indonesian regions.

Fikri, for example. The twelfth grader from High School I Bunguran Timur is very confident that he can win the competition and achieve his dream of pursuing higher education at the University of Riau and obtain a PhD degree.

“Natuna may be the outermost island, seemingly not so up to date, but it does not rule out the possibility that we can be better. We have the motivation to compete further,” he said.

Fikri’s words sound way wiser than his actual age. There is no hint of inferiority as someone who does not come from a metropolitan city. There is only pride of being a Natuna resident who can do anything and is ready to defend the country.

He thinks that every region in Indonesia is unique, therefore each of the youth also has different set of abilities. Collaboration from all of them actually makes Indonesia stronger.

“We have the same opportunities. Nothing prevents us from competing in big cities, such as the cities in Java and other areas of Sumatra,” he affirmed.

Essentially, all citizens do have the same opportunities to progress and develop the country, including those in Natuna.

The central and regional governments provide plenty of opportunities for outstanding children of the Motherland to improve themselves.

Head of Natuna District Wan Siswandi also encouraged all members of young generation in the region to possess good qualities, gather strength together, be enthusiastic, keep moving onwards, and develop their potential to become the best generation in the present and in the future.

During the recent Youth Pledge celebration in Ranai, he appealed to the youth to respond wisely to differences in order to strengthen the unity and integrity of Indonesia.

Governor Ansar Ahmad also motivated the young people of Natuna not to be afraid of competing with their peers from other regions.

Children living on the islands have no reason to be inferior because an evidence of life reveals that they have the abilities that may not be owned by those in big cities.

In terms of intelligence, Natuna’s children are obviously so competitive as they consume the best intake of nutritious fresh fish to amp up their intelligence.

What needs to be done is how to keep developing the quality of every person in Natuna. “Thus, please never feel inferior (just) because we live in islands. We are proving that in the future, there will be more young people from Riau islands who are able to contribute to the nation at national level,” Ahmad remarked.

Guardians of the border

In the end, life goes on, and the young people are the ones who will carry the legacy on.  The youth of today will be the leaders of tomorrow. What they do will determine the destiny, fate of the nation and state in the future.

As the governor had said, youth is an important driving force for developing the nation’s power to enable the 2045 Golden Indonesia vision to come true. Members of Indonesia’s young generation are also the reason for the nation’s eternal glory.

By having brilliant, enthusiastic, and patriotic young people in Natuna District, there is no need to worry in trusting them to guard the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia’s sovereignty.

They do not merely secure and safeguard the country’s land and sea border in the forefront but they also keep striving to make Natuna more advanced and prosperous.
