Huawei, BRIN Sign Memorandum of Understanding for AI Research and Innovation to Strengthen Digital Ecosystem

Huawei, the global leading provider of ICT solutions, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), related to the development of research and innovation in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, 5G technology and the Indonesian digital ecosystem. This MoU is an effort to encourage collaboration in strengthening the research and innovation ecosystem, in order to create a digital-based, environmentally friendly economy and utilize natural resources.

The objective of the MoU is to synergize the resources and competencies of both Huawei and BRIN in contributing to the growth of the digital industry and the development of cloud systems in Indonesia. The MoU was signed at the Indonesia Research and Innovation (InaRI) Expo 2022 at Cibinong Science Center, Bogor Regency, West Java. Present as witnesses at the signing ceremony were Laksana Tri Handoko, Head of BRIN, and Jason Zhang, CEO of Huawei Cloud Indonesia. The MoU was signed by Budi Prawara, Head of the BRIN Electronics and Informatics Research Organization (OREI) and Yenty Joman, Director of Government Affairs, Huawei Indonesia, representing BRIN and Huawei respectively.

Laksana Tri Handoko, Head of BRIN affirmed that BRIN encourages collaboration with various parties in strengthening research and innovation ecosystems, in order to embody a digital-based economy that is environmentally friendly, and utilizes natural resources (SDA).

“The MoU initiated by BRIN and Huawei Indonesia was held at the InaRI Expo 2022, which is intended to be a showcase for the advancement of research and technological innovation in Indonesia. It is hoped that this synergy can be a catalyst that is able to promote and initiate BRIN’s cooperation with various parties, both nationally and internationally. Through InaRI Expo 2022, BRIN also invites all researchers and innovators from various institutions to share successes that inspire the next generation of researchers and innovators,” said Laksana Tri Handoko.

Meanwhile, Jason Zhang, CEO of Huawei Cloud Indonesia stated, ”In the future, the success of the digital economy will depend on at least three main factors, which are a strong digital infrastructure, qualified digital talents and a mature digital ecosystem.”

“By 2025, more than 85 percent of organizations will adopt a cloud-first strategy. Because of this, Huawei Cloud has recently launched a local data center in Jakarta and we will continue to invest more than USD 300 million over the next 5 years to strengthen our cloud line. In addition, to support the strengthening of Indonesia’s digital talent, through the Huawei ASEAN Academy platform, Huawei has now trained more than 68 thousand professionals within two years as part of its commitment to develop 100 thousand digital talents within 5 years. Everything is based on the belief that we need to synergize for a wider collaboration that involves the entire ecosystem in achieving success together,” said Jason Zhang.

So far, BRIN has collaborated with various stakeholders in technology development and innovation. Collaboration with Huawei has been carried out since 2020 for the development of artificial intelligence in order to support the acceleration of digital transformation. This is in line with the development of the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence. BRIN itself has implemented an e-scientific service platform, which is a digital business process in the form of integration of thousands of research tools that can be accessed not only by BRIN researchers, but also external parties. Thus, management can manage maintenance planning and the provision of other supporting equipment.

Carrying “Digital, Blue, and Green Economy: Research and Innovation for Food and Energy Sovereignty”, the InaRI Expo 2022 is also intended to create a space for expression and appreciation for researchers, innovators, and inventors who have contributed to society and the country. Around 240 participants took part in the event.
