East Java, Sweden explore cooperation in public transportation

The East Java provincial government and the Swedish government are exploring cooperation in the development of electricity-based public transportation, especially buses, in East Java.

“Based on the discussion earlier, the Swedish government and the private sector from that country will invest here,” East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa said after receiving a visit from the Swedish Ambassador to Indonesia, Marina Berg, at the Grahadi State Building, here on Thursday.

During the meeting, Berg expressed an interest in cooperating in the public transportation sector in Surabaya and East Java, including supporting the development of electricity-based public transportation, such as buses and other vehicles, in the province.

The exploration of cooperation is expected to become a part of the green transition program for realizing environmentally friendly transportation.

“Hopefully, this can be a part of the strengthening (of the program) because in 2060, together, we will strive to achieve zero percent emissions,” the governor remarked.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Berg said that more than one hundred companies from Sweden are operating in Indonesia.

“We are ready to strengthen this collaboration with significant and sustainable collaborations in Surabaya and East Java, especially in terms of the development of electricity-based public transportation,” she said.

Berg expressed the hope that the cooperation will provide a strong foothold for the two countries and agencies, including their human resources.

She informed that currently, Swedish delegates have reached the implementation discussion stage on the technical implementation of transportation, especially for electricity-based buses and other vehicles.

The Swedish Ambassador further said that the meeting will be followed-up by the private sector with support from the government of Sweden, which is expected to lead to a signing of a cooperation agreement.

Govt to completely renovate Kanjuruhan Stadium

The Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Ministry has decided to completely renovate Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang District, East Java Province, to improve the safety of spectators visiting the stadium.

PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said here on Thursday that the decision was reached after his ministry conducted an audit of the stadium.

“We have to redesign (the stadium) for a total revitalization, thus it can be used again and there will be no incident (in the future). In its current condition, it (the stadium) is inadequate. Hence, if it is not renovated, it will not be allowed to be used,” he explained.

He informed that the funds for the renovation would be sourced from the state budget (APBN). However, the amount that will be spent on the revitalization has not been determined.

The minister further said that in the near future, his team will still redesign the stadium. Later, all areas of the grandstand will be equipped with roofs — like at Manahan Stadium in Solo city, Central Java province.

“Hopefully, the (new) design will be completed in three to four months, then we can start (the total renovation). We will begin it in 2023, since it (the revitalization) has been ordered by President Joko Widodo,” he informed.

The renovation of the stadium is expected to take about one year, Hadimuljono said. In addition to completely revitalizing the sporting facility, the PUPR Ministry will also establish a memorial of the Kanjuruhan tragedy.

“It will be completed in one year. The aim of the renovation is so that (this stadium) can be used again. Later, we will build a monument to remember the victims,” the minister added.

A number of findings were made during the evaluation of the stadium, which made it necessary to carry out a total renovation of the facility.

The findings include the absence of stairs in the economy class spectator tribune, inadequate door installations, as well as the absence of emergency exits.

Other findings comprise inadequate lighting, insufficient restroom facilities for spectators, an inadequate spectator perimeter buffer zone, as well as guardrails, which supporters can easily jump over.

Kanjuruhan tragedy: Victim count reaches 754

The total number of victims in the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy in Malang District, East Java, on October 1 has reached 754, including casualties and the injured, according to the Malang District Health Office.

“The last data is 132 deaths, 596 victims with minor and moderate injuries, and 26 victims with major injuries; the total tally is 754 people,” Head of the office Wijanto Wijoyo confirmed here on Thursday.

He said that the number of victims with minor and moderate injuries fluctuated due to some victims continuing to seek medical treatment at hospitals in Malang weeks after the disaster.

Some victims complained that their pain did not recede, hence they decided to return to hospitals, he explained.

“Some victims returned home, yet in a week or less, they returned to the hospital,” Wijoyo noted.

As per the health office’s records, 12 victims are currently receiving medical care at hospitals in Malang, he said, adding that nine of the victims are being treated at Saiful Anwar Regional General Hospital in Malang city.

“The remaining three treated at Kanjuruhan Regional General Hospital, and one of them already has their ventilator withdrawn,” Wijoyo informed.

Meanwhile, head of the medical and health division of the East Java Police, Senior Commissioner Erwinn Zainul Hakim, disclosed that the families of two victims who died in the Kanjuruhan tragedy have requested an autopsy of the victims.

“We have been informed that two families allowed the autopsy to take place,” he said.

The autopsy will take place next week at the respective victim’s burial ground, Hakim said, adding that the process would be handled by doctors from the Indonesian Association of Forensic Medicine (PDFI).

“Doctors appointed by PDFI will handle the process, which will involve the exhumation and examination of the bodies at their burial place,” he informed.

Wage subsidy disbursal to start through Pos Indonesia next week

Wage subsidy assistance (BSU) for workers who do not have an account with state-owned banks (Himbara banks) will be disbursed through state-owned PT Pos Indonesia next week, Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah has said.

“The BSU has been received by 8,432,533 workers across Indonesia through Himbara banks. Meanwhile, for workers who do not have a Himbara bank account, it will be disbursed through Pos Indonesia starting from next week,” she informed in a statement released on Thursday.

With 8,432,533 workers receiving the aid, the disbursement has reached 65.66 percent of the 14.6 million targeted beneficiaries, she said.

Fauziyah further noted that until the phase 5 disbursement, BSU has been provided to workers with Himbara bank accounts. Meanwhile, there are those who are eligible for the assistance but have not received the aid because they do not have an account with Himbara banks.

While assisting President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) during the review of BSU disbursement to workers in Bandung, West Java, on Thursday, the minister conveyed that her ministry is cooperating with PT Pos Indonesia to accelerate the disbursement this year.

“It is being done so that workers who do not have an account with Himbara banks do not need to open an account because it (the aid) will be disbursed through PT Pos Indonesia,” she said.

She assured that the disbursement, whether through Himbara banks or PT Pos Indonesia, will not burden the beneficiaries.

The government is providing wage subsidy assistance to help eligible workers maintain their purchasing power amid an increase in the prices of goods due to a rise in fuel prices.

Under the program, Rp600 thousand is being provided to the targeted beneficiaries.

The targeted beneficiaries are workers who meet several requirements: they are Indonesian nationals, active participants in the Workers Social Security Agency’s (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan’s) program as of July 2022, earn a maximum of Rp3.5 million per month, and are not state civil apparatus (ASN) or members of the Indonesian Military (TNI) or National Police (Polri).

4th 2022 G20 FMCBG discusses mitigation on stagflation: BI

Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) Perry Warjiyo reported that the 4th 2022 G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) Meeting will discuss the handling of stagflation potentials that threatened various countries’ economic growth.

“We will jointly address the global (issues) by coordinating (with) the G20 (members) to mitigate the risk of stagflation,” he stated when met ahead of the meeting here on Wednesday evening local time.

The FMCBG is organized by Indonesia’s 2022 G20 Presidency under the Finance Track to discuss various global economic and finance issues.

The BI governor stated that the harmonization of macroeconomics and monetary policies will continue to be discussed at the meeting to prevent the rising commodities prices and inflation rate to worsen the current economic downturn.

Furthermore, the FMCBG meeting would discuss about mitigating the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak on various sectors as well as cooperation on cross-border payments and central bank digital currency (CBDC).

Warjiyo remarked that other agenda of the meeting included financial inclusion, green financing, and international taxation that had become the main discussions during the earlier three 2022 G20 FMCBG meetings.

Furthermore, he ensured that Indonesia’s 2022 G20 Presidency will continue to echo the importance of cooperation and mutual understanding in the midst of various global turmoil that could disrupt the world’s economic growth.

“Sense of togetherness in the G20 forum is important (to be maintained), as currently, the management of global macroeconomic policies is showing a lot of progress, especially for financial risk mitigation,” he added.

The 4th FMCBG is being held on October 12-13, 2022, in Washington D.C., the U.S.

Earlier, the first 2022 G20 FMCBG took place in February 2022 in Jakarta; the second meeting was held in April 2022 in Washington D.C.; while the third one was organized in July 2022 in Nusa Dua, Bali Province.

Indonesia must play role of persuader at G20: Yudhoyono

Indonesia must play the role of a persuader for global leaders during the G20 forum to push for world peace, Indonesia’s sixth president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, has said.

“Indonesia has a huge possibility to play the role of a smart and honest persuader. This is our political tradition since the past,” he stated during a discussion hosted by the Yudhoyono Institute here on Thursday.

During the discussion, the former president expressed the hope that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and his government would utilize the opportunity provided by Indonesia’s G20 presidency to persuade global leaders to be a part of solutions to create a safer world in the future.

G20 could become a medium to address global issues, he said.

“We need high-mindedness and willingness to hold personal egos among the conflicting world leaders while facing each other,” Yudhoyono added.

He urged global leaders to work together to address global issues instead of holding on to their egos and considering only their own interests as such thoughts will produce nothing.

Negotiations remain a relevant option for addressing global issues, the former president highlighted.

“Specifically, I believe that the global community will be thankful when a substantive bilateral meeting can be organized during the G20 Summit in Bali,” he said.

The substantive bilateral meeting must start with good intentions between US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin, he added.

“It would be better if another bilateral meeting between President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping could take place. What is it for? It is to calm Europe and East Asia,” Yudhoyono said.

The former president added that though the G20 forum cannot resolve all global issues, success in persuading global leaders to meet and discuss issues at the forum would be a good start, and might change the course of history.

Culture Ministry highlights importance of batik preservation

The Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture stresses the significance of the efforts to preserve batik, the Indonesian traditional fabric, as a cultural inheritance and national wealth.

“Batik is a description of Indonesia’s journey and history, which is why it needs to be preserved,” the ministry’s official, Femmy Eka Kartika Putri, noted at a virtual interview with Antara, Thursday.

The ministry urged all citizens, especially women, to play an active role in the efforts to preserve batik in the country.

“Preserving batik is the obligation of the people, and especially Indonesian women, since most of the batik creators are women that had become a source of creativity and innovation,” she explained.

Development of the batik industry in Indonesia is currently growing rapidly as time passes and technology develops. Concurrently, women play a strategic role in developing and preserving batik, she added.

The ministry continues to strengthen cross-sectoral coordination in the efforts to preserve batik in Indonesia as well as an effort to empower women.

“The ministry, along with all related ministries and institutions, continues to undertake several empowerment programs to create quality and competitive women human resources,” she remarked.

Meanwhile, in addition to batik, the ministry encourages the preservation of kebaya as a symbol of the nation’s identity and culture, Putri stated.

“The ministry continues to encourage the preservation of kebaya clothing as Indonesia’s identity to cultivate nationalism among the people, specifically Indonesian women,” she explained.

Indonesians need to understand that kebaya is a cultural inheritance that should be preserved by wearing them on all opportunities.

“Wearing a kebaya will exude a sense of aura and beauty of Indonesian women as reflected from their behavior and attitude as civilized Indonesian women with high culture,” she remarked.
