Vice President optimistic MSMEs will help develop national economy

Vice President Ma’ruf Amin has said he believes that micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) will play a crucial role in national economic development by contributing to the gross domestic product (GDP) and absorbing the workforce.

“MSMEs are able to absorb 97 percent of the total workforce and raise 60.4 percent of the total investment value,” he said at the online commemoration of the 2021 National MSMEs Day on Thursday.

According to data from the Cooperatives and MSMEs Ministry, the contribution of small businesses to the GDP stands at 61.07 percent, he noted.

Therefore, the Vice President said he hoped that MSMEs would help drive economic recovery and succeed in boosting national economic growth to support the achievement of fair and equitable social welfare.

He also lauded the sustainability of the sector in the current difficult situation. “Amid the pandemic that has lasted almost 1.5 years, MSMEs have been increasingly integrated with other national economy sectors. Hence, we will keep empowering them,” he said.

Meanwhile, Cooperatives and MSMEs Minister Teten Masduki noted that the pandemic is still posing challenges to business activities, although the economic growth rate has improved in the second quarter of 2021.

“We have experienced a positive economic growth in the second quarter of 2021, which reached 7.07 percent year on year. However, the enforcement of community activities restrictions has still hampered our business activities,” he said.

Masduki also said he hoped that the commemoration could serve as an opportunity to push MSME transformation attempts for the future.

“We have to encourage the rise of Indonesian MSMEs to dominate and elevate our national economy while keep adapting amid the pandemic disruption,” he remarked.

Digital technology boosts Indonesia’s economic growth by 1%: CSIS

Increased adoption of digital technology applications in Indonesia has boosted the national economic growth by one percent, Centre of Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Indonesia’s head of economy Yose Rizal Damuri has said.

“So, for the next 10-20 years, we really need a bigger digital technology application,” Damuri remarked at an online discussion here on Thursday.

In addition, a CSIS study has indicated that districts and cities with the highest Internet penetration in Indonesia, 50 percent for instance, have recorded a higher economic growth of 0.4 percent compared to regions without Internet penetration, he pointed out.

“So, there is a significant correlation between the Internet and economic growth,” Damuri said.

To this end, an increase in digital technology application access is required in the future to boost the economy, he added.

Internet usage has skyrocketed in Indonesia ever since COVID-19 struck, he said. This has been confirmed by a report by Statistics Indonesia (BPS) that has indicated a 9-percent increase in Internet usage in Indonesia within a year of the pandemic, he pointed out.

However, an increase in digital technology application cannot happen without strong and adequate digital infrastructure, Damuri emphasized.

Without quality infrastructure, Indonesia will experience numerous problems in developing digital technology and its applications, whether in economy, governance, or other social sectors, he explained.

According to the Communication and Informatics Ministry, Indonesia’s post sector’s revenue climbed 30 percent year-on-year in the first semester of 2019 due to the utilization of digital technology.

“I think we all agree that digital transformation has accelerated the global postal supply chain and boosted customer satisfaction, experience, and trust towards global postal services,” post and informatics director general at the Communication and Informatics Ministry, Ismail, noted in a press statement released here on Thursday.

Indonesia’s waste management reaches 55.96 percent: minister

Waste management in Indonesia has reached 55.96 percent and encouraged effective work to achieve the target of 100 percent waste management by 2025, Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar said. “Based on data of Environment and Forestry Ministry, our waste management reached 55.96 percent of the target of 100 percent of waste being managed till 2025,” Nurbaya said when opening the National Coordination Meeting (Rakornas) of the Waste Bank monitored from Jakarta, Thursday.

The details of the achievements so far are the reduction of waste in all districts/cities reaching 13.49 percent of the 30 percent target and the handling efforts of 42.47 percent of the 70 percent target till 2025.

The target has been set in the Presidential Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia Number 97 of 2017 concerning National Policies and Strategies for the Management of Household Waste and Types of Household Waste.

“We have to really work effectively in a short time until 2025,” Siti said.

Currently, there is a built paradigm related to waste management, which is to become a source of economic raw materials, Siti explained. It is part of green growth where achieving economic growth is done by using resources and energy efficiently and reducing the impact on the environment.

The principle as a new renewable resource, part of a circular economy and green growth, has already begun to be applied in Indonesia, according to Siti. One of which is through waste banks.

Waste banks encourage efforts to reduce waste at the source and change the perspective of waste into something of economic value.

Green growth was then continuously encouraged by the issuance of a regulation by the Minister of Environment and Forestry Number 14 of 2021 concerning Waste Management at Waste Banks on July 1, 2021.

“It is hoped that the movement and steps of the waste bank are supported at all levels of government, local government and the community, especially in the world of education and business in waste management to be more optimal,” she said in conclusion.

Mass media must adapt quickly to changing technology: Kominfo

Minister of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) Johnny G. Plate, has asked the mass media to continue fighting in the digital era by adapting dynamically to technological changes.

“Media is a pillar of democracy, opening public’s window of information,” he remarked during a webinar on journalism here on Thursday.

He said that the media and society are currently facing two challenges. One is the disruption of technology due to the presence of social media and the second is the coronavirus pandemic, which has changed almost all aspects of life, he explained.

Indonesia is also entering the era of the 5G internet network, which offers high-speed internet services, he said. Change is certainly unavoidable, so the media must be able to adapt and be agile in responding to these changes, he added.

Therefore, Plate appealed to media industry players to reformulate the vision of the media ecosystem.

He said the qualifications of human resources must be taken into account by measuring their readiness to carry out jobs and digital skills, since the digital era has given rise to many new ways of working.

Meanwhile, director general of postal and information technology equipment resources, who is also the acting director general of post and information technology administration, Ismail, said that the coronavirus pandemic has forced the public, including the media, to adopt digital technology. Digital transformation promises efficiency, supports the development of new products and services, presents new business models, and removes boundaries between industries, he pointed out.

In the context of mass media, conventional media certainly needs to be transformed, for example by opening subscriptions to digital newspapers, he said.

Digital transformation offers digital media monetization opportunities and income from advertising, he noted. In taking advantage of them, the media will face the challenge of how to increase public’s willingness to pay a subscription fee in order to get good quality information, he said.

In the midst of global trends, digital media players can generate a good income if they have good information and have segments, he added. Hence, journalists need to improve their abilities, he said.

In addition, the media also faces the challenge of reading literacy which is still low, so the media must make news headlines that attract attention, otherwise known as clickbait, he remarked.

“Let’s encourage people to consume news properly and correctly,” Ismail remarked.

Pancasila-based leadership necessary for Indonesia: scholar

Jakarta (ANTARA) – A national leadership based on Pancasila ideology is necessary to implement good governance in Indonesia, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta’s Professor Azyumardi Azra has emphasised.

“Pancasila-based leadership is necessary, particularly in public offices of the executive, legislative, and judiciary government branches,” Professor Azra stated during the virtual seminar on Pancasila governance observed here on Wednesday.

Pancasila-based leadership stemmed from the five tenets of Pancasila, and national leaders should implement its values in their leadership and during the decision-making process instead of only memorizing and comprehending its theory, the Muslim scholar explained.

Pancasila is essential to develop good governance within Indonesia’s democracy as an effort to fulfill the reform’s mandate, implemented by eradication of corruption and proper electoral policies in the country, he added.

The rampant corruption and the recent issue within the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) caused suboptimal corruption eradication efforts and public protest, he stated.

Money politics and transactional politics need to be tackled in the electoral process to assure good governance in Indonesia, he also pointed out.

Besides Pancasila’s implementation in public offices, he also urged non-governmental entities such as public organisations, educational institutions, and other organisations with firm leadership to implement Pancasila tenets on its leadership and daily activities.

Azra also noted the necessity to develop a political system that combines universal principles of democracy with the relevant national values to avoid the impression that democracy has a foreign origin.

“We need to combine democracy and national values to ensure that our people would not see democracy as a foreign, western idea,” he stated.

Tourism Ministry, BNPT develop anti-radicalization program

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry and the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) have jointly developed an anti-radicalization program, which will focus on the development of tourism and creative economy to curb radicalism.

“There are several areas that the BNPT has chosen to become the Nusantara Integrated Special Area (KKTN) as a soft approach for preventing the development of radicalism and terrorism,” Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, said in a press statement issued on Wednesday.

There are a number of areas with potential in the tourism and creative economy sectors such as Bima in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and Malang in East Java, he informed.

Several programs at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy could be synergized with programs from the BNPT, he added.

They include the development of tourist villages and creative hubs as well as assistance and training related to skills development in the tourism and creative economy sector, he said.

For example, Bima has Maria tourist village in Wawo District, which can be developed for its potential, Uno said. Also, training and technical guidance from the ministry can be synergized with the BNPT anti-radicalization program, he added.

Bima is under the coordinating area of the Labuan Bajo Flores Tourism Agency (BPOLBF) of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy because two of its sub-districts are included in the Komodo Biosphere Reserve Area, he explained.

Meanwhile, Head of the BNPT Commissioner-General Boy Rafli Amar said that Bima is one of the priority areas for the implementation of the anti-radicalization program.

“This KKTN is a means of the soft approach based on welfare development as our effort in the context of de-radicalization. This year, we are preparing two KKTN areas, namely East Java and NTB,” he informed.

Furthermore, he stated that activities based on three pillars — economic, education, and tourism — will be carried out at the KKTN locations.
