Huge potential for fruit and vegetable exports

Hanoi: With robust export of fruits and vegetables, the industry has set a typical example for quick transformation in the context of economic difficulties to tap the potential and expand global reach.

Statistics of the Import-Export Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade showed that fruit and vegetable exports totalled 510 million USD in January, representing a rise of 24.9% over December and 112.1% against the same month last year.

Looking back at 2023, many fruits saw impressive growth in export, such as durian by 430.1% to 2.2 billion USD. The export revenue of dragon fruits reached 523 million USD, banana 242 million USD, jackfruit 168 million USD and mango 154 million USD.

Bright prospects are fuelled by the huge demand of the Chinese market, with Vietnam negotiating for official export of more types of fruits coupled with efforts to promote exports to other markets such as the US, the EU, Australia and the Republic of Korea, according to the department.

The department forecast the expo
rt of fruits and vegetables will reach 6.5 billion USD this year, after setting a record of nearly 5.6 billion USD in 2023.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan said that the thinking needs to be changed to keep up with the market-based mechanism.

‘Vietnam is open, our market is the whole world and we are also a part of the global market. There is no certain data on how much the world consumes each year. Thus, the thinking must be changed,’ he said.

The competition is growing fiercer, he said, adding that the planning for the agricultural sector also needs to be renovated. ‘The planning must be more market-based. We must have a framework to guide production following market signals.’

He also said that the industry should take advantage of trade agreements to expand global reach, besides domestic consumption.

Huge potential

There is huge potential for the fruit and vegetable industry to expand export which has just accounted for 2-3 % of the global fruit and vegetable export revenue
.

General Secretary of the Vietnam Vegetable and Fruit Association Dang Phuc Nguyen was optimistic, forecasting that the fruit and vegetable exports would expand at 15-20% in 2024 to set a new record high with the value to exceed 6 billion USD or even hit 7 billion USD.

The fruit export is growing at a good pace, but greater effort is needed to open markets for more types of fruits.

The market share of Vietnam in the global fruit and vegetable market remained modest.

For example, the EU is the largest fruit and vegetable import market in the world with an annual value of up to 150 billion USD, but Vietnam’s export accounted for just 0.18%.

Nguyen said the EU is the third largest importer of Vietnam’s fruits and vegetables, a potential market where Vietnam could take advantage of the EU- Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) to boost exports.

It is important that Vietnam enhance product quality to meet global standards such as GlobalGap in order to expand to highly demanding markets like the EU.

Nguyen H
ong Lam, Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Circular Agriculture, said Vietnam needs to develop value chains for agricultural products to improve quality and stabilise prices./.

Victories by Tran Quyet Chien at the Three-Cushion Carom Billiards World Cup in Portugal and Bao Phuong Vinh at the World Three-Cushion Championship in Turkey last year have significantly increased interest in the sport.

One highly anticipated event is the National Cup Carom Billiards Championship – VBSF 2024, scheduled to take place from April 13 to 21 in Da Nang city.

Starting this year, this tournament will be held annually to identify emerging talents and select exceptional players nationwide. The competition is an integral part of the official competition system and contributes to the national athlete ranking system. To promote widespread participation and development of the sport, the tournament will rotate among different provinces and cities across the country. It will feature categories such as men’s three-cushion carom, men’s one-cushion carom, and women’s three-cushion carom.

Participat
ion in the National Cup Carom Billiards Championship – VBSF 2024 is open to Vietnamese citizens who are members of the Vietnam Billiards and Snooker Federation (VBSF), and they must be approved by the Department of Culture and Sports, as well as the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of provinces and cities.

The VBSF will use this tournament as a platform to select the top eight cueists in the three-cushion carom category who will then represent Vietnam at the 2024 Three-Cushion Carom Billiards World Cup in Ho Chi Minh City, scheduled for May 20 to 26.

Hosting the Three-Cushion Carom Billiards World Cup is a tremendous honour for the Vietnamese Billiards and Snooker Department and VBSF, as they have been granted the right to organise this world-class tournament for consecutive years by the World Billiards Federation (UMB).

This official UMB tournament is typically hosted by countries with a strong billiards following worldwide, such as Belgium, Portugal, France, and now Vietnam.

Hollywood Comp
any sponsors the event, which is expected to attract numerous fans who will witness top players from around the world competing for a total prize pool exceeding 108,000 USD.

In September, the 2024 World Three-Cushion Championship will take place at Sea Links City Resort in Phan Thiet city, Binh Thuan province. This championship holds special significance for Vietnamese cueist Vinh, who is the defending champion, and Chi?n, the previous year’s first runner-up. The world championship is the most prestigious tournament in the sport, featuring the participation of 64 players and a remarkable prize pool of nearly 216,000 USD.

Additionally, September will also witness a general meeting of the International Billiards and Snooker Federation (IBSF). Over 100 leaders from Billiards and Snooker Federations worldwide will convene in Binh Thuan to attend the meeting and, concurrently, enjoy the matches of the world championship./.

More conditions proposed for setting up satellite internet in Vietnam

Hanoi: The Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) has proposed that foreign businesses which want to provide domestic satellite telecommunications services must have a gateway station located in Vietnam.

The information is stated in a draft decree detailing articles and measures to implement the Law on Telecommunications 2023, which is being consulted by the MIC.

In the section on providing telecommunications services, the draft paper provides a number of provisions for cross-border services to Vietnamese users.

Under the draft decree, the supplier must have a commercial agreement with a licensed domestic telecommunications enterprise.

The domestic enterprise will then have to set up a technical plan to ensure information security, perform emergency prevention, and stop providing services at the request of competent state agencies.

In case of providing satellite telecommunications services, the supplier must have a plan in which all traffic generated by satellite subscriber terminals in the ter
ritory of Vietnam must pass through the ground gateway station located in Vietnam and connected to the public telecommunications network, according to the draft decree.

This is a new point compared to the decree guiding the Law on Telecommunications 2009.

In addition, the establishment of fixed satellite and mobile telecommunications networks must also meet capital and investment conditions, such as contributed charter capital must be at least 30 billion VND (1.2 million USD); and total investment capital in the network must be at least 100 billion VND (4.1 million USD) in the first three years.

During the process of developing the new Telecommunications Law, the MIC evaluated that satellite services with very large coverage areas can operate and provide services without either a technical or commercial presence in the host country, which means they are providing cross-border services.

In the context of satellite technology increasingly expanding, they pose a number of potential risks, such as data of use
rs in Vietnam going directly abroad and being collected and used illegally, the risks of data loss affecting the service users’ rights, and network and information insecurity.

Therefore, satellite information services development must ensure sustainable market growth and the users’ rights, protecting personal information, and ensuring information safety and security.

In Vietnam, the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) is the only unit that owns a satellite information network.

This form of connection uses VSAT (very small aperture terminal) with antenna diameters of 1.2-3m and the Vinasat broadband satellite information system to provide services. However, this method has low speed and high cost.

The current trend in the world is to transmit satellite internet using low earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations, like SpaceX is doing with Starlink.

Last year, some of this company’s devices were brought to test demonstrations at an event in Hanoi with transmission speeds of 150-200 Mbps.

The
solution is expected to help provide internet to remote areas that are difficult to reach with conventional cables.

The draft decree is open for comments until early April.

The new Law on Telecommunications will take effect from July 1./.
