UPDATE – Intesa Sanpaolo: fourth Energy Report presented at EU Parliament

BRUSSELS, Dec. 02, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The fourth ‘MED & Italian Energy Report’ was presented yesterday, December 1, at the European Parliament. This year’s report is entitled ‘Alternative fuels: a strategic option for the Euro-Mediterranean area?’ and is the result of a joint effort by SRM (a research centre linked to the Intesa Sanpaolo Group) and the ESL@Energy Center of the Politecnico di Torino, in collaboration with the Matching Energies Foundation. The event was sponsored by MEPs Tiziana Beghin, Patrizia Toia and Marco Zanni, and was organised with the help of Intesa Sanpaolo’s European Regulatory and Public Affairs Office based in Brussels. The report, in line with previous issues, aims to assess and understand the current energy situation and future prospects in the Mediterranean region, focusing this year on alternative fuels (both biofuels and synthetics), which fit well with a circular economy approach and could be instrumental in supporting decarbonisation, particularly in maritime transport. As a matter of fact, alternative fuels could play a significant role in accompanying the ‘green’ transition process and supporting a decrease in energy dependence, while also strengthening Euro-Mediterranean integration.

After introductory speeches by the three MEPs and the Head of European Regulatory and Public Affairs at Intesa Sanpaolo, Francesca Passamonti, the 2022 Report was presented by Massimo Deandreis, General Manager of SRM, and Ettore Bompard, Director of the ESL@ Energy Center, Politecnico di Torino. The report findings were discussed among the speakers: representatives of Italian and European institutions, international trade associations, the energy industry and energy-related infrastructures. The Chairman of Compagnia di San Paolo and ACRI, Francesco Profumo, gave the closing remarks.

Leonardo event in Brussels on the role of European Defence between innovation and sustainability

BRUSSELS, Belgium, Dec. 02, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The annual Leonardo’s appointment in Brussels is renewed, with the top management of the aerospace industry giant and of the European institutions gathered in the historic Solvay Library. The event, dedicated to the theme “The path towards European Defence between global challenges and technological sovereignty,” was attended by the CEO of Leonardo, Alessandro Profumo, the European Commissioner for Economy, Paolo Gentiloni, while the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, sent a video message. Among the guests were many personalities from the political, business, and diplomatic worlds. “Innovation and sustainability are two sides of the same coin. Innovating is essential to be sustainable over time, having sustainability as a fundamental element of one’s strategy to be successful and having the ability to attract the best people who allow us to always be innovative,” stated the CEO of Leonardo before the beginning of the event. “Every euro that is put into the defence sector generates 1.4 euros of economic benefits in other activities, what we call extended benefits. We generate almost 3.6 jobs between direct and induced jobs, we are an important reality for Europe,” he added. Among the speakers also Bastian Giegerich, Director of Defence and Military Analysis, at The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in London, took the floor. “European defence needs to be rooted in European defence industrial competence and a resilient supply chain to enable a degree of European sovereign capability,” he said. “Defence industry is a strategic asset for Europeans: a capable defence industrial base contributes to national security and prosperity in form of jobs and skills, and can be a breeding ground for innovation and technological progress.” The event concluded a day of appointments opened by the presentation of the report on ‘The economic impact of the European aerospace and defence industry,’ by the European Association of Aerospace, Security and Defence Industries (ASD), chaired by Mr. Profumo. “If the GDP contribution of the European Aerospace and defence industry was a country in its own right – the report has shown – it would position the sector at the median GDP level among EU countries, with a GDP larger than the economies of 14 countries within the reference region.”

Third COVID-19 dose coverage reaches 66.9 million

The number of Indonesian citizens who have received the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine or the first booster reached 66.9 million on Friday, according to the Task Force for COVID-19 Handling.

The number of people who have received the first booster increased by 76,530 on Friday to reach 66,938,549, or 28.5 percent of the 234,666,020 targeted recipients.

As per records, the second dose has been provided to 174,260,097 people, or 74.3 percent of the target population so far. On Friday, the number of residents who have received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine increased by 20,873.

Meanwhile, the coverage of the first dose reached 203,707,513, or 86.8 percent of the target.

The coverage of the fourth dose or the second booster, which is being provided to health workers, increased by 22,113 on Friday to reach 885,695.

The government has enacted a policy regarding the second booster vaccination for elderly citizens, or residents aged 60 years and above.

A professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, Rezeki Hadinegoro, stressed the importance of the second booster vaccination to increase the immunity of the elderly against COVID-19.

“The elderly group needs to immediately get a second booster vaccination, especially those who have co-morbidities,” he said, adding that the family plays an important role in enabling the second booster vaccination for the elderly.

The government is currently focusing on addressing the low coverage of the third dose or the first booster COVID-19 vaccination, the Health Ministry earlier informed.

“Of course, there is a plan to give the second booster to the general public but right now, we are focusing on expediting the (administration of the) first booster,” director general of disease prevention and control at the ministry, Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, said.

Responding to the plan for providing a second booster to the general public, Rondonuwu stated that all parties must first focus on increasing the coverage of the first booster, which, so far, has reached 38 percent as against the target of 50 percent.

However, the government has discussed the provision of the second booster to the general public after the second booster vaccination for the elderly group is completed, he added.

At present, the government is trying to expedite the administration of the first booster by mapping areas where vaccination coverage is still low and distributing vaccines with the help of the National Police and the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI), he informed.

“We are focusing on administering the first booster, while also managing the second booster provision for health workers and the elderly who are also immunocompromised,” he added.

Rondonuwu said that as part of efforts to increase the first booster coverage, the government has made the dose mandatory for travel.

The first and second boosters are equally important, especially for the elderly, he added.

VP provides 45 boats to fishermen in Biak, Papua

Vice President Ma’ruf Amin handed over 45 motor boats to fishermen in Biak Numfor district, Papua province, on Friday to improve the productivity and welfare of the local community.

“You (the fishermen) are all the backbone of the country. You work to get earnings not only for your family, but also for the state,” he remarked.

The Biak fishermen’s catch is not only used for domestic consumption, but also for exports, he noted.

“Some (of the catch) gets exported to America, while others to Japan. You all are heroes (of economic development) of Indonesia. Thank you for your dedication and hopefully, you will continue to earn (more) income,” the vice president stated.

He said he expected the motor boat assistance, which was provided using the Biak Numfor district government’s Special Allocation Fund (DAK) for the fishery sector, as well as the credit assistance from the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) Ministry to assist the fishermen in their work.

Amin also flagged off an export consignment of 1.4 tons of fresh tuna from Biak to Japan.

On the same occasion, director general of capture fisheries at the KKP Ministry, M. Zaini Hanafi, said that the boat assistance was expected to increase the fishermen’s income by four to five times per month.

He informed that only fresh tuna is exported to Japan, while frozen tuna is usually exported to the United States.

“The handling of the fresh fish must be very careful,” he added.

The director general noted that the tuna needs to arrive at the shore three to four days after being caught.

Fresh tuna is sent to Jakarta from Biak district before being exported to Japan, he said. Meanwhile, frozen tuna is sent to Ambon city in Maluku province first where it is processed into loins before being sent to Jakarta and exported to the US.

“Right now, we are preparing to build a bigger cold storage, God willing, it can be operated next year, thus the tuna can be processed into loins in Biak and exported directly to America,” he added.

60% of EVs globally to depend on Indonesia-made batteries: Widodo

As many as 60 percent of electric vehicles in the world will depend on the battery ecosystem that is being built in an integrated manner in Indonesia, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has said.

“I calculate how much; 60 percent of electric cars will depend on our EV (electric vehicle) battery; 60 percent of the market share in the world,” he noted at the “Kompas100 CEO Forum” at the State Palace in Jakarta on Friday.

According to the President, Indonesia has abundant resources, such as nickel, copper, bauxite, and tin, that are needed to create an electric vehicle battery ecosystem and they are available in large quantities.

According to Widodo, Indonesia only lacks lithium. However, it has expressed interest in cooperating with Australia for obtaining lithium supplies to support its EV battery ecosystem.

” I convey to PM Albanese (Australian PM Anthony Albanese) that Australia has lithium, we can buy it from Australia. But, some of us already have mines there. This is strategic, it is right to intervene like that,” he said.

Therefore, the resources to create the ecosystem are complete. Currently, one of the other important requirements is integrating the downstream process of these natural resources.

“Integrating this product is not easy, so that it becomes an ecosystem. This is what I keep doing, I desperately have to do this because this is what will jump us to another civilization,” Widodo said.

If the EV battery ecosystem is built in Indonesia, investment will also come in abundance, he added.

“(Investments) will come in abundance. Because in the future, electric motorcycles and electric cars will replace (conventional vehicles),” he explained.

Research and exploration of lithium need to be undertaken to support the development and production of batteries for domestic electric vehicles, a researcher from the National Research and Innovation Agency’s (BRIN’s) Metallurgical Research Center said earlier.

“The demand for lithium until 2030 and beyond will continue to rise. The question is whether Indonesia is capable of producing lithium,” researcher Latifa Hanum Lalasari observed during an online workshop on Indonesian lithium on Friday.

“This is what we need to explore and research together,” she said.

Globally, the consumption of lithium has continued to rise given that, in 2022, the development of electric vehicles has necessitated the production of batteries, and the main raw material for batteries is lithium, she added.

In view of this, research and exploration of lithium raw material sources have become important.

“If, for instance, we do not conduct research, then we will indirectly lag behind technologically,” she explained.

In nature, lithium is found in various concentrations in seawater, pegmatite, oil field brine, geothermal brine, and sedimentary rock (Li-rich clay).

Lithium raw material sources can be explored from primary resources, such as seawater and sea stone, and secondary resources, such as used batteries and mined materials.

One of the approaches for lithium extraction from primary resources that can be adopted in the future is extracting lithium from seawater or geothermal brine, Lalasari said.

Research and innovation must seek to resolve one of the national issues related to the provision of battery raw materials from local resources to support the development of national electric cars, she added.

To this end, the effort to explore and determine the availability of lithium and other mineral raw material sources in Indonesia necessitates collaboration between scientific branches and all parties, including universities.

Jakarta launches two-dose polio immunization program for infants

The Jakarta Health Office launched a two-dose polio immunization program for infants on December 1, 2022.

Under the program, the first injection will be given when the infants are four months old, while the second one will be administered when the infants are nine months old.

“Thus, polio immunization is not only given when the baby is four months old, but is given one more time at the age of nine months,” head of the surveillance, epidemiology, and immunization section of the Jakarta Health Office Ngabila Salama said here on Friday.

Jakarta has initiated the two-dose polio immunization program with Banten and West Java, she added.

The implementation of the two-dose polio immunization is in accordance with the Decree of the Director General of Disease Prevention and Control of the Ministry of Health Number HK.02.02/C/4834/2022 concerning technical guidelines for the implementation of the second dose inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV2) immunization program on October 5, 2022.

After Jakarta, Banten, and West Java, the Ministry of Health is scheduled to launch the program simultaneously across the country, starting early 2023.

Meanwhile, the drip polio immunization, or bivalent oral polio vaccine (bOPV), will be given four times at the age of one, two, three, and four months, she informed.

She explained that the bOPV provides protection against type one and type two polio. Meanwhile, the IPV, which is to be administered when a baby is four and nine months old, provides protection against type one, two, and three polio.

She expressed the hope that, through immunization, children can avoid getting infected with several infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis (TB), Hepatitis B, polio, measles, rubella, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, and pneumonia.

The Jakarta government is intensively carrying out immunizations through the National Child Immunization Month (BIAN) program for children aged 9 months to 59 months.

The vaccines provided under the BIAN program are the measles-rubella vaccine, polio vaccine (either in the form of injection or drops), and pentavalent vaccine.
