Astanaanyar suicide bomber likely did not work alone: BNPT

The National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) has said it suspects that the perpetrator of the suicide bombing at Astanaanyar Police Post, Bandung city, West Java, was not working alone.

The bombing at the police post was the act of a group, as was the case with the 2017 bomb attack on the Cicendo Village Office in Bandung city, deputy for enforcement and capability development at the BNPT, Ibnu Suhendra, said.

“Unlike the perpetrator who carried out the attack at the Criminal Investigation Agency (National Police Headquarters in 2021), whom the special detachment identified as a lone wolf,” he informed in Bandung city, West Java, on Thursday.

In 2017, the alleged perpetrator of the Astanaanyar bombing, Agus Sujatno, was involved as a pot bomb maker in Cicendo village. He was arrested and jailed for four years at Nusakambangan Prison and released in 2021.

Suhendra said he suspected that the attack at Astanaanyar was carried out by Sujatno with the help of an organized network since the attack was similar to one carried out by another terrorist group at the police station earlier.

“Motive-wise, this group wanted to attack the police, this perpetrator targeted our police officers who were having a morning assembly, with the aim that our members would fall victims,” he added.

National Police chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, had earlier informed that Sujatno aka Agus Muslim was still on the deradicalization program list.

“The person in question had been detained at Nusakambangan Prison. So that means, in quotation marks, the group is (still being monitored). The deradicalization process requires different techniques and tactics,” Prabowo said at a press conference in Bandung city on Wednesday.

Sujatno was difficult to talk to and had a tendency to avoid interactions, he added.

Indonesia ranks 46th globally in logistics performance: ministry

Logistics costs in Indonesia, which reached 23.5 percent of the national gross domestic product (GDP) in 2019, are relatively high, the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs has said.

Meanwhile, the nation’s logistics sector contributed 3.15 percent to the GDP in 2018, it added.

According to World Bank data on Logistics Performance Indicators (LPI), Indonesia placed 46th in logistics performance globally and 5th in the ASEAN region in 2018.

“This figure is indeed higher in comparison to other countries, such as Singapore, America only 8 percent, the European Union and Japan, South Korea only 9 percent,” assistant deputy for digital economy at the ministry, Edwin Manansang, said at a webinar, which was followed from here on Thursday.

The webinar discussed the logistics challenges and opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs)

According to Manansang, the country’s geographical conditions have compromised the logistics sector’s performance, keeping it from becoming optimal and posing problems for logistics operators.

Other problems pertaining to logistics have involved shipping to rural areas outside cities and outside Java, and fragmented warehousing problems and logistics actors, which have prevented effective and efficient business operations.

“About 70 percent of logistics business actors are small players and the warehouse process is still manual,” he noted.

Then, the utilization of trucks for transporting goods is not yet optimal, and there are still many MSMEs that rent trucks to send goods between cities using a one-time system only.

“So the time to return costs so that the cost is doubled,” he explained.

Then, information related to delivery, delivery time is still not standardized and not integrated, he noted.

He said that to resolve these logistical problems, the government has created the NLE (national logistics ecosystem) platform, which integrates data on the international flow of goods and documents from the time of arrival of the means of transport at a port till the goods arrive at a warehouse (hinterland).

The NLE platform, which is in line with Presidential Instruction Number 5 issued this year, aims to improve national logistics performance, the investment climate, and the competitiveness of the national economy.

Minister inspects production of arsenal at PT Pindad Malang

Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto inspected the production of the military armament system by state-owned weapons manufacturer PT Pindad in Malang, East Java, on Thursday.

“I checked the production of the military armament system in PT Pindad, which is good. We checked the quality, quantity, and ability,” Subianto informed.

The inspection was carried out to examine the production, quality, and number of defense products at PT Pindad, he said.

PT Pindad in Malang district produces ammunition, weapons, and other products to meet Indonesia’s defense needs, he added. He then called for supplying the need for the military armament system or the Main Equipment of Arsenal System (alutsista) in Indonesia domestically.

There is potential for PT Pindad to expand or increase its productivity to meet the country’s defense equipment needs, he said.

“There is a possibility to expand the production of arsenal equipment. PT Pindad produces a lot of ammunition and weapons, and everything we need should be made domestically,” he added.

PT Pindad president director Abraham Mose welcomed the minister’s visit to review the production facilities of small caliber ammunition (MKK) and large caliber ammunition (MKB).

The division of ammunition has a command center to monitor the 5.56 mm MKK production process in real-time, including several component machines.

The activity is a follow-up between PT Pindad and the Defense Ministry regarding the defense and security equipment contract which was signed at the Indo Defence 2022 event at JiExpo Kemayoran, Jakarta last November.

PT Pindad is aiming to become a prominent arsenal equipment manufacturer in Asia by carrying out innovation and entering into strategic partnerships to produce quality products.

PT Pindad produces weapons, ammunition, special vehicles, heavy equipment, industrial and service equipment, as well as transportation infrastructure, mining equipment, and cybersecurity infrastructure.

During his visit, Subianto also went to the Turen sub-district military command (Koramil) office in Malang. He also handed over essential food packages to 200 residents.

Subianto provides aid to people affected by Mount Semeru eruption

Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto disbursed assistance and reviewed the condition of communities affected by the Mount Semeru eruption at the Pronojiwo 2 Junior High School refugee camp, Lumajang district, East Java, on Thursday.

“I came to Lumajang district today to see the recent situation. I want to know about any difficulty (faced by the people staying at the refugee camp) which needs to be overcome,” he said, according to a press release issued here on Thursday.

The issues will be conveyed to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) later, thus there will be immediate follow-up and efforts taken to resolve the difficulties faced by the refugees, he added.

“We are grateful, as I have heard directly from the head of the (Lumajang) district (Thoriqul Haq) that everything has been able to be handled — I am impressed (with the local government’s efforts),” he remarked.

Furthermore, the minister met the elderly refugees and asked about their condition at the refugee camp.

He lauded the hard work of the local government, military, and police who have been agile in assisting the communities at the refugee camp.

Subianto also urged all parties to help each other and work together to mitigate the impact of the disaster.

“We all should work together. The strong ones help the weak. The lucky ones assist the less fortunate. That is Indonesia. Indonesians uphold mutual cooperation. Indonesians have always lived as one family, hence we help each other,” he remarked.

In addition, the minister also visited refugees at Supiturang 04 Public Elementary School.

Meanwhile, the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG) maintained Level 4 or caution alert issued for Mount Semeru.

Acting head of the Geological Agency of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, Muhammad Wafid, said that although its volcanic activity has started to decline, Mount Semeru still has the potential to spew hot clouds and eject lava, thus the alert level has been maintained.

Minister asks people to help maintain peace, security

Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto has appealed to the people, especially those living in Turen sub-district,  Malang district, East Java, to uphold peace and security.

To maintain harmony and security in society, there needs to be good collaboration between people, the national defense forces, the national police, village administrations, as well as the regional government, he said in Malang district on Thursday.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we must always get along and must work well with each other. Then, with the village leaders, national defense forces, national police, including the regional government,” the minister added.

The impact of the coronavirus pandemic is still visible, he said. However, the government has been able to handle it well, as seen by the decline in COVID-19 cases.

The war between Ukraine and Russia has also affected people in Indonesia, which has also compromised the community’s economy.

“Right now, the economy is in trouble all over the world due to the impact of COVID-19 and Ukraine’s war with Russia. They are producers of oil, gas, fertilizer, and corn. And because of the war, of course, their prices are going up,” he noted.

He said that even though the pandemic situation has currently improved, people must remain cautious. The government is also continuing to work to improve the public economy.

“We must still be harmonious, compact, work together, and must always be united; we must not be divided,” he said.

He also met with hundreds of residents in Turen sub-district, Malang district, on Thursday and took pictures with some of them.

He also provided basic food aid packages for at least 200 local residents and handed over 10 dirt bikes to the Turen Military District Command 0818/14.
