Indonesia to host cycling qualifiers for 2024 Paris Olympics

Indonesia will host the first round of the 2023 UCI Track Nations Cup, which will also serve as a qualifying championship for countries participating in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The UCI Track Nations Cup will be held at the Jakarta International Velodrome Rawamangun, East Jakarta, from February 23 to 26, 2023, and will feature keirin, individual sprint, team sprint, Madison, Omnium, and team pursuit events.

The executive board of the Indonesian Cycling Association (PB ISSI) held a coordination meeting with the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) and several ministries/agencies at the KOI Office in Jakarta on Friday to strengthen preparations for the competition.

“This is a world championship that is almost at the same level as F1 and the exposure is greater because it will be covered by 135 countries and attended by (athletes from) 50 countries. Approximately, 600 bicycle athletes will participate,” KOI’s executive committee Jadi Rajagukguk said in a press release received here on Friday.

The coordination meeting was also attended by a representative from the World Cycling Federation (UCI), Gilles Peruzzi, who came to ensure the readiness of the Jakarta International Velodrome ahead of the competition.

Peruzzi, who is also the UCI Head of Track, said that the UCI Track Nations Cup will be an important event for Indonesia since it will be the first event from which points will be counted and included in the qualifications for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“This is an important event for Indonesia because the points collected in this championship will be included as a qualifying point for countries participating in the Paris Olympics. This is the country’s first qualification out of six qualifying events for the Nation Cup. So, this is very important,” Peruzzi emphasized.

The 2023 UCI Track Nations Cup will comprise three series, which will take place in Jakarta in February, Cairo (Egypt) on March 14–17, and Milton (Canada) on April 20–23.

It will also be a qualifying event for the 2023 UCI Track World Championships in Scotland from August 3–9.

Thohir lists strengths that support nation’s economic growth

State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir has outlined four key strengths of Indonesia that will support its economic growth—natural resource downstreaming, food security, creative economy, and digital economy.

“Through downstreaming and industrialization, natural resources are not only distributed in the form of raw materials, but also processed into various derivative products,” he said in Jakarta on Friday.

Natural resource downstreaming could encourage Indonesia’s sustainable economic growth and help it become a part of the global supply chain, Thohir added.

Indonesia has the potential to develop nickel and bauxite derivative products, he said. Based on data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Indonesia controls 52 percent of the world’s nickel reserves.

Potential nickel derivative products that can be developed include steel products, batteries, aircraft turbines, and automobiles. Meanwhile, Indonesia has the sixth largest reserves of bauxite in the world at around 1.2 billion tons, which can be developed into materials, industrial equipment, sports equipment, and furniture, he added.

The minister made the remarks during a dialogue entitled “Indonesia Financial Summit, UI Digital Talk,” at the Purnomo Prawiro Multipurpose Hall of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia, Depok, West Java.

During the dialogue, Thohir also discussed the opportunities and challenges faced in developing the Indonesian economy, which has grown by five percent every year. He said that the momentum of economic growth is predicted to only last until 2045.

This is because by 2038, the pyramid of Indonesia’s population will start to turn upside down. Young people, who are currently under 35 years old, will pass their productive age in 2038.

According to him, Indonesia must have its own ecosystem or road map. Moreover, Indonesia’s middle-class population is projected to swell to 145 million and continue to grow. This shows that market opportunities are getting wider and the proper management of natural resources will boost the economy and create more jobs.

“In this knowledge-based economy era, which is an era when economic growth is based on the ability to innovate, the most important thing is not natural resources and markets, but human resources,” he stressed.

XBB, BQ.1 dominant COVID variants in Indonesia: Ministry

The XBB and BQ.1 sub-variants of Omicron are now the dominant COVID-19 variants in Indonesia, the Ministry of Health has said.

“If previously, BA.5 was the most dominant one in Indonesia, it has shifted,” spokesperson for the ministry Mohammad Syahril informed at a media briefing that was followed online on Friday.

According to him, the shift in the dominant variant of COVID-19 started from October 10, 2022, until the end of November.

The ministry data showed that currently, XBB and BQ.1 account for 90 percent of COVID-19 cases, and BA.5 the remaining 10 percent.

Syahril said that because the two variants have the potential to infect people faster, the community must stay alert, especially in welcoming the Christmas and New Year holidays.

He appealed to all parties to promptly complete their COVID-19 vaccinations to improve the level of antibodies against the virus. Based on the ministry’s records, in the period from October 4 to November 21, the number of patients with moderate, severe, and critical symptoms reached 17,442.

Of the number, 39 percent had not been vaccinated, 7 percent had only received the first dose, 25 percent had taken the second dose, and 29 percent had obtained the booster dose.

During the same period, the number of fatalities reached 2,449. Forty-eight percent of the people who died of COVID-19 had not been vaccinated at all, while 8 percent had received the first dose, 26 percent had taken the second dose, and 18 percent had obtained the booster dose.

He added that 40–50 percent of COVID-19 patients who died in hospitals were not fully vaccinated.

The first case of COVID-19 in Indonesia was confirmed in March 2020. According to data from the COVID-19 Handling Task Force, as of December 2, the nation has recorded 6,674,000 COVID-19 cases, 6,458,238 recoveries, and 159,921 deaths.

Govt to add cardiac cath labs at 14 hospitals in 2023

The Ministry of Health will add cardiac catheterization laboratories (cath labs) in 14 district and city hospitals in the country at the end of 2023.

“Currently, out of 267 district and city hospitals, there are still only a few that have cath labs: as many as 41 hospitals,” head of the Supporting Program for National Cardiovascular Referral Hospital, Hananto Andriantoro said at a press conference held at Dr. Johanes Leimena Ambon Hospital, which was followed online on Friday.

According to him, the government has prepared a Special Allocation Fund (DAK) for 2023 for the cath labs. Therefore, in 2024, the number of cath labs will rise from 41 to 55 units.

Andriantoro, who is also a cardiologist at Harapan Kita Heart Hospital, said that the price of one cath lab unit is around Rp18 billion.

He noted that there are several obstacles to efforts to meet the need for cath labs in all regions, which range from building requirements to human resources.

He pointed out that the majority of hospitals have not met the building requirements for setting up cath labs, such as those related to building dimensions, the distance between the cath lab and the emergency room, and the distance between the emergency room and the cardiovascular intensive care room.

“Many hospitals in Indonesia that we visited and observed, we also got information via Zoom, have not met the criteria for buildings,” he said.

He affirmed that his party will support the hospital facility management system to ensure the maintenance of the cath labs.

The cardiologist said that one other problem that hospitals are facing is unstable electricity supply. “We are working with regional governments so that hospitals that receive cath labs can have their own electricity substations,” he informed.

In addition, the availability of human resources who have attended training, namely six months for nurses and one year for cardiologists, needs to be ensured.

Ministry assures relocation land for Cianjur quake victims safe

The land selected for relocating the victims of the earthquake in Cianjur district, West Java, is in a safe zone and not on the fault line epicenter, the Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Ministry informed.

The land, which is located in Sirnagalih village, Cilaku sub-district, Cianjur district, will be used to relocate earthquake victims from several villages in Cugenang sub-district.

Director general for housing at the ministry Irwan Suprijanto said that the construction of houses on the 2.4-hectare land will be carried out by the Ministry of PUPR, which has prepared service providers to carry out the work.

“For the relocation land, it has been verified with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) regarding its safety. The relocation site is free from earthquake epicenter fault. The condition of the soil, rocks, and other elements in the Sirnagalih village relocation area is safe for housing construction,” Suprijanto informed in Cianjur district on Friday.

Moreover, he noted that the Cianjur district government has said that the relocation land lies in a residential zone, not a green zone, where the construction of buildings or housing is banned.

His party has also ensured the availability of water, electricity, access, and the possibility of building the housing units in the near future.

“The district head has issued a location determination decree; this is the basis for identifying the location plan that can accommodate 200 housing units and their facilities. We have prepared service providers to carry out rapid construction,” he informed.

Suprijanto said that the first stage of the housing construction, namely land measurement, was carried out two days ago, in accordance with the Government Goods/Services Procurement Policy Institute (LKPP) Head Regulation Number 13 of 2018 related to disaster mitigation, which stipulates that the appointed service provider must carry out the house construction work immediately.

The work will be continued following land clearing, which is expected to be completed on December 3, 2022.

Moreover, the earthquake-resistant housing components have also been prepared at the location with the help of the simple healthy instant house (RISHA) technology.

He informed that 25 units of RISHA have been prepared at the location and are ready to be established.

On November 21, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake rattled Cianjur district, West Java, at 1:21 p.m. local time. It was centered 10 kilometers (km) southwest of the district at a depth of 10 km. It did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.

According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), as of December 1, the number of people who have died in the quake has reached 329, while the number of injured has been recorded at 595. Of the injured, 59 people have been hospitalized with severe injuries. The disaster has also forced 114,683 people to flee their homes.

Sustainable development crucial to move forward amid challenges

It is important to continue with sustainable development amid the current global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Development Planning Ministry has said.

The global community will also face a food crisis, whose handling may reduce the allocation of funds for realizing the SDG target, head of the National Secretariat for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the ministry Vivi Yulaswati remarked at the 2022 SDGs Annual Conference here on Friday.

Hence, she emphasized the importance of collaboration among all parties, especially between government and non-government actors, for achieving the green economy targets to realize Indonesia’s 2045 Vision.

“Concrete action from all of you and the cooperation of all parties is urgently needed for the acceleration (of efforts to achieve the targets),” she said.

In particular, it is important to strengthen the regulatory framework on the green economy based on Presidential Decree Number 111 of 2022 regarding achieving the SDG targets, the official said.

It is also necessary to mainstream the regulatory framework in the Mid-Term National Development Program (RPJMN) and Long-Term National Development Program (RPJPN), she added.

Indonesia is not only targeting to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060, but also attain economic growth of 6.1–6.5 percent year on year by 2050 through the implementation of the green economy, which is estimated to create 1.8 million green jobs in 2030.

Low-carbon and climate-resilient development will be the backbone of Indonesia’s green economy transformation, she noted.

“We are not only pushing the SDG ideals, but also realizing them,” she added.

She also shared a report from the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific entitled “Asia and the Pacific SDG Progress Report 2022.”

At the conference, which was themed “Encouraging Green Economy Implementation to Achieve SDGs,” the National Development Planning Ministry, Regional Autonomy Monitoring Committee, as well as Association of District Governments in Indonesia also launched a Sustainable Regional Competitiveness Index.

The index aims to assess the progress and competitiveness of the implementation of sustainable development in regions.
