Riau Islands has moderate vulnerability in 2024 Election: Bawaslu

While it is categorized as moderate, this does not mean that it cannot rise or decline

Bintan, Kepulauan Riau The general election vulnerability index survey result shows that Riau Islands is categorized as moderately vulnerable during the 2024 General Election, Member of Riau Islands’ General Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) Indrawan stated here, Saturday.

This vulnerability potential is an early sign that can be used by the Riau Islands Bawaslu and other authorities to conduct various preventive efforts.

“While it is categorized as moderate, this does not mean that it cannot rise or decline. This certainly depends on the prevention effort that we take together,” he remarked.

According to Indrawan, at least three potential vulnerabilities can occur in Riau Islands throughout the 2024 General Election, with the first one relating to government officials’ neutrality.

Based on the earlier election experience, Riau Islands Bawaslu handled several cases related to the neutrality of state civil apparatuses (ASNs) and village apparatus.

“We monitor ASN, military, and police activities that have something to do with the election’s neutrality. We certainly coordinate with other authorities in conducting the prevention effort,” he stated.

The second vulnerability involves money politics. Riau Islands Bawaslu also handles several cases related to money politics in the previous election that are expected to not recur in the upcoming election.

“We expect all general election participants to not carry out money politics to garner support,” he remarked. The third vulnerability concerns the neutrality of the general election organizer. In the previous election, there have been cases related to biased election organizers.

“Temptation during the election is quite powerful. Therefore, the election organizer should remain committed in carrying out its duties professionally and with integrity,” he stated.

In addition to these three problems, Indrawan also revealed that the agency had formed a special team to monitor political activities on social media.

General election participants and their supporters are expected to respect each other to prevent conflict on social media.

“We also remind ASNs to restrain themselves, to not get involved or to become trapped in giving support both directly and through social media,” he noted.

Police chief issues apology over ‘deficiencies’ in public services

Jakarta National Police chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, on Saturday expressed his apologies for “deficiencies” in public services and issues plaguing the institution, which caused public trust in the police to plummet.

“We understand that there are deficiencies that we need to improve (in the institution). I, as the Police chief, wish to express my profound apology to the Indonesian people for our ill behavior, utterance, or performance while serving the public,” Prabowo said in his year-end statement at the Police Headquarters here on Saturday.

The police chief highlighted three cases that tainted the image of the police in the public eye this year—the murder of Brigadier Yosua Hutabarat at the hands of former high-ranking police officer Ferdy Sambo, the Kanjuruhan Stadium stampede, and drug cases involving high-ranking officers.

“Those cases dealt a heavy blow to our institution,” he said.

Prabowo affirmed that the police have taken the necessary measures to investigate the cases and brought all police officers involved to book.

Following the investigation into the murder of Brigadier Hutabarat, five suspects were charged with premeditated murder and six other police officers were charged with obstruction of justice, he informed.

The police also declared former West Sumatra Police head, Inspector General Teddy Minahasa, five police officers, and five civilians as suspects in drug crimes, the police chief noted.

“(Firm actions) demonstrated our commitment to zero-tolerance against drug cases. Hence, anyone involved, no matter their rank, will be charged. This is our commitment to eradicating drug-related and other cases,” Prabowo emphasized.

Meanwhile, the police also named three police officers and three other individuals as suspects in the October 2022 Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy, he said, adding that the case files of five of the suspects have been handed over to the prosecution.

In the year-end release, the police chief also informed that the 53-percent public confidence level in the agency in October 2022, according to survey agency Lembaga Survei Indonesia, has increased to 62.4 percent, as per a survey conducted by Charta Politika in December 2022.

Be vigilant against bad weather in flood-hit Central Java: Governor

We ask the public to remain vigilant because this condition is estimated by the BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency) to occur until January 3, 2023, so we must be on full alert every day.

Semarang, C Java Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo urged people on Saturday to stay alert to the potential of bad weather that is forecast to last until early 2023, as floods have hit some regions in the province.

Pranowo noted that the regions affected by the disaster included Semarang City, Pekalongan City, Pemalang District, and Pati District.

“We ask the public to remain vigilant because this condition is estimated by the BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency) to occur until January 3, 2023, so we must be on full alert every day,” he remarked.

The governor has also appealed to the Central Java Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and volunteers to ready logistics, rescue equipment, and evacuation points in the event of an emergency situation.

“In Semarang City, as of 8 a.m. local time, the water level was still as high as the sidewalk. I have reviewed the situation there, and it was starting to recede. Hopefully, when the intensity of the rain subsides, it (the road) can be cleaned right away (from the flooding materials),” he stated.

The flooding occurred due to heavy rains in the region that fell since Friday evening.

Pranowo had visited several locations affected by the disaster in Semarang City, such as the Simpang Lima area, Gajah Raya Street, Tlogosari, as well as the water pump centers in Sawah Besar and Waru.

Officers at both the water pump centers notified Pranowo that all machines functioned properly.

However, officers at the Waru Water Pump Center said they had to stop operating the pumps in the center, as the water discharge had exceeded the capacity of the machines.

Thus, the governor urged the personnel of the pump center to be on standby and be ready to operate the machines if the water level started to recede.

The height of floodwaters in the affected areas in Semarang City, including Tlogosari Sub-district, Kaligawe Village, Mangkang Village, Ngaliyan Sub-district, and Tugu Sub-district, reached around 50 centimeters to over one meter.

In addition to the residential areas, flooding also inundated the roads, causing traffic jams at several locations.

Govt supporting West Bali development with toll road construction: Uno

This is our homework so that our recovery becomes better, more evenly distributed, and more sustainable.

Jakarta The government is constructing the Jembrana-Denpasar Toll Road infrastructure to support the development of West Bali, according to Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno.

Based on an estimate, the construction of the toll road infrastructure between Jembrana and Denpasar will be completed by 2025.

“We have to be ready because Jembrana will be passed by a toll road that will connect Denpasar and it will be connected in 2025,” the minister said in an official statement released on Saturday.

“Therefore, we have to prepare the tourism ecosystem because everything will start to move to West Bali,” he added while visiting Jembrana, Bali.

The development of tourism and creative economy in West Bali is one of the programs that will continue to be strengthened to achieve equal distribution of tourists, he informed.

This will help ensure that tourists are not concentrated in just East and South Bali.

Bali is still considered a top-of-the-mind global tourism destination. This is an opportunity that should be utilized in an optimal manner through the development of West Bali.

“This is our optimism. Thus, the tourism and creative economy ecosystem should be prepared here. This is our homework so that our recovery becomes better, more evenly distributed, and more sustainable,” Uno remarked.

In 2023, the number of domestic and international tourist visits is targeted to increase two-fold.

The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy aims to attract 7.4 million international tourists to Indonesia. It is also seeking to push the mobility of domestic tourists to 1.2–1.4 billion.

“This should be responded to by the entire tourism and creative economy actors. We cannot lag behind. We have to prepare it to open broad business opportunities and certainly job opportunities,” Uno said.

All ethics violation complaints to be treated equally: DKPP head

Jakarta The General Elections Organizer Honorary Council (DKPP) emphasized that the institution would give equal treatment to all complaints related to ethics violations committed by electoral organizers.

“If you ask whether we prioritize some complaints, (the answer will be) negative. We treat all cases equally,” DKPP Chairperson Heddy Lugito stated here, Saturday.

The agency will process all complaints according to which one is registered first, he emphasized.

“We will neither prioritize nor neglect any case,” he emphasized.

Lugito said the slow process perceived by some parties is due to the large number of complaints received by DKPP.

The agency is facing a shortage of personnel to handle all incoming complaints, including investigating ethics violations complaints, he stated.

“I admit that we are a bit slow, but we could provide an explanation. DKPP has only 114 employees, while the ideal number is 216. At present, (the employee figure) is half of the ideal number,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, Lugito said the DKPP received 124 complaints related to suspected ethics violations in 2022.

“In this year, the DKPP has received 124 complaints, and in December, we received the largest number of complaints. We received a total of 44 complaints in December alone,” he noted.

He explained that Article 159 of Law No. 7 of 2017 on Elections outlined DKPP’s duties, authorities, and obligations in general elections.

According to Lugito, the DKPP is required to preserve justice, independence, impartiality, and transparency, as well as ensure electoral organizers observe ethics while performing their tasks in general elections.

Moreover, the DKPP must remain neutral and passive, not use cases to elevate personal popularity, and to announce any decisions it reached to be followed up by relevant authorities, Lugito remarked.
