Sophi.io is INMA 2022 Global Media Awards Finalist for Print Automation

TORONTO, March 10, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Sophi.io, The Globe and Mail’s AI-powered automation and optimization platform, was announced this week as a finalist in the International News Media Association (INMA)’s 2022 Global Media Awards in the category of Best Innovation in Newsroom Transformation. Partnering with Naviga, it automated print laydown for Agderposten, a regional daily newspaper that serves over 25,000 readers across Norway, and increased print efficiencies by 66%.

“Sophi’s automated machine-learning system is the biggest transformation to print media in decades,” said Gordon Edall, Co-Founder at Sophi.io. “We’re grateful that Agderposten chose to work with Naviga and us. Their commitment to improving efficiency and embracing ground-breaking technology like Naviga Publisher powered by Sophi.io should inspire the entire media industry to look forward to a future where AI and automation helps everyone.”

Naviga Publisher powered by Sophi.io is an artificial intelligence-powered system that emulates human decisions to produce newspaper pages that look like they were created with an understanding of the news of the day as well as high journalistic standards. All editors need to do is roughly prioritize articles and hit the “Print My Newspaper” button to generate an automated print laydown, without templates, in minutes. Handing over this labour-intensive task lets newsrooms focus on their real objective of finding and telling the next important story.

“It’s hours saved for journalism,” said Agderposten’s Editor-in-Chief Katrine Lia. And the staff at Agderposten often cannot tell the difference between pages produced by Sophi and those handled by their editors.

Sophi and Naviga, a large software technology provider for the global publishing industry, have been working with Agderposten for more than a year now and successes there have paved the way to bringing dozens of new titles from several major publishing houses on board this year. Sophi provides cutting edge AI and ML technology that, along with Naviga Publisher, fully automates the end-to-end print production workflow.

Agderposten was the first customer to use Publisher. Its print production process is now centralized, its newspaper laydown is up to 80% automated, and most impressively, Agderposten has realized a 66% reduction in time and resources – lowering the cost of producing the printed newspaper and letting journalists work on creating digital content rather than operating InDesign.

Agderposten CEO Øyvind Klausen said he expected cost savings and efficiency would continue to increase as more of Agderposten’s pages were automated and more of its newspapers implemented the print automation solution.

The Global Media Awards received 854 entries from 252 news brands in 46 countries this year. The judges consist of 50 media experts from 24 countries focused across 20 categories, including news brands, media platforms, subscriptions, advertising, data and insights, product, and newsrooms. The first place winners will be announced on June 9.

IESF World E-sports Championship to support sports tourism: PBESI

IESF World E-sports Championship, which will start on November 27, 2022, is expected to contribute to the sports tourism sector, chairman of the Indonesian E-sports Executive Board (PBESI) Bambang Sunarwibowo said.

It is hoped that the selection of Bali as the location and host of the international match would help develop sports tourism in the country, he added.

“Hence, the e-sports ecosystem in Indonesia will develop well, and we hope this can also raise international impressions on Indonesia,” he said at a virtual press conference here on Friday.

According to Sunarwibowo, the hope to enhance the country’s e-sports ecosystem emerged from the projection that about 1,500 participants from more than 120 countries will take part in the IESF World E-sports Championship.

He highlighted that e-sports have become part of Indonesian society, with about 52 million Indonesians participating in the ecosystem, including athletes, enthusiasts, and young people.

Seeing the Indonesian society’s huge interest in e-sports, it is hoped that the ecosystem can be further built and developed, he said.

According to Sunarwibowo, the IESF World E-sports Championship has become an important agenda in the PBESI’s great design for 2022, which will be one of the major milestones in the history of e-sports development in Indonesia.

To ensure the success of the event, he said PBESI is coordinating with all parties to guarantee readiness from many aspects, starting from location and accommodation, management to athlete conditions.

If the preparations receive great evaluations by the organizer, IESF, Indonesia will gain confidence for the future and have a better chance to host the international event, he explained.

“PBSEI, which is very young, only two years old, really hope to be able to hold this international event well,” he remarked.

He also said that the world championship is not only important for e-sports development but also for accelerating the national economy, especially in the digital creative and tourism industry.

Unveiling the secrets of Indonesia’s deep seas

Around 62 percent of the territory of Indonesia, which is strategically located between the Pacific and the Indian oceans, consists of water. The archipelagic nation has a total sea area of 6.4 million square kilometers and a shoreline spanning 108 thousand kilometers.

Despite Indonesia being the largest island country, deep-sea exploration in the country remains limited. Indonesia’s deep seas still hold secrets of marine life, diversity, and resources that are waiting to be uncovered.

According to the National Research and Innovation Agency’s acting director for ship armada management, Nugroho Dwi Hananto, at the global level, up to 80 percent of seas and oceans on the Earth are yet to be properly mapped as continued marine exploration is necessary to make more detailed mapping possible.

The acting director also said that less than 20 percent of Indonesia’s seas have been properly explored and mapped, leaving a significant information gap that necessitates continued scientific exploration and economic exploitation.

The current situation ought to motivate Indonesian researchers to conduct research to obtain information and data on unexplored sea areas that can produce new scientific discoveries, he remarked.

“The secrets of our deep sea and oceans remain sealed; and it is our duty to expose and reveal the mysteries and secrets, as well as to study the possible use of living and non-living marine resources to produce new scientific innovation,” Hananto said.

Shallow seas—seas with a depth of less than 200 meters such as the Java and Natuna seas—only constitute 30–40 percent of Indonesia’s seas, he noted.

In contrast, around 60 percent of Indonesia’s seas have a depth of more than 200 meters—the deepest point in Indonesia is located in Banda Sea, which has a depth of 7,400 meters below sea level, he said.

He highlighted that sophisticated facilities and technology, as well as scientific capability, are a necessity to conduct marine research and surveys to explore Indonesia’s marine potential in unexplored areas.

To help Indonesian researchers to explore Indonesian seas, BRIN has launched the Sailing Day program in 2022 that would provide marine researchers with research funding and facilities free of charge, he informed.

Inclusive, open access, and facilities

The Sailing Day program is intended to provide open and inclusive access to researchers, university lecturers, and university students to utilize BRIN’s research ships to obtain data and specimens necessary for marine research, BRIN head Laksana Tri Handoko said.

Handoko further said he expected that facilities provided under the Sailing Day scheme—which includes coverage of the cruise cost, onboard accommodation and meals, and technical and operational services of research equipment on board—will motivate Indonesian researchers to conduct marine expeditions and collaborate with domestic and foreign partners to bolster research.

BRIN is currently operating five research ships of which KR Baruna Jaya I is the oldest, followed by KR Baruna Jaya II, KR Baruna Jaya III, KR Baruna Jaya IV, and KR Baruna Jaya VIII, which is the newest vessel in the armada, he informed. Each ship has its own marine research and seabed mapping equipment, he added.

KR Baruna Jaya I was constructed at the French CMN shipyard in 1989, while KR Baruna Jaya VIII was made in the Norwegian Mjellem & Karlsen shipyard in 1998, he said, adding that KR Baruna Jaya I to IV are sister ships due to their same dimensions.

KR Baruna Jaya is equipped with a mounted MBES Teledyne Hydroswept system that can create a seabed map at up to 10 thousand meters depth, while the MBES Kongsberg EM304 system on KR Baruna Jaya III can create a seabed map at 8 thousand meters depth, he informed.

Furthermore, the MBES Elac Seabeam 3050 portable system on KR Baruna Jaya II and IV can create a seabed map at a depth of 3 thousand meters, and KR Baruna Jaya VIII has a mounted MBES Reson system that can map the seabed at a depth of 500 meters, he added.

Gov’t to focus on welfare to resolve Papua situation: VP

Vice President Ma’ruf Amin has said that the government will resolve security disturbances in Papua region through peaceful efforts such as by improving the welfare of the community.

“We will still prioritize improving the people’s welfare to handle the security disruptions,” he said while inspecting Cipinang Rice Market, East Jakarta, on Friday.

The government must implement a dynamic defensive attempt for maintaining the security of the region to avoid any casualties, he added.

“We do not use offensive security attempts. We prioritize to protect the community, thus there will be no more victims,” he remarked.

Furthermore, the Vice President said that the government has also discussed the matter with various parties.

“We do not want the disturbances to happen again in the future,” he emphasized.

According to the Presidential Staff Office, between January and early March 2022, there have been at least seven alleged acts of violence committed by Papuan separatist groups (KKB) in several districts in Papua province.

The incidents claimed a total of 13 lives and left 5 people injured, it said. The victims were military personnel and civilians, it added.

Armed separatists killed a gold miner in Yahukimo district on March 7, 2022, and injured a construction worker in Intan Jaya district on March 8. The worker sustained injuries on the neck.

In addition, separatists attacked employees of telecommunication company PT Palapa Timur Telematika (PTT) in Puncak district on March 2.

About ten KKB members shot eight PT PTT workers when they stayed overnight night at their camp to repair a base transceiver station (BTS).

Due to the difficult terrain and bad weather, the only survivor of the attack, Nelson Sarira, was evacuated to Mimika district on March 5 by the Peace Cartenz Task Force.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the victims were moved to Mimika Regional Hospital for identification and post-mortem examination on Monday 7.

Synergy key for success in 2024 elections: Bawaslu

Commissioner of the General Elections Supervisory Board (Bawaslu) Mochammad Afifuddin has said he expects synergy with the General Elections Commission (KPU), the public and voters, and political parties to make the 2024 elections a success.

“We hope that synergy with the general public and other stakeholders will enhance further to answer challenges and ensure the success of the 2024 general election,” he said during a public discussion on the organization of the 2024 elections, accessed online from Jakarta on Friday.

Several issues might arise during the elections, such as election fraud, violations of electoral regulations, and money politics, he highlighted.

Afifuddin, who will soon leave Bawaslu following his selection as KPU RI commissioner, then urged stakeholders in the election to comprehend and observe electoral regulations.

Compliance with electoral regulations during the election will improve the quality of election organization in Indonesia, he added.

“Our election conduct can improve, but if the election is performed without complying with the legal basis, then everyone will question the election’s conduct,” the commissioner said.

During the discussion, Afifuddin also expressed his views regarding several political leaders and public members proposing a delay in election or an extension of the Presidential term that is set to expire in 2024.

He said that the Constitution must be referred to while responding to discourses made by political leaders, and the discourses must not proceed and must be stopped if they violate the Constitution and prevailing laws.

“We must respond to those discourses by referring to the Constitution or the direction that will lead to democracy. In opposite, we need not respond to the discourse if it violates the Constitution,” Afifuddin remarked.

Gov’t asks Indonesia’s coffee entrepreneurs to push exports

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto has urged Indonesian coffee entrepreneurs to expand their branding and export their products overseas.

“We hope Indonesian entrepreneurs will push their products in overseas markets because I believe all hotels in the world surely have coffee shops. We hope Indonesia’s coffee can top the global coffee industry,” Hartarto remarked at the 2022 Indonesia Premium Coffee Expo & Forum opening ceremony, which was broadcast online on Friday.

Coffee is the third-largest agricultural commodity in Indonesia after palm and rubber, he noted.

Coffee contributes around 16.15 percent to the national GDP, and around seven million households are dependent on the coffee industry, he added.

Indonesia’s coffee production has also increased by 250 percent in the last ten years, bolstering Indonesia’s status as the fourth largest coffee producer after Brazil, Vietnam, and Colombia, the coordinating minister said.

“This is our time to close the gap in coffee production. Indonesia has a diverse geographical identity and condition to grow various types of coffee, and every coffee producer, no matter what their brand is, must inform their coffee identity in Indonesia,” Hartarto added.

The development of various types of coffee has been bolstered by high demand and interest among Indonesian youth, particularly for premium coffee, he said.

Consumers are also interested in trying more types of coffees besides Toraja coffee, such as the Luwak (civet) coffee and other premium-priced coffees, the minister added.

Hartarto expressed the hope that the 2022 Indonesia Premium Coffee Expo & Forum, scheduled to take place in a hybrid format from March to June, will bolster the national coffee industry.

It is hoped that Indonesia’s coffee entrepreneurs will follow the path of Kopi Kenangan, which has become a publicly-traded company, and Kopiko coffee candy brand that has gained a significant market share in the Philippines, he added.
