Religious Persecution Against Tai Ji Men

Lanterns of Conscience Illuminating a Brighter Path to Religious Freedom

Members of Tai Ji Men display traditional Tai Ji Men lanterns, which symbolize that conscience lights up people’s hearts and guides them to make the right decision, respect and tolerate one another, and create a world of love and peace where conscience prevails.

Despite 24 years of ongoing violations of their human rights and religious freedom, Tai Ji Men continues to Promote Love, Peace, and Conscience Around the World

Action Alliance to Redress 1219 is a partner of International Religious Freedom (IRF) Summit 2021

WASHINGTON, July 15, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The International Religious Freedom (IRF) Summit 2021 held at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington D.C. on July 13–15 is the largest and most important religious freedom event of the year, with over 1,000 people participating, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former Congressman Frank Wolf, USCIRF Commissioner Nury Turkel, and other advocates to raise awareness of religious liberty in all corners of the world.

In addition to plenary and breakout sessions, there is an exhibition hall where representatives of every major religion and many organizations have set up booths to showcase their missions to attendees seeking to learn more. Hundreds of people came by the exhibition hall, drawn in by the colorful costumes of the Action Alliance to Redress 1219 booth to learn about Tai Ji Men, which has self-funded trips to 101 nations to promote love, peace, and conscience under the guidance of its leader Dr. Hong, Tao-Tze. At the booth today, members of Tai Ji Men displayed traditional Tai Ji Men lanterns, which symbolize brightness and pointing people in the right direction. The lanterns also symbolize conscience, which guides people to make the right decision, respect and tolerate one another, and apply their conscience to create a world of love and peace where human rights prevail.

Tai Ji Men is an organization rooted in esoteric Taoism and has 15 chapters in the United States and Taiwan. It has tens of thousands of members from all around the world, who benefit from practicing Tai Ji Men Qigong. Since it was formally chartered in 1966, the nature of Tai Ji Men Qigong Academy has remained unchanged. The deeper history of the organization that emphasizes wisdom and martial arts has been passed down from Shifu (master) to his dizi (disciples) from generation to generation. The organization has been dedicated to promoting a culture of love and peace, as well as improving global citizens’ physical, mental, and spiritual health.

In 2001, during the 54th Annual DPI/NGO Conference, the 9/11 attacks occurred, the deadliest attacks on US soil. After that, many people were anxious to leave New York. Dr. Hong and his dizi (disciples), who had gone to New York for the Conference, chose to stay there to host the “Ceremony of Ringing the Bell of World Peace and Love” to calm people’s hearts and pray for the United States and the world, with UN ambassadors, leaders of NGOs from various countries, and many peace promoters in attendance.

Tai Ji Men’s chapters in California have been actively involved in their respective communities for over two decades and have been highly praised by visionaries in various fields.

At the invitation of Senator Jesse Helms, the then Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Tai Ji Men organized a cultural program on Capitol Hill in 2000. Mayor Anthony A. Williams of the District of Columbia proclaimed March 22, 2000 as the Tai Ji Men Qigong Academy Day in Washington, D.C. and praised Tai Ji Men as International Ambassadors of Goodwill and Peace.

Mayor Jeremy Harris of the City and County of Honolulu proclaimed September 16, 2001 as Tai Ji Men Qigong Academy and Dr. Hong Tao-Tze Day, in recognition of Dr. Hong and Tai Ji Men’s contributions to advancing cultural exchanges and harmony among nations.

Additionally, Mayor Tom Bates of the City of Berkeley proclaimed August 5, 2005, as the Federation of World Peace and Love Day in the city of Berkeley, in recognition of Dr. Hong’s dedication to leading FOWPAL to promote peace and love for all humanity. (Dr. Hong is the president of the Federation of World Peace and Love).

Tragically, despite praise from presidents of Taiwan and international acclaim, Tai Ji Men has been persecuted in Taiwan, with its leader’s and members’ human rights and religious freedom being violated for over 24 years! In 1996, the Taiwanese government conducted a political purge targeting religious organizations. A prosecutor named Hou Kuan-jen falsely accused Tai Ji Men and Dr. Hong of fraud, tax evasion, and raising goblins, with fake witnesses and fabricated evidence. It took Tai Ji Men more than a decade to be found innocent of tax evasion and all other charges by the criminal division of the Supreme Court in 2007, confirming that Tai Ji Men did not owe any tax. However, the case did not end there. Taiwan’s National Taxation Bureau ignored the Supreme Court’s final decision and continued to issue unjustified tax bills to Tai Ji Men, resulting in the unlawful seizure and confiscation of its sacred land for self-cultivation last year, generating massive peaceful protests on the streets and drawing the attention and igniting discussions from international scholars and experts in the areas of human rights, religion, and law.

Tai Ji Men members from across the United States actively participated in the 2021 International Religious Freedom (IRF) Summit, speaking out to the world and urging the Taiwanese government to resolve this case of injustice as soon as possible, return to Tai Ji Men its sacred land for self-cultivation, and protect people’s freedom of religion or belief, which is a fundamental right.

Over the past 24 years, under the leadership of Dr. Hong, Tao-Tze, worldwide members of Tai Ji Men have never given up hope and have insisted on doing the right thing, even though they have been persecuted for 24 years. During this time, they have visited 101 nations to promote love, peace, and conscience through cultural exchange. Tai Ji Men’s shifu (master) and dizi (disciples) hope to use their own experience to encourage others suffering similar plights to continue seeking justice and working together for a world where people follow their conscience and enjoy human rights, religious freedom, and equality.

About Action Alliance to Redress 1219: Action Alliance to Redress 1219 is a group of international and Taiwanese legal, religious, and human rights specialists working to restore the truth about the ongoing persecution of Tai Ji Men in Taiwan by a small group of bureaucrats that has lasted for 24 years, as well as their misuse of authority and violations of the law. In addition to rectifying the Tai Ji Men case and revealing the truth, it is also committed to defending religious freedom and calling on those in power not to infringe on people’s human rights.

ITA ready for take-off in October with new 2021-2025 plan approved by EU Commission

ROME and BRUSSELS, Belgium, July 15, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — ITA (Italia Trasporto Aereo) will be operational from October the 15th, flying a fleet of 52 aircraft that will grow to 105 by the end of 2025, as envisaged in the 2021-2025 business plan approved by the Board of Directors of the newly established company destined to take over from Alitalia. The plan also provides for the ‘discontinuity’ requested by the European Commission during negotiations with the Italian Government over the past few months. ITA will be able to acquire, through direct negotiation with Alitalia, the assets to manage the flight sector, the so-called ‘aviation’ branch. The Alitalia brand will be sold through a public tender, issued and managed by Alitalia, in which ITA itself will participate, as it believes that the brand is an essential element for the plan. ‘Ground Handling’ and ‘Maintenance’ activities will also be contracted through a public tender.

ITA will initially operate with a fleet of 52 aircraft. By 2022, it will grow to 78 aircraft and, from 2022 onwards, new-generation aircraft will be gradually added to the fleet. By the end of 2025, the number of aircraft will rise to 105. Over the plan period, ITA plans to rely on a single strategic partner for aircraft, and discussions are underway with the main partners. All employees will be hired under a new employment contract. The ‘Aviation’ branch is expected to employ 2.750-2.950 people, rising to 5.550-5.700 by 2025. In the event that ITA is awarded contracts for the ‘Ground Handling’ and ‘Maintenance’ activities, 2.650-2.700 and 1.100-1.250 staff are expected to be employed respectively.

ITA’s plan has been approved, forecasting a turnover that will reach  3.329 million euros in 2025, with an economic result of 209 million euros and an operational break-even to be reached by third quarter 2023.

At first, the airline will fly to 45 destinations with 61 routes, growing to 74 destinations and 89 routes by 2025. As for long-haul routes, ITA will initially provide connections to New York, Tokyo, Boston and Miami, but new routes to São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Washington and Los Angeles are expected to be added in the summer 2022. From Fiumicino (Rome) and Linate (Milan) airports there will be connections to the main EU destinations. During the shareholders’ meeting scheduled for July, it will be decided on an initial capital increase of 700 million euros.

ITA’s executive chairman Alfredo Altavilla stated: “The approval of ITA’s business plan by the European Commission and the confirmation of compliance with the MEOP, which certifies the soundness of the project in terms of private investment by the public shareholder, is an important result that paves the way for the launch of ITA. Now, within 90 days, we should complete the transition leading to the take-off of the first aircraft on 15 October. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the Italian Government and our representatives in Brussels for the teamwork that made it possible to achieve this important result after months of negotiations, and which we trust will continue in the months to come”.

The CEO and managing director of ITA, Fabio Lazzerini, said: “I am particularly satisfied with the acknowledgement of the industrial and financial solidity underlying the approval of the Plan. A plan which, starting from the customer and its needs, will place ITA among the best companies in Europe in terms of economic, social and environmental sustainability, while guaranteeing connectivity to businesses, tourists and citizens. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the ITA team for the enthusiastic and total commitment with which they have worked during these challenging months, and to the institutions and stakeholders in the sector (ENAC, ENAV, the airport system) for the openness and trust they are showing us. Now we face the great challenge of launching a successful airline in three months. A challenge to which we will devote all our energy.”

Tourist villages emblematic of Indonesia’s economic revival: Minister

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Tourist villages are a symbol of Indonesia’s economic revival since their development would have positive impacts on the welfare of local communities, Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno stated.

“The recent tourism trend has shown that tourist village is Indonesia’s tourism future and the symbol of our economic revival,” Uno remarked during an online technical guidance and workshop of the 2021 Indonesian Tourism Village Award (ADWI) here on Friday.

The ministry will fully support the development of tourism villages since it creates jobs and offers economic benefits to the public amid the pandemic, according to the minister.

“We will work all out at the ministry to promote tourist villages since they can create as many jobs as possible and will be impartial and fair to people of the lower middle class segment currently seeking economic benefits amid the pandemic,” he stressed.

He also urged stakeholders to play an important role in collaborating with each other in the 3C framework — competence, commitment, and champions — as well as to create programs that are right on target, right on benefit, and on time.

Uno emphasized that the ministry will expedite potential development of tourism villages in collaboration with villages, development of disadvantaged regions and transmigration ministry as well as other ministries and institutions. “Thus, we can realize a prosperous and just Indonesia. It is not Indonesia that builds the villages, but villages that build Indonesia. This our joint efforts to preserve the potential cultures and local wisdom values,” Jakarta’s former deputy governor stated.

At a similar event, the ministry’s deputy of destination and infrastructure development Vinsesius Jemadu noted that one of the government’s efforts to realize qualified, competitive, and sustainable development of tourist villages is by holding the 2021 ADWI.

The 2021 ADWI aims at designating tourist villages as world-class, competitive, and sustainable tourist destinations that are able to boost local development, people’s welfare, and tourism promotion events to either local or international travelers.

“We expect that the ADWI can encourage industrial players of the tourism and creative economy sector to develop tourist villages to support a strong, resilient, and resurgent economy,” Jemadu affirmed.

Apart from the 2021 ADWI, in a bid to demonstrate the government’s commitment in developing tourist villages, it has run a certification program on sustainable tourist village under which 60 tourist villages will receive certification this year.

Indonesia’s external debt declines to US$415 bln in May

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s external debt (ULN) declined 0.6 percent to US$415 billion in May, 2021 from US$417.6 billion in April, 2020, led by a narrowing of the government’s external debt position, Bank Indonesia (BI) has said.

However, on an annual basis, Indonesia’s external debt in May, 2021 swelled 3.1 percent, which was lower than the growth of 4.9 percent recorded in the previous month, it added.

“Indonesia’s external debt structure in May, 2021 remained under control, as reflected in the ratio of Indonesia’s external debt to gross domestic product (GDP), which was maintained at around 37.6 percent, a decrease compared to the ratio in the previous month of 37.9 percent,” BI’s communication department head, Erwin Haryono, informed in a statement released in Jakarta on Friday.

Indonesia’s external debt structure remains healthy and is supported by the application of prudential principles, as demonstrated by the dominance of long-term debt, which accounts for 88.5 percent of the total foreign debt, he said. .

To maintain a healthy external debt structure, the central bank and the government will continue to strengthen coordination in monitoring its development, supported by the application of prudential principles in its management, he added.

The role of external debt will also continue to be optimized in supporting development financing and encouraging the National Economic Recovery (PEN) program by minimizing risks that can affect economic stability, Haryono said. The position of the government’s external debt in May, 2021 was recorded at US$203.4 billion, down 1.3 percent compared to April, 2021, he informed.

“The position prompted a slowdown in the government’s annual external debt growth to 5.9 percent in May, 2021 compared to 8.6 percent in April, 2021. The decline in the government’s external debt position was in line with the falling payments of government securities (SBN) and loan in foreign currency, which was due in May, 2021,” he said.

The government is committed to maintaining credibility by fulfilling debt obligations in a timely manner, as well as managing external debt in a prudent, credible, and accountable manner, so that the withdrawal of government external debt in May, 2021 will continue to be prioritized to support priority spending, including efforts to handle COVID-19 and the national economic recovery (PEN) program, Haryono said.

Expenditure will focus on the government administration, defense, and compulsory social security sector (17.8 percent of the total government external debt), the health services and social activities sector (17.2 percent), the education services sector (16.3 percent), the construction sector (15.4 percent), and the financial services and insurance sector (12.6 percent), he added.

“The position of the government’s external debt is relatively safe and under control considering that almost all of it is long-term external debt, with a share of 99.99 percent of the government’s total external debt,” Haryono remarked.

KSP calls for streamlining subsidized fuel distribution to fishermen

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Office of Presidential Staff (KSP) has sought more efficient distribution of subsidized fuel among fishermen through better communication between ministries and institutions.

“We encourage the distribution of subsidized fuel for fishermen to be more optimal. The accuracy of recipient data needs governance breakthroughs,” deputy I for infrastructure, energy and investment, KSP, Febry Calvin Tetelepta said in a statement issued in Jakarta on Friday.

To support fishermen, the KSP needs to ensure that problems related to distribution blockages can be resolved, he added.

The development of the maritime sector is one of the priorities of the Joko Widodo-Ma’ruf Amin government, he pointed out.

The KSP is aware of problems related to the accuracy of recipient data, he said.

As a result of such problems, the realization of absorption of subsidized fuel in 2020 reached 500 thousand kiloliters, or about 26 percent of the total quota, he added. Since 2018, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has proposed a 1.9-million kiloliter quota for certain types of fuel (JBT) and subsidized diesel oil for all fishing boats with a capacity of up to 30 gross tons (GT), Tetelepta said.

To obtain the subsidized fuel, fishermen need to register with the KKP, have their data verified, and bring recommendations from the local regional work unit (SKPD), he informed.

Currently, the government is also trying to optimize the development of Maluku as a national fish barn, he said. It is hoped that the fuel subsidy for fishermen in Maluku can be made available, he added.

“As one of the places for this pilot project, we have to ensure that Maluku, a national fish barn, has no problems with distribution,” Tetelepta said.

The mechanism for applying for subsidized fuel should be simplified, he added.

One of the factors affecting recipient data accuracy is the complex and multiple set of requirements in the application which the fishermen have to complete, Tetelepta pointed out.

“The requirements for obtaining subsidized fuel must be simplified using the Kusuka card from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. I hope we can all arrange a timeline for the implementation of the pilot project, the absorption of subsidized fuel for fishermen, and the acceleration of data collection for the Kusuka card,” he said.

No severe side-effect surfaces in vaccinated children: Pediatrician

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Chief of the Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI) of Jakarta Chapter Prof. Dr Rini Sekartini, SpA (K) reported no severe Post-Immunization Accidents (KIPI) in children administered the COVID-19 vaccination, with research conducted showing the COVID-19 vaccine proven safe for children.

“The most common symptom was pain at the injection site with no fever thereafter,” Sekartini told ANTARA on Thursday, (July 15).

She explained that the COVID-19 vaccine for children served the same purpose as other vaccines, specifically to stimulate the production of antibodies in their bodies.

“We are optimistic that the vaccine would protect children from severe symptoms and contribute to building herd immunity,” she noted. On July 1, 2021, the Ministry of Health had issued a circular on vaccination for the public, vulnerable group of people, and children in the age bracket of 12-17 years.

According to the Ministry of Health’s official release, COVID-19 vaccination for children is available at healthcare facilities and schools, madrasahs, Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in collaboration with Education Authorities and the local office of Ministry of Religion.

“Child vaccination is now available at several healthcare facilities. Jakarta residents could register through the JAKI application,” she noted.

No different rule was applicable for child and adult vaccination in terms of the screening, execution, and observation. Vaccination participants were required to bring along their family card or other documents that included the kid’s Citizenship Identification Numbers (NIK).

Sinovac vaccine, of 0.5-ml dosage, will be administered twice to children. In total, the children will receive 1ml dose of vaccine at a gap of 28 days.

“Virus transmission nowadays mostly occurred in a family cluster. Hence, kids would be easily infected as well,” the pediatrician stated.

According to information on the COVID-19 cases in Jakarta on Friday (July 16), 4,090 infants below one year of age had contracted the infection, 16,019 cases among infants of one to four years of age, and 72,022 cases involving children that were five to 18 years of age.

“We must practice health protocols for adults and children. If you wanted to go outside, make sure you cleaned yourself well before interacting with other family members at home,” Sekartini emphasized.

The pediatrician also reminded that children should be in good health and be COVID-19 free before getting vaccinated.

President orders immediate utilization of remaining vaccine stocks

Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Joko Widodo has directed local governments, the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI), and the Indonesian Police (Polri) to use up 19 million COVID-19 vaccine doses kept as reserve immediately, the Health Minister said.

“He understands that vaccine stocks are being held in the regions as second jab reserves at 19 million. He has instructed that they be used up immediately because more vaccines are arriving,” Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said at an online press conference following a limited cabinet meeting chaired by the President here on Friday.

The vaccine stocks in the regions totaled 75 million doses previously, of which 56 million doses were administered to 40 million people, Sadikin informed. The remaining 19 million doses were planned to be used to administer the second shots, he added.

By the end of August, 2021, it is estimated that Indonesia will receive 30 million additional vaccine doses, he said.

The availability of sufficient COVID-19 vaccines is crucial as the President has ordered that vaccinations be expanded to cover two million people per day, he added.

“The President’s directive is that all regional governments, the TNI, Polri immediately use this stock of 19 million doses,” Sadikin said. Since mid-June, 2021, Indonesia has been battling a drastic spike in COVID-19 cases following the spread of the Delta variant in the world’s fourth most populous nation of over 270 million people.

The Task Force for COVID-19 Handling on Friday recorded 56,757 daily cases, bringing the tally to 2,726,803. With 982 Indonesians succumbing to the virus in a single day, the death toll reached 70,192.

As of July 15, 2021, a total of 15.8 million Indonesians have received both doses of COVID-19 vaccines, while 39.6 million others have received their first shots, mostly of the Sinovac vaccine bought from China, under the vaccination drive being conducted since January 13, 2021, it said.

Indonesia has also begun to receive other vaccines, including 14.7 million AstraZeneca doses, donated by Japan and supplied through the COVAX facility; 3 million Moderna vaccines, donated by the US this July; and, Sinopharm vaccines, partly donated by the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The remainder have been bought by the country’s private sector to support the government’s vaccination program, the task force said.
