The latest controversy over the hijab, the headscarf worn by Muslim women, erupted at the end of October. Ironically, the trigger was an anti-discrimination campaign launched by the Council of Europe. The Council posted a short video on its social media channels comprising a series of images split in half. One side features a woman wearing a hijab, and the other shows the same woman without the head covering. At the end of the video, the text “Beauty is in diversity as freedom is in hijab” appears, followed by the hashtags #celebratediversity and #JOYinHIJAB. The video caused an uproar in Fran… Continue reading “Freedom in the veil”

The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI), a state regulating agency, issued a circulation letter in June 2021, telling local radio stations that they could not air 42 English language songs including songs by Bruno Mars, Jay-Z, and many more during daytime hours, except between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. The listed songs were considered morally hazardous because they mentioned sexuality, alcohol, or vices. Buffeted by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Pacific on the other, the Mitre Peninsula, at the far southern tip of South America, is one of the coldest, harshest places on the planet. “It’s the end of the earth,” said Martina Sasso, program coordinator at Rewilding Argentina But this 2,400-square-kilometer slab is also a complex, carbon-rich wetland that holds 85% of all of Argentina’s peat. “The amazing part of this ecosystem, this great wetland, is that it is almost pristine,” Sasso told Mongabay. These Patagonian peatlands are the main carbon sink outside of the tropics in the souther… Continue reading “‘Cooling the climate for 10,000 years’: How saving wetlands can help save the world”

VP describes target to lower stunting prevalence as ambitious

Vice President Ma’ruf Amin believes the target to lower the prevalence of childhood stunting in Indonesia is quite ambitious, as it aims to decrease the rate by 13 percent by 2024.

“Currently, the prevalence of stunting in Indonesia was still recorded at around 27 percent. This means in order to achieve the target of 14 percent by 2024, we only have less than three years left. The target is quite ambitious,” Amin delivered the statement at the virtual opening of the 2021 National Stunting Forum on Tuesday.

Amin called for collective efforts from the central and regional governments as well as the public to tackle the challenge of reducing the prevalence of stunting.

“In the very short time left, this is a huge challenge. Nonetheless, we must face it together,” the vice president emphasized.

Hence, Amin urged all stakeholders, comprising relevant ministries, non-ministerial government institutions, and regional governments, to work harder in line with the commitment in order to fulfill the ambitious target.

“It is not without reason that commitment is the first pillar in the National Stunting Strategy. Strong commitment is very important to ensure that all the contributing actors are present,” he affirmed.

Amin highlighted that efforts to prioritize stunting reduction in regional development was one of the commitments in question. In addition, Amin pressed for better adherence to the commitment as a way to optimize coordination.

“This included a commitment to strengthen coordination, monitoring, and evaluation to ensure that the program runs well,” he affirmed.

The vice president reminded everyone of the criticality of cooperation to eradicate stunting, as the government could not singlehandedly achieve it.

“Efforts to reduce stunting necessitate the involvement of all stakeholders, including the regional governments, villages, urban villages, academics, media, private sector, non-governmental organizations, and development partners,” he affirmed.
