Some 350 World Leaders From 157 Nations With Diplomatic Relations With North or South Korea Attended the August 11-15, Conference

International Leadership Summit Addresses Korean Reconciliation, Religious Freedom, and New Peace Alliances in Africa and the World

Washington, DC, Aug. 14, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UPF International Leadership Summit Addresses Korean Reconciliation, Religious Freedom, and

New Peace Alliances in Africa and the World

Condolences Expressed for late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe

International leaders at the Universal Peace Federation’s (UPF) Summit 2022 and Leadership Conference affirmed their support for global peacebuilding, especially on the Korean Peninsula. Sessions addressed the universal right to religious freedom and called for more education of youth in Africa.

Some 350 world leaders from the 157 nations with diplomatic relations with either North or South Korea attended the August 11-15, 2022, conference, either in person or virtually, at Jamsil Lotte Hotel in Seoul, to discuss “Toward Peace on the Korean Peninsula: Toward a World Culture of Peace.” In his welcoming remarks, UPF Chairman Thomas G. Walsh expressed hope that the focus and vision for peace on the Korean Peninsula could be taken to a broader level, and that “the divided world be reconciled into one humanity and one global culture of peace.”

In addition to calling for peace, the leaders expressed deep condolences for the loss of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. UPF offered a video and floral tribute.

“My grandfather said the one thing people cannot go without is peace,” said Sheikh Mansour Diouf of the Murid Brotherhood in Senegal. “We are supposed to be brothers…” This sentiment was echoed by many of the religious leaders.

Korean reconciliation was a major theme, due to the passion of UPF co-founders, Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, who were born in what is now North Korea. In 1991, anti-communist Rev. Moon went to Pyongyang to meet communist North Korea leader Kim Il-sung. The two men embraced as brothers and agreed to launch various projects together. That unity underscores the hope to bring peace to the 80 million people on the Korean Peninsula, despite decades of division, said Dr. Michael Jenkins, President, UPF International.

Along with the conference, UPF organized a Fact-Finding Delegation for Peace on the Korean Peninsula with US officials and South Korean leaders. Amb. Joseph DeTrani, Special Envoy to the Six-Party Talks with DPRK (2003-2006); Amb. Harry Harris, a US Navy admiral who served as US Ambassador to South Korea from 2018 to 2021; (Ret.) Gen. Walter Sharp, who led US forces, the UN Command, and ROK-US Combined Forces Command (2008-2011); and Dr. Alexandre Mansourov, Adjunct Professor at the Edmund Walsh School of Foreign Studies at Georgetown University, offered their assessments. (Full details will be available at UPF.org).

“Idealism must be rooted in realism,” said Amb. Harris. He praised South Korea President Suk-yeol Yoon for his intentions “to make the US-ROK Alliance the centerpiece of his foreign policy,” as that means outreach to Japan as well as military readiness.

Former US President Donald Trump, former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Cambodia Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen, Dr. Sok Siphana, head of Asian Vision Institute, and former Taiwan Vice President Lu Hsiu-lien offered remarks on the need to achieve peace.

Protecting religious freedom worldwide was another major theme. Religious freedom is “the most important single topic on the planet,” said US House Speaker Newt Gingrich (1995-1999). That is because it presupposes God’s existence and God’s bestowing rights to humanity, and this forms the basis of freedom, he explained.

Religious freedom is key to security concerns, added US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (2018-2021), recalling that he always left his Bible open on his desk for inspiration. “Nations that threaten others, like China and Iran” also “have death holds” on religious freedoms, he noted.

From Japan, lawyer Norishige Kondo of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU) talked about “a serious crisis of religious freedom in our country.” He spoke of the surreal situation of Japan’s media transferring blame for the brutal assassination of Prime Minister Abe from the shooter to FFWPU. He discussed human rights violations against 4,300 FFWPU members, while FFWPU member Toru Goto talked about his kidnapping, 12-year confinement, and lawsuits against perpetrators.

Hon. Jan Figel, Special Envoy for the Promotion of Freedom of Religion, European Union (2016-2019), noted that while 84% of the world population claims religious affiliation, 79% live in countries “with high or very high obstacles to religious freedom.” Religious prejudice generates three evils—”intolerance, discrimination, and persecution,” said Dr. Massimo Introvigne, Managing Director of the Center for Studies on New Religions in Italy.

A third major highlight was about strengthening peace and prosperity in Africa

The growing power of Africa—where the average age is 20—brings opportunities for education, jobs, encouraging peace, and protecting the environment, especially desertification. “It is imperative for us: We must train our youth so that they can resolutely take charge of their destiny,” said H.E. Brigi Rafini, Executive Secretary of the Community of Sahel and Saharan States (CEN-SAD) and former Prime Minister of Niger.

At an afternoon International Youth Leaders Conference, leaders from Malawi, Nigeria, Eswatini, Cape Verde, Somalia, DR Congo, and Niger discussed the importance of vocational training and character education for African youth. This was followed by the signing of an agreement to raise “youth for peace.”

In a separate session, Imboni Dr. Uzwi-Lezwe Radebe, founder of the Revelation Spiritual Home in South Africa, joined Most Rev. Daniel Okoh, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria; Hon. Issaka Sourwema, Minister of Religious and Customary Affairs of Burkina Faso; H.E. Rev. Nevers Mumba, Founder of the National Christian Coalition in Zambia; and Dr. Nokuzola Mndende, National Chairperson of the Council of African Religion in South Africa, to discuss a resolution to protect religious freedom in Africa. This resolution was subsequently signed.

Education sector should produce HR equipped with practical skills: B20

The education format that produced practical skills for the community was needed to empower the people in the midst of the industrial dynamics, Chair of B20 Indonesia Shinta Kamdani stated.

Kamdani made the statement during a webinar titled “The Future of Work and Education Task Force (FOWE TF),” as a B20 side activity related to education and future job opportunities that was held in a hybrid format in Yogyakarta, Monday.

“Qualified human resources (HR), especially in the field of education, can only be obtained through careful planning. HR in this sector will play an important role in the future,” Kamdani noted in an official statement here, Monday.

B20 is the official dialogue forum for the global business community for providing practical policy recommendations from a business viewpoint to the G20.

She later noted that FOWE TF had formulated three policy recommendations for the G20 Summit and is expected to be implemented by all countries in responding to the current challenges.

The recommendations are the creation of sustainable jobs, education, and skills in accordance with the productivity of the world of work and involvement and inclusion.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) Arsjad Rasjid emphasized the need for national entrepreneurs to play an active role in providing educators and infrastructure that met the work competency standards. He expressed optimism that the education sector would be able to produce a workforce that was best aligned to the requirements of the business world.

Moreover, the government, through Presidential Regulation Number 68 of 2022 concerning the Revitalization of Vocational Education and Vocational Training, encourages the involvement of the business world, including KADIN, along with related ministries and institutions to harmonize vocational education and training.

“As an organization, KADIN is involved in making improvements in vocational education, including aligning vocational education and training to fulfill the needs of qualified workforce with the competencies needed by the business world in an effort to reduce unemployment,” Rasjid remarked.

He said that Indonesian workers should be able to adapt to the industrial revolution 4.0. Moreover, only 20 percent of the Indonesian companies had embraced digitalization, while in other countries, such as Singapore, Korea, and China, the figure had reached 40 percent.

Hence, Indonesian human resources must increase their capabilities by reskilling or upskilling to compete in the digital era.

“KADIN and FOWE Task Force B20 are willing to close the gap in access to education, especially for women, by supporting government policies that encourage the education and vocational training system along with the industry’s involvement to prepare the young generation and excellent Indonesian workers,” he concluded.

Riau Police seizes 101,355 ecstasy pills smuggled from Malaysia

The Riau Police arrested two people and seized a total of 101,355 ecstasy pills smuggled from Malaysia through a small harbor in Riau Province in early August.

Drug traffickers had smuggled illicit drugs to Riau by using the various river lines in the province, West Jakarta Police Head Senior Commissioner Pasma Royce told the press here on Monday.

The ecstasy pills were confiscated in Riau following a tip-off from Jakarta’s ecstasy user, who had been earlier arrested by the West Jakarta Police.

The Riau Police later arrested M, 31, and S, 40, at separate locations and retrieved a total of 101,355 ecstasy pills from them.

They planned to carry the ecstasy pills packed in 22 plastic pouches to Jakarta.

“We also seized crystal methamphetamine weighing some 72.86 grams in a plastic and ready to be distributed and also 46.35 grams of hashish in a plastic,” Royce remarked.

The two men were later brought to Jakarta for further investigation at the West Jakarta Police’s Office.

They admitted to have been acting as illicit drug couriers on five instances and were paid Rp3 million per pouch.

The police continued the investigation to catch the main perpetrators, who smuggled the illicit drugs from Malaysia into Riau Province.

The drugs were probably distributed in night clubs in Jakarta, the police said.

Jokowi inaugurates Flag-Raising Troop for Independence Day ceremony

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Monday inaugurated the complete formation of the Flag-Raising Troop (Paskibraka) for the flag-raising and flag-lowering ceremonies at the Presidential Palace on August 17, 2022.

The Flag-Raising Troop comprises 68 male and female high school students from Indonesian provinces, who were selected through a strict and rigorous process.

“By asking the blessing from the Almighty God, today, I officiate all of you as the Flag-Raising Troop that will perform the duty at the Merdeka Palace on August 17, 2022. May the Almighty God bless you,” Widodo said during the Flag-Raising Troop’s inauguration ceremony, as observed on the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel on Monday.

During the ceremony, head of the Pancasila Ideology Education Agency (BPIP), Yudian Wahyudi, read the Paskibraka oath, with all inducted personnel repeating the oath.

According to Presidential Regulation No. 13 of 2021 on nurturing Pancasila ideology in the young generation through the flag-raising troop education program, the young Paskibraka personnel will receive Pancasila ideology education from BPIP.

After the inauguration ceremony, the President and Vice President Ma’ruf Amin greeted all personnel of the Paskibraka.

During the ceremony, the Presidential Palace will impose strict health protocols

Striving to preserve wayang kulit puppet-making in Cirebon

Sawiyah’s love for wayang kulit (traditional shadow puppetry) is evident from the fact that he has been making the puppets used in it since 1965.

Making wayang kulit puppets has been the 73-year-old’s source of income for 53 years.

The craftsman lives in Gegesik Kulon Tourism Village, Cirebon district, West Java, in a very simple house dominated by wooden furniture.

Interestingly, the terrace of the house is used as a workshop for making wayang kulit puppets, right from the stage of carving to coloring.

To make the puppets, Sawiyah uses the skin of female buffaloes from Sukoharjo, East Java, because it is more malleable compared to the skin of male buffaloes, which is thicker and cracks easily.

Puppets made from female buffalo skin can last for hundreds of years, he said.

The making of wayang kulit puppets

According to Sawiyah, after he buys the buffalo skins, they are first dried before being carved.

He said that each wayang has a standard size. For Cirebonese wayang kulit, the puppets are of three types in terms of size, namely Kidang Kencana (small size), Asmara Wulan (medium size), and Mega Mendung (large size).

Asmara Wulan puppets are more commonly used for shows, he added.

Sawiyah chooses to use his own powder paint to color the puppets.

For some colors, acrylic paint is usually used, even though the quality is not really good and the color fades quickly.

In addition, he also uses high-quality wall paint to maintain the color as it is water-resistant and durable even though the price is relatively high.

Normally, Sawiyah mixes several colors into five color gradations. Then, to measure the thickness of the shadow puppets, they are usually tanned.

According to him, the skin from one buffalo can approximately be used to make about 10–15 small puppets.

Sawiyah said that there is a difference between puppets that are designed to be displayed at home and those used in performances. Puppets that are meant for display are more artistic than those that are used for wayang kulit shows, he explained.

He said that his income is uncertain because making wayang takes a long time: around 20 days to a month, depending on the complexity of the design.

Although the price of the wayang kulit puppets is quite high, he revealed that his income only reaches Rp75 thousand per day.

Most of his puppet buyers are collectors of wayang souvenirs from Pedalangan, Central Java.

In addition, there are also a number of officials who come to his house to see the making of wayang kulit puppets—one of them was Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno.

Sawiyah said the cheapest wayang kulit he made sold for Rp500 thousand, namely the Punakawan model.

Recognized craftsman

According to Sawiyah, the local office has only recognized two wayang kulit puppet craftspersons, including him.

He expressed regret over the low interest among young people in becoming wayang kulit puppet craftspersons.

Nevertheless, he said that he will continue to share his knowledge of puppet making for free with young people around him.

He further said that those who want to learn usually visit his home to directly observe the process of making puppets and try to make puppets on their own in their homes later.

He informed that researchers from Banyumas had met him and said that the quality of the wayang kulit puppets in Cirebon was good enough to be marketed.

Sawiyah said that the micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) guidance program provided by the government has helped him, but he said that currently, the raw materials for wayang kulit are hard to find.

“But I love wayang. Even though I’m 73 years old, I’m still active. It’s a shame now that my eye health is disturbed because I’m already 73,” he remarked.

Sawiyah said that to buy puppets, his buyers directly visit his home.

The government in his area has not provided maximal guidance because there has been no continuation of the coaching that had previously been carried out, he added.

To this end, he said he hoped that the government would develop a studio for making wayang kulit puppets so that his knowledge can continue to be passed on.

Need for regeneration

Head of the tourism and creative economy sub-department of South Jakarta, Rus Suharto, who earlier visited Cirebon district on August 4–5, 2022, for a Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) event, said that the regeneration of wayang kulit puppet craftspersons is needed by carrying out training to pass on knowledge of the craft.

He expressed the hope that the government would provide funds so that wayang kulit can continue to be developed and passed on.

“If there is no regeneration, additional government facilitation is needed through wayang (puppet) making competitions and wayang show competitions,” he said.

According to Suharto, if combined with a culture-based creative economy, tourist attractions will create a unique identity that can attract tourists.

In addition, public infrastructures should also be complemented by a creative economy in the aspects of aesthetics, beauty, comfort, security, and memories.

He noted that his suggestions could also be used as a reference for post-pandemic national economic recovery.

“For the acceleration of economic recovery, reduce benchmarking abroad because unique local wisdom exists in Indonesia,” he remarked.

Meeting President will bolster U-16 national team’s spirit: minister

Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali has expressed the hope that meeting President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will bolster the spirit of the U-16 national football team that recently won the AFF U-16 Championship.

The meeting with Widodo is intended to fulfill their aspirations, and will probably take place after the Independence Day ceremony at Merdeka Palace here on August 17, 2022, he informed.

“I hope their spirit will be bolstered after meeting the President on August 17,” Amali said after attending the inauguration ceremony of the Flag-Raising Troop (Paskibraka) for the Independence Day ceremony at the Presidential Palace complex here on Monday.

The minister also lauded the U-16 national team’s captain, Muhammad Iqbal Gwijangge, and his teammates for winning the championship.

“They are our hope for the future. They are amazing; their persistence, togetherness, and techniques are all apparent,” Amali remarked.

He said that the U-16 national football team must not be given overly high targets as they need to first develop further before achieving more in the future.

“We hope their (performance) will be maintained and (they will) not (be) distracted by various matters, causing a decline in their achievements,” the minister said

After the AFF Championship, the U-16 national football team will next fight to secure a place in the final of the AFC U-17 Asian Cup in 2023.

Gwijangge and his teammates will compete in Group B in the U-17 Asian Cup qualification stage against Guam, Malaysia, Palestine, and the United Arab Emirates next October.

The U-16 national football team emerged victorious at the AFF U-16 Championship after defeating the Vietnamese team in the finals by 1-0 on August 12.

With this year’s win, Indonesia has so far bagged two AFF U-16 Cup titles. It won the 2018 edition of the championship.
