Govt strengthens HIV screening to prevent mother-to-child transmission

The Ministry of Health is continuously strengthening the screening of pregnant women to prevent mother-to-child (vertical) transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus or HIV.

“If (infected) at a young age, during childhood, it means mother-to-child vertical transmission still occurs,” director general of disease prevention and handling at the ministry Maxi Rein Rondonuwu said at a World AIDS Day commemoration event on Thursday.

According to him, most HIV infections in children are acquired from parents.

Based on the ministry’s data, 60 percent of HIV-infected patients are people in the productive age group, namely, 19 to 49 years.

Therefore, screening pregnant women is essential. The government is promoting screening for HIV along with hepatitis and syphilis.

According to Rondonuwu, through early screening, pregnant women infected with HIV can immediately get antiretroviral therapy (ART) to prevent transmission of the infection to their child.

The strengthening of screening must be balanced with the strengthening of reproductive health education among families. The Ministry of Health has asked the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology to assist in efforts to strengthen reproductive health education, especially among teenagers in schools.

The education covers the dangers of free love, the use of condoms for protection, as well as the characteristics and symptoms of HIV/AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).

Religious leaders and community networks can also play an important role in encouraging people to reject free love.

These efforts are aimed at increasing public awareness, especially to prevent the stopping of treatment of mothers due to several reasons, for example, long distance and lack of approval from their partner.

“Do not forget that we are also uniting the HIV/AIDS screening program with tuberculosis (screening). Almost all those with AIDS also get tuberculosis. We really have to unite these two,” he said.

VP Amin attends Christmas celebration in Papua

Vice President Ma’ruf Amin on Thursday attended a Christmas celebration in Biak city, Biak Numfor District, Papua, with district government officials, Indonesian Military and National Police personnel, and the community.

“Today, December 1, 2022, from the Cenderawasih Square, I wish all Christians in Papua and all parts of the country a Merry Christmas,” Amin remarked.

Christmas is a moment for joy as well as a moment to spread love, hope, and peace, he said.

“I highly appreciate the Papuan people. The teaching, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself,’ makes the value of love able to cross the boundaries of differences,” he added.

The Land of Papua, according to him, is the face of a “mini Indonesia” that embraces the idea of pluralism. He said the region is the most tolerant area according to a Religious Affairs Ministry release.

“Let us maintain harmony, tolerance, and caring as a manifestation of our awareness and joint efforts to mutually respect each other. From Biak Island, spread love, brotherhood, unity, and a message of peace for Indonesia,” he said.

VP Amin also invited the public and related officials to participate in national and regional development honestly and sincerely, as sought by Dominee (pastor) Izaac Samuel Kijne.

Pastor Kijne was a missionary from the Netherlands who became a school principal in Manokwari, West Papua, in 1923. Kijne sought to improve Papuans’ quality of education and life.

“Once again, from the ‘Lips of the Pacific Ocean,’ I wish all Christians a Merry Christmas 2022,” the Vice President remarked.

Meanwhile, Biak Numfor district head Herry Ario Naap sought Amin’s support for making Saereri, a region where many indigenous tribes live, the venue for the Sail Teluk Cenderawasih (STC) event in 2023. The STC event aims to accelerate Papua’s development and cooperation among indigenous territories.

Expect education sector will help achieve climate mitigation targets

Deputy Minister of Environment and Forestry Alue Dohong has expressed the hope that the education sector will make a significant contribution to Indonesia’s efforts to achieve its climate change mitigation targets.

“Because the younger generation is an important stakeholder to oversee the achievement of climate change policy implementation in Indonesia,” he said at the Environment and Forestry Ministry’s (KLHK’s) headquarters here on Thursday.

He made the statement during the awarding ceremony for the 2022 Independent and National Adiwiyata – or Green School – Awards.

The awards were given to schools considered to have shown a strong commitment to and succeeded in implementing environmental education programs in their surroundings.

The deputy minister lauded the role of teachers and students who contributed to the improvement of environmental quality for years.

Furthermore, he urged schools to bolster the implementation of environmentally friendly practices, including waste management, energy and water conservation, tree planting and nurturing, as well as maintaining clean sanitation and drainage.

“KLHK also supports various innovations regarding environmentally friendly behaviors and environmental learnings,” he said.

On the same occasion, director general of early childhood education, basic education, and secondary education at the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry, Iwan Syahril, also lauded schools for their role in the environmental protection movement.

He asked the schools which received the awards to encourage other schools to implement environmental conservation education.

“As, according to the principles of the Adiwiyata award (which are educative, participative, and sustainable), the entire educational ecosystem in Indonesia is invited to care more and be more responsible in preserving the environment,” the director general added.

At least 789 schools from 27 provinces were assessed for the 2022 Independent and National Adiwiyata Awards.

After the evaluation, the KLHK handed over the 2022 Independent Adiwiyata Awards to 94 schools from 17 provinces.

Meanwhile, the 2022 National Adiwiyata Awards were given to 305 schools from 24 provinces.

Supplements cannot replace immunization: Indonesian Pediatric Society

Supplements cannot replace immunization in preventing the transmission of infectious diseases such as measles, polio, diphtheria, and pertussis, according to a member of the immunization task force of the Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI) Soedjatmiko.

“Supplements need to be given, but they cannot replace the function of immunization, no matter what the supplement is, including breast milk,” he stressed at a health discussion, which was followed from here on Thursday.

According to Soedjatmiko, immunization stimulates the formation of specific immunity. For example, the measles vaccine stimulates immunity so that the body is ready to face the measles virus.

He further explained that if the measles virus attacks a child who has been immunized against measles, the child will be better protected because their body will already have antibodies against the virus.

Meanwhile, supplements, food, and exclusive breastfeeding cannot produce specific antibodies. Therefore, they can only speed up the recovery process when a child has an illness but cannot serve as a substitute for immunization.

“Indeed, they are beneficial. When (children are) sick, they can accelerate recovery. Yet, they cannot replace (immunization). There are no specific antibodies in breast milk, only general antibodies,” he explained.

According to him, countries with good nutritional levels, which promote exclusive breastfeeding, still provide immunization to their people.

Therefore, he advised parents to complete their children’s immunization schedules in accordance with the direction of the Ministry of Health.

In addition, he highlighted that parents must ensure the implementation of a clean and healthy lifestyle because most infectious diseases infect people through the nose and mouth.

“By washing hands, we can prevent it (transmission). However, what is most important is immunization,” he noted.

“Therefore, let us complete the immunization of our children and grandchildren, our nephews, because the most effective prevention, so far, (based on) research in all countries, is immunization,” he added.

Ministry preparing strategy for workers affected by start-up lay-offs

The Ministry of Communication and Information is currently developing a strategy to help superior digital talents impacted by start-up lay-offs.

“Workers affected by start-up lay-offs are superior digital talents (and) are expected to be absorbed by other industries that wish to carry out digital transformation,” the ministry’s director general of informatics applications Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan said after the Kominfo V Digital Economic Forum in Jakarta on Thursday.

A number of digital start-up companies in Indonesia are implementing efficiencies, including by laying off employees, he noted.

Based on the forum, the ministry is planning to develop a digital talent database for workers affected by start-up lay-offs. The database will be shared with other institutions that need digital talents.

This method is expected to serve as a bridge between digital talents and other companies or institutions that are carrying out digital transformation, Pangerapan remarked.

“We hope the digital talents can also be absorbed by other industries or the government,” he said.

He then outlined several reasons why digital start-ups conduct lay-offs. Pangerapan noted that it may not be due to a decline in business but a matter of rationalization.

For example, there are two start-ups that recently merged and decided to cut some of their employees. Other start-ups may lay off workers because of a change in activity from online to offline work.

“As I see it, this is still in the rationalization stage,” he noted.

Pangerapan said that start-up companies, including in Indonesia, have a tendency to hire digital talent before they need their skills because the number of digital talents in the job market is limited.

When current conditions force companies to tighten the economy, start-ups must release digital talent in areas that are no longer needed by the companies. The rationalization carried out by start-ups is expected to make the companies operate positively and sustainably, he added.

66.86 million Indonesians have received first booster: task force

At least 66.86 million Indonesians have received the third dose or first booster of the COVID-19 vaccine as of Thursday, according to the COVID-19 Handling Task Force.

As per the task force’s data, the number of first booster recipients grew by 237,450 on Thursday, taking the total tally to 66,862,019.

Meanwhile, the number of second dose recipients rose by 119,410 to 174,239,124, and the number of first dose recipients was recorded at 203,715,848.

Then, the number of fourth dose or second booster recipients–mainly health workers—increased by 68,288 to 863,582 on Thursday.

As part of efforts to boost community immunity against COVID-19, the Indonesian government launched a nationwide vaccination program on January 13, 2021. President Joko Widodo was the first vaccine recipient under the program.

The government is targeting to vaccinate as many as 234,666,020 people against the virus.

According to the Ministry of Health, the government is currently focusing on increasing the coverage of the first booster dose vaccination, which is currently still low.

“Of course, there is a plan to give the second booster to the general public, but right now, we are focusing on expediting the (administration of the) first booster,” the ministry’s director general of disease prevention and control Maxi Rein Rondonuwu informed.

Regarding the plan for providing a second booster to the general public, Rondonuwu said that all parties must first focus on increasing the coverage of the first booster, which, so far, has reached 38 percent while the target is 50 percent at least.

Nevertheless, the government has discussed the provision of the second booster to the general public after the second booster vaccination for the elderly group is completed, he added.

Currently, the government is trying to expedite the administration of the first booster by mapping areas where vaccination coverage is still low and distributing vaccines with the help of the National Police (Polri) and the Indonesian Military (TNI), he said.
