Prices of basic necessities in Surabaya stable: Trade Minister

Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan has said prices of basic necessities in a number of traditional markets in Surabaya, East Java Province, are stable.

“Today we are grateful that prices have dropped a lot. First, the ones that cause the highest inflation are chillies and onions,” Minister Hasan said after conducting inspections at Wonokromo and Keputran markets, here on Sunday.

The staple food needs whose prices are stable include chillies and onions, which previously their prices were much higher.

During an inspection in Keputran market, Minister Hasan said that the wholesale price of onions was between Rp25,000 to Rp28,000 per kilogram.

“So traders sell them for under Rp40,000, or Rp35,000 to retailers,” he said.

The price of red chillies in the city was also stable, both cayenne pepper and large red chillies, with an average market price of Rp55,000 per kilogram.

“When I first became a minister, the price of chillies was Rp120,000. However, yesterday the average price of chillies reached Rp55,000, both cayenne pepper, curly chili, green chili, and large red chili. That means that retailers can sell it at a price of Rp65,000 to Rp70,000,” he added,

Meanwhile, the price of meat has also fallen. Previously the price of meat was Rp130,000 to Rp135,000. But, today the price drops to Rp120,000 per kilogram, he said .

“I checked that the price of meat is Rp120,000 (per kilogram). Yesterday, I even found out in Kupang that the price of beef was Rp110,000. It’s cheaper. Here (at Wonokromo market) the price is Rp120,000. Last week the price was still Rp130,000. That means the price has also gone down. Meanwhile, the prices of other staples such as rice and sugar are stable,” he said.

Furthermore, the minister said that the availability and price of cooking oil in Surabaya is also stable. He said the average Highest Retail Price (HET) for packaged cooking oil is Rp14,000.

Minister Hasan reiterated that the prices of basic necessities have started to stabilize. In the previous month, Indonesia experienced high inflation. Hence, with stable prices of basic commodities, the minister hopes that inflation can be controlled soon.

“Stock availability is guaranteed. If the stock is low, the price will be high. If prices tend to fall, it means that there are more stocks,” he said.

Resolving multidimensional global crises

The Civil 20 (C20) members across the world gathered in Jakarta on 27-28 July 2022 to finalize policy priorities and recommendations from C20 to G20 leaders on the current multidimensional global crises.

71 million people have fallen into extreme poverty in the first quarter of 2022, and more than 250 million people are estimated to be in need of humanitarian assistance and protection by the end of the year.

C20 urges that the multidimensional global crises should be tackled faster, fairer and in a sustainable manner.

It is essential that the G20 leaders put people before politics, for economic growth is not a possible thing without actual contribution of the people’s voices, and active participation of all layers of the communities including women and persons with disabilities.

C20 fruitfully discussed potential ideas and recommendations that are not only inclusive but also addressing the entirety of the current political, economic and social turmoil.

“Representing the voices of civil societies, we call on G20 leaders to make a concrete effort to provide and share resources to prevent and respond to the current crises,” Chair of C20 Indonesia Sugeng Bahagijo said.

The G20 should increase the quantity and quality of funding for the global crises and recognize the non-state actors as humanitarian actors.

It is time for the current leadership to move from ‘doing good for ourselves to ‘doing good for others, Sugeng Bahagijo said.

2022 has the most significant amount of people in need of humanitarian aid to date.

The number still increases and it is driven by COVID-19 pandemic, natural disasters, climate crisis, social-economic injustice, social-political conflict, food and energy crisis, inflation, bad governance and others.

Climate change issues have also become one of the biggest triggers of the escalating global humanitarian turmoil as we are likely to fail to meet the Paris Agreement target, which is to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees C or below.

“This has impacted various aspects of our lives, including food and water insecurity which leads to malnutrition and an increased gap in various countries; in addition, the world economy would also become 10%-18% smaller,” Steering Committee of C20 Indonesia Binny Buchori said.

The food crisis which worsens the current humanitarian crisis is also triggered by spiking inflation and market speculation that has caused a significant increase in food prices.

According to the latest World Bank report, more than 80 per cent of Low-Income Countries (LICs) and Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) have seen inflation levels above 5 percent.

While the G20 agenda to achieve the SDGs requires an inclusive global system that promotes economic growth and job market, financial institutions such as banks, hedge funds and traders are stealing the opportunity to squeeze the benefit of the deregulation of the global food markets which negatively affect the wealth of the low-income community.

Economic and social policies during this multidimensional crisis should be centred on people, with holistic social protection packages, universal healthcare, and basic services made available across borders to reach the most vulnerable.

“We are witnessing immense suffering of the people day by day because of the prolonged pandemic, global economic and humanitarian crisis.

While the C20 acknowledges G20’s effort in establishing the proposed Financial Intermediary Fund (FIF) for Pandemic Preparedness, Prevention, and Response (PPR) as a way to escape the crises, it is important for the G20 to ensure the FIF’s transparency, inclusivity, and accessibility of developing countries and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and more importantly, to ensure that this not just a new debt.” Nadia Daar of Oxfam International said.

The recent G20 Finance Track’s meeting in July has failed to find common ground on the Ukraine-Russia war, and G20 must realize that the inability and unwillingness of its members to address the issue will create not only a more devastating cost to human lives but also severe economic consequences and a step back in ending poverty.

Responding to the intriguing global crisis data presented by the civil society, Indonesia as the current president of G20 is proposing a strategy to strengthen the recovery and resilience required to withstand future crises in the developing countries, including the last-developed countries and small island developing states.

According to Wempi Saputra, Finance Deputy of G20, solving the global crises in terms of food crises, energy crises and financial crises needs strong collaboration and participation of all stakeholders including civil society organizations, and this needs to be done through collective action.

Saputra also stated his support for the Civil Society Organizations to be provided more spaces of dialogue and conversation with G20 leaders.

Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs Ministry of National Development Planning of the Republic of Indonesia, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, who is also part of the G20 Development Working Group, also attended and echoed the importance of strong collaboration and participation of civil society organizations in G20 dialogues.

In these times of multiple crises, it is more important than ever for the G20 to commit to inclusive, transparent and democratic global economic governance, and reach out to the most vulnerable communities, .” Tove Maria Ryding from the European Network on Debt and Development (EURODAD) said.

Decisions on global issues should be made in a forum where all countries can participate on an equal footing, and that forum is the United Nations

With the last remaining quarter before the G20 Leaders summit in November is held, the C20 strongly encourages G20 Leaders to intensify dialogues and engage with Civil Society Organizations to produce a concrete-deliverable and strong-commitment which address and provides more ambitious solutions to the current multidimensional crisis affecting people on a day-to-day basis, C20 Sherpa Ah Maftuchan said.

Ministry opens communication with blocked online platforms

The Ministry of Communication and Informatics said that the ministry has opened communication with operators of online platforms blocked due to non-compliance to electronic system provider (PSE) registration requirements.

“Opportunities are always open for anyone wanting to be part of Indonesia’s digital ecosystem, either domestic or foreign (platforms),” the ministry’s Director General of Informatics Applications Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan stated in a virtual press conference, Sunday.

He pointed out that operators of online game platforms Steam, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike Global Offensive — blocked since July 29 — are the three platforms that have engaged in communication with the ministry.

The three platforms have begun their registration process as foreign PSEs in Indonesia, the official noted.

“Hopefully they could fulfil (the service requirement) soon, and residents who use their service can again access the service,” Pangerapan said.

The official stated that online game platforms Epic Games and Origin, as well as Yahoo also blocked due to non-compliance to PSE registration requirement — are yet to communicate with the ministry.

“We still open the opportunity to welcome them to be a part of our digital ecosystem,” he said.

Pangerapan then confirmed that the authority has temporarily unblocked the online payment platform PayPal to respond to the grievances of residents who could not access their money from the platform.

The platform will be unblocked until August 5 at 11:59 p.m. local time (UTC +7), he said, while suggesting residents utilise the opportunity to withdraw their funds from PayPal to other financial platforms.

Moreover, he clarified that the online advertising and analytics platform Xandr could be unblocked as the platform is not among the platform required to register.

As of today, the ministry has still blocked six electronic service providers of Yahoo Search, Steam, Dota 2, Counter-Strike Global Offensive, Epic Games, and Origin due to non-compliance with the ministerial regulation.

Per July 31, some 9,039 online platforms registered by 5,453 electronic service providers have been registered in the ministry’s system.

APG proves President’s commitment to athletes with disabilities: Amali

The 2022 ASEAN Para Games (APG) being held in Surakarta, Central Java Province, demonstrates President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi’s) commitment to athletes with disabilities, Minister of Youth and Sports Zainudin Amali has said.

He said that athletes with disabilities have awaited the games for long since the regional sports event had been delayed for four years.

“We are not the initial host; it was Vietnam. But then, because no other countries expressed their interest to host the games, President Joko Widodo instructed us to offer ourselves as the host,” Amali stated in his statement here, Sunday.

The minister said that the president’s instruction to volunteer as the host of the ASEAN Para Games is due to his mindfulness of the games that can be a platform for athletes with disabilities to compete and make achievements.

The cancellation of the 2020 ASEAN Para Games in the Philippines, the delay of the next Asian Games in Guangzhou until 2023, as well as the limited number of single-event championships reduced the platform that athletes with disabilities can use to showcase their abilities, he added.

“Hence, President Joko Widodo instructed me to provide them a platform to compete. If we are not the host of the game’s current edition, perhaps, the game would not be organized again,” Amali expounded.

The minister expressed gratitude for collaborations conceived among the central government and ministries, Central Java provincial authority, Surakarta municipal authority, and other stakeholders that made the game preparations smooth.

“Moreover, we mobilise all of our potentials in a very short time,” he emphasised.

He also expressed his optimism that Indonesia will achieve success in various sectors, such as sports achievements, administration, and economy, by becoming the host.

“The economic effect is highly positive; flights departing here are all full, and even some (athletes) must use land transportation (to come here). Hotels, car rent, transportation, and culinary business are all thriving. I have observed the economic effect of the event,” Amali stated.
