Eid al-Adha celebration little bit different due to FMD: Police Chief

The National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, said the celebration of Eid al-Adha 1443 Hijriah/2022 AD was slightly different from the previous years due to Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in livestock.

“This year’s Eid al-Adha is quite different. Besides facing the new COVID-19 subvariants, BA.4 and BA.5, we must also follow related regulations in organizing or slaughtering these sacrificial animals to prevent the spread of FMD outbreaks,” Prabowo noted in his remarks at the Bhayangkara Field of the Police Headquarters, Jakarta, Sunday.

He explained that the FMD outbreak forced the process of slaughtering animals to follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs) to prevent the spread of the disease outbreak.

“It must be carried out in accordance with the SOP related to the slaughter of sacrificial animals. This is the most important thing,” he reminded.

Based on previous reports, the Spokesperson for the Task Force for FMD Handling, Professor Wiku Adisasmito, said that animals detected by FMD in the green zone must be destroyed and then buried.

Then, in the yellow zone, livestock transmitted with FMD must be conditionally slaughtered at the Slaughterhouse (RPH). Especially the head, offal, skin, and feet must be buried, he said.

Meanwhile, FMD-positive animals in the red zone must be isolated by considering the condition of the animals or conditional slaughter at the RPH. The head, offal, skin, and feet must also be buried.

On the other hand, the Chairman of the Indonesian Veterinary Association (PDHI) in Central Kalimantan Province, Eko Hari Yuwono, said that the meat of animals infected with FMD was still safe for consumption if processed properly.

“This FMD, apart from cows, can also be transmitted to other animals such as goats, pigs, and other split-hoofed animals. However, this virus does not infect humans or is a zoonosis,” he informed.

Ministry mobilizes all resources to realize bulk cooking oil program

The Ministry of Trade would continue to mobilize all resources to realize the government’s program on bulk cooking oil.

Deputy Minister of Trade Jerry Sambuaga said that besides managing the supply chain, the Ministry also maintained good communication and coordination with all stakeholders, especially cooking oil producers and distributors.

“We must mobilize all resources to be able to evenly distribute cooking oil for all people,” Sambuaga stated in a written statement received here, Sunday.

Cooking oil has been under the spotlight in the past few months due to rising prices at the international level, thereby affecting prices and supply chains in the country.

To deal with the problem, the government issued various policies. Slowly, the price and supply of bulk cooking oil were running smoothly in accordance with government regulations.

Sambuaga said he along with Minister of Trade, Zulkifli Hasan, would continue to ensure that the price of cooking oil is in keeping with government regulations.

“Minister Hasan wants to immediately reach the target of bulk cooking oil in all regions in Indonesia reaching the highest retail price (HET) that has been set, which is Rp14,000. Of course, the Trade Ministry will fully support the steps to realize the target immediately,” he said.

Previously, during a recent visit to Bulu Market, Semarang City, Central Java, Sambuaga talked to a trader saying that the price of cooking oil was already in accordance with government regulations and even tends to be cheaper with a smooth supply.

The trader showed the price of bulk cooking oil was already sold for Rp15,000 per kilogram or Rp14,000 per liter.

Meanwhile, on a separate occasion, Minister Hasan emphasized the need for continuous communication and coordination between related stakeholders to help all Indonesians have easy access to buy cooking oil with price in accordance with the government regulation.

Indonesia offers proposals to face global challenge in Sherpa meeting

Indonesia offered three proposals to find solutions in facing multidimensional global challenges at the Second Sherpa Meeting of the G20 Indonesia Presidency, .

“Our job in Sherpa track is to maintain a conducive working relationship. This is an important element in turning complex technical and policy advice into bold and ambitious actions for our Head of State,” Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto said in his address to the opening of the Second Sherpa Meeting in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Sunday, virtually.

G20 Sherpa Meeting is a forum attended by G20 member countries to discuss issues related to energy, development, tourism, digital economy, education, labor, agriculture, trade, investment, industry, health, anti-corruption, environment, and climate change.

He outlined the three proposals were first, trust and mutual respect among G20 members as the key to develop dialogue and consensus.

Second, the G20 countries must look forward to delivering global economic growth and resilience, while at the same time trying to find solutions to address challenges.

With good intentions and strong determination, the G20 will advance the priorities of the Indonesian Presidency and also overcome emerging crises.

Third, the 2030 agenda for sustainable development goals (SDG’s) must become the guideline for the G20, especially to improve lives in developing countries that are considered vulnerable.

With the Bali Summit being four months away, Indonesia realizes the current world situation. Therefore, the country calls for unity, especially from the Sherpa to form policy and financial solutions to the global common problems,

In an analogy, the G20 should be an extraordinary restaurant, serving an extraordinary menu, unless the food never came, because the chefs were fighting in the kitchen, Hartarto remarked.

“It is very important in these times of crisis for the G20 to elevate as a major global economic forum. The Indonesian Presidency hopes that the peaceful atmosphere in Labuan Bajo will support the Sherpas to achieve this, the G20 chefs can serve up an extraordinary menu, a menu that can be enjoyed by all over the world,” he continued.

The Second Sherpa meeting in Labuan Bajo was held back-to-back with the G20 Foreign Ministers meeting in Bali which took place on July 7-8, 2022, and the G20 Finance Deputy and Central Bank level meeting on July, 13-14, 2022, in Bali.

The Second Sherpa meeting in Labuan Bajo is held on July 9-13, 2022. Labuan Bajo is chosen as the venue to encourage economic recovery and promote the region as one of the premium tourist destinations for foreign tourists.

Trade Minister asks cooking oil producers to fulfill local demand

Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan has urged cooking oil producers in Lampung province to meet the demand in the local market in order to stabilize the price of the commodity.

“Cooking oil producers or crude palm oil (CPO) factories are required to allocate 20 percent (of their products) for the local market,” he said in South Lampung district on Saturday.

The obligation is aimed at maintaining the stability of cooking oil prices in the domestic market, he explained.

“Any (cooking oil) producer in Lampung must participate in meeting (the demand in) the local market through bulk cooking oil and packaged bulk cooking oil, Minyakita, for remote areas,” he said.

By doing so, public demand for cooking oil can be met, he added.

“The bulk cooking oil includes packaged Minyakita, which is safe for consumption since its vitamin content is still maintained. We will try to meet the demand for such cooking oil at Rp14 thousand per kilogram,” he informed.

The government, through the Trade Ministry, announced earlier that it has prepared export incentives for producers of simple packaged cooking oil of the Minyakita brand.

Blinken lauds Indonesia’s push for concrete outcomes at G20 meetings

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has lauded the Indonesian G20 leadership for trying to secure a concrete outcome at every meeting, including the just-concluded G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (G20 FMM) in Nusa Dua, Bali.

At a press conference in Nusa Dua on Saturday, Blinken said the step aligns with his wish for a concrete outcome at the series of G20 meetings leading up to the G20 Leaders Summit in Nusa Dua on November 15–16, 2022.

“During its G20 leadership, Indonesia has placed crucial and urgent issues to be discussed by influential countries in the global economy. We looked at it together when the Foreign Minister (Retno Marsudi) chaired a discussion and tried to gain concrete results,” he expounded.

According to him, the endeavor has proved that Indonesia has played a crucial role during its G20 presidency.

‘The United States highly appreciates Indonesia’s effort,” he remarked.

Therefore, before concluding his statement at the press conference, Blinken expressed gratitude for Indonesia’s G20 leadership.

He said he believes the series of G20 meetings, including the summit meeting scheduled in November 2022, will provide a concrete result and benefit the global community.

G20 member states need to take steps that would support the settlement of global and economic issues, including the crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the food crisis, the climate crisis, and the food and energy price spike, he added.

Not a single country can solve these problems on its own. Hence, the G20 meetings serve as an appropriate means to sit together to find a good strategy for resolving the issues, he said.

“(G20) represents countries leading the global economy and having resources for which they can do anything to face the global challenge,” he added.

He cited the example of how multilateral cooperation, including among the G20 nations, has helped address the issue of COVID-19 vaccine procurement and distribution.

“Thanks to the G20 member states’ work, we are able to improve access to vaccine products. We can ensure that other countries have foreign exchange reserves and accept debt relief so that the countries can focus on containing the pandemic,” he said.

Baswedan to revoke permit of companies producing excessive pollution

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has threatened to revoke the permits of factories or companies that produce excessive pollution.

“We will revoke their environmental permits if the factories pollute the air in Jakarta,” Baswedan stated after attending the Eid al-Adha prayer at the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS), North Jakarta, Sunday.

He continued that the industrial sector was one of the biggest polluters in Jakarta. Pollution from industrial estates near Jakarta also affected the air quality in the capital city.

“This illustrates that air conditions in an area cannot be separated from other areas because the air and the wind can move from one place to another,” he added.

Therefore, Baswedan added that the Jakarta administration is collaborating with other regional governments to handle excessive pollution from factories.

However, he refused to divulge which industrial estates often affect the capital’s air quality.

“We want everyone to take responsibility because the consequences of the unhealthy air are felt by all, including us in Jakarta,” he reminded.

The governor hopes that with a sense of responsibility for reducing air pollution in the surrounding area, there will be no recriminations between government services/agencies regarding the causes of poor air quality.

Previously, Jakarta’s air quality also occupied the first position in the world with an unhealthy air quality index reaching an index of 188 on June 15.

Deputy Governor of Jakarta Riza Patria at that time stated that the increasing number of vehicles was considered to have triggered the capital’s air quality to deteriorate.

“Indeed, Jakarta was quite congested. When the number of vehicles returned to normal, then there was an increase in pollution,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jakarta Environment Service (DLH) noted that on June 15, low air temperatures and high humidity levels created an accumulation of pollutants, thereby encouraging air pollution in the capital city.

“As a result, air pollutants accumulated in the troposphere,” Public Relations Officer from Jakarta DLH Yogi Ikhwan said.

Religious Affairs Minister lauds health officers’ work in Mina

Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas lauded the work of health officers who provided quick service and assistance to sick Indonesian Hajj pilgrims in Mina during the jumrah procession.

“Their work was extraordinarily helpful for our pilgrims,” Qoumas said in Mina, Sunday.

During his visit to the health service post in Mina, the Hajj Health Center told Qoumas that health workers were one of the keys to the success of Hajj services.

“They were very ready despite many rules that actually hindered the movement of health services, However, our health workers could handle the job. For example, ambulances were not allowed to enter, empty wheelchairs were not allowed to enter but our health workers managed to handle the job,” the Minister stated.

He said that Mina was one of the challenging locations since many pilgrims fell ill due to fatigue which triggered other diseases.

The Head of the Hajj Health Center, Budi Sylvana, said that the jumrah procession was a critical period for Hajj pilgrims since many of them were tired and needed help from health services.

The fatigue factor is believed to be the trigger for comorbidities in elderly pilgrims, especially those who have heart disease.

“From yesterday until today, six of our pilgrims have died due to exhaustion and dehydration, which caused more severe heart disease,” Sylvana noted.

The majority of sick pilgrims who received treatment at the Mina Health Post suffered fatigue and dehydration. Meanwhile, the number of pilgrims being treated is 62.

Previously, the death rate for Indonesian pilgrims was quite high. In the last 15 years, there was almost no significant decrease in the death rate of Indonesian pilgrims. With a quota of around 220 thousand pilgrims, about 300-400 pilgrims die per year, Sylvana informed.

Furthermore, the government targeted the 2022 Hajj pilgrim death rate to fall to one out of every 1,000 pilgrims.

BNPB asks Java’s southern coast to mitigate quake, tsunami’s impact

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has urged policymakers, communities, and all components in Java’s southern coastal areas to mitigate the potential impact of earthquake and tsunami.

“We remind policymakers, communities and all components in each (of the southern coastal) areas to increase preparedness and vigilance to mitigate the potential impact of earthquake and tsunami,” the Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, said in a press statement received here, Sunday.

BNPB hopes that the Earthquake and Tsunami Disaster Resilient Village (Destana) set up in 2019 along the southern coast of Java Island can continue to become a pioneer of community resilience in handling disasters.

This idea follows a series of earthquakes that hit the southern part of Java Island, including an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 in East Java’s southern part on Saturday, July 9, at 03.17 local times.

According to the monitoring results of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake was centered 9.64 degrees southern latitudes and 112.91 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 10 kilometers.

“The Lumajang District Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported to the Center for Control and Operations (Pusdalops) of BNPB, that most of the people in Lumajang District suddenly woke up and fled their homes when the earthquake shook for 2-3 seconds,” Muhari informed.

Less than three hours after the magnitude 5.4 earthquake, BMKG issued another earthquake information at 05.50 local times. The second earthquake of magnitude 5.0 was centered 9.57 degrees southern latitude and 113.93 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 10 kilometers. No shock was felt by the community for the aftershock.

At 09.53 local times, the BMKG seismograph recorded another earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 located at 9.61 degrees southern latitude and 112.91 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 42 kilometers. According to the Lumajang District BPBD, the shocks of the third earthquake were felt for one to two seconds, but did not cause panic among residents.

The results of an interim analysis by BMKG showed that the series of earthquakes were shallow earthquakes due to plate subduction activity. The results of the analysis of the source mechanism showed that the earthquake has a thrust fault mechanism.

Based on BMKG records as of 11.00 local times, there have been 54 aftershocks with the largest magnitude, M 5.0. From the entire incident of the earthquake phenomenon, BMKG ensured that the earthquake did not have the potential for a tsunami.

“The results of monitoring in the field by the Lumajang District BPBD and Malang District BPBD stated that no damage was caused. There were also no reports of casualties,” he confirmed.

Based on the earthquake risk assessment index from InaRisk BNPB, the southern region of Java Island has a moderate to a high level of risk. The southern region of Java Island has also been known to be traversed by the Indo-Australian plate which stretches from the tip of the western part of Sumatra Island to the waters of Southeast Maluku, before finally meeting the Eurasian plate and the Pacific plate.

The earthquake phenomenon may cause several fatalities by the ruins of buildings during strong earthquake shocks. For this reason, strengthening the building structure, especially the pillars of the house and the roof structure, needs to be carried out in stages, both independently and supported by village funds.
