Minister targets Indonesia to become Muslim fashion hub by 2024

Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan expressed optimism of Indonesia’s target of becoming a hub of the world’s Muslim fashion being achieved by 2024 as mandated by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

“We support every effort to enliven Muslim fashion trends and modest fashion. Our goal is clear, which is to make Indonesia the center of the world’s Muslim fashion in 2024,” Hasan stated here, Friday.

The Trade Ministry will support Indonesian Muslim fashion exports through various trade cooperation schemes with partner countries, he remarked.

Hasan made the statement while receiving representatives from the organizers of Indonesia Modest Fashion Week (IMFW).

To this end, the public is invited to increasingly echo Muslim fashion trends in the domestic market to help the Muslim fashion industry and Indonesia’s modest fashion to reach a wider market, Hasan noted.

The minister also supports the implementation of the 2022 IMFW event and will mobilize 46 foreign trade representative offices to promote the event to attract more participants and buyers.

Based on data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), Indonesia is ranked 13th as the Muslim clothing exporter in 2021.

Indonesia’s exports of Muslim clothing in 2021 amounted to US$4.68 billion, an increase of 12.49 percent as compared to only US$4.16 billion in 2020.

Meanwhile, the export value of Muslim clothing during the January-May 2022 period had reached US$2.35 billion, an increase of 41.42 percent as compared to US$1.66 billion recorded during the corresponding period in 2020.

The main export destinations for Indonesian Muslim clothing are the United States, Japan, Germany, Korea, and Canada, Hasan stated.

Moreover, the demand for halal products has continued to rise. By 2024, Muslim fashion is projected to contribute 6.04 percent to the global halal industry, whose value had reached US$311 billion.

“Our domestic Muslim fashion products are of good quality. These products have the potential and are able to compete with Muslim fashion products and modest fashion from other countries,” he concluded.

Netherlands and Indonesia strengthen education, research cooperation

The Netherlands has strengthened bilateral cooperation with Indonesia in the fields of education, research, and science, Dutch Minister of Education, Culture, and Science Robbert Dijkgraaf has said.

“Indonesia has long been a leading strategic partner for the Netherlands in cooperation in the fields of education, research, and science. Clear policies (have emerged) from the government of President Joko Widodo to expand research, improve education, and develop critical knowledge in Indonesia,” Dijkgraaf noted in a statement issued here on Friday.

The Dutch Minister is on a visit to Indonesia from July 20 to July 23, 2022, to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fields of education, research, and science.

The visit is intended to open up new opportunities for cooperation at the government level and among knowledge institutions.

He said that wider, deeper, and mutually beneficial strategic cooperation as equal partners is possible.

“At this moment that coincides with the G20, the Netherlands emphasizes its efforts to engage with Indonesia as the G20 President and fulfill its promise to strengthen its commitment to bilateral and global development after the COVID-19 pandemic,” he explained.

He then emphasized that education and research are the foundation for everyone’s future.

“So, we made it more affordable for people to learn, and we invested a lot in science. Also, we are working on a future where everyone is free to develop their full potential and become who they want to be,” he said.

The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) will seek to further biodiversity research on a molecular level by utilizing an advanced microscopy technique called cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), BRIN’s head, Laksana Tri Handoko, said earlier.

Advancing biodiversity research on a molecular level is quite important for humanity’s future, he remarked at a press conference at BRIN’s office here on Thursday.

Indonesia can learn many things from the Netherlands on the subject since the Netherlands has many experts in that field.

Indonesia will immediately utilize cryo-EM to spur biodiversity research. To improve researchers’ capacity for utilizing cryo-EM, BRIN will involve several experts from the Netherlands, he informed.

“We will have a new instrument that came from a Dutch company, namely cryo-EM, to conduct a much more advanced biodiversity research on the molecular level,” Handoko said.

Former sports minister named suspect in Borobudur tweet case

Police have named former minister Roy Suryo as a suspect for digitally manipulating a photograph of a Buddhist statue at Borobudur Temple to make it resemble President Joko Widodo and posting it on Twitter.

The former youth and sports minister underwent questioning as a suspect in the case on Friday, chief of the public relations division of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Senior Commissioner Endra Zulpan, said here on Friday.

“It is true (he is being) questioned by the Jakarta Metropolitan Police today as a suspect,” he said.

Despite being named a suspect, Suryo has not been detained, he added.

A representative of Buddhists reported Suryo to the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) over a hate speech related to ethnicity, religion, and race (SARA).

The representative also attached a printout of the edited photo from the Twitter account @KRMTRoySUryo2 with the report to Bareskrim.

Suryo reportedly posted the edited photo of the Buddhist statue on June 10, 2022, to protest against the government’s decision to raise entry tickets to Borobudur Temple in Magelang district, Central Java. The government later revoked the decision.

Suryo later withdrew the post, which had sparked a controversy, and apologized to Buddhists.

NFT can be a solution to prevent piracy: Ministry

The Non-Fungible Token (NFT) technology can be a solution to prevent piracy, the Law and Human Rights Ministry’s Intellectual Property Directorate General stated.

This is because the blockchain system enables more secure management and storage of digital identities, the ministry’s official, Anggoro Dasananto, noted through a written statement on Friday.

However, a method should be in place to ensure that the works uploaded within the NFT system are truly those belonging to the people, who uploaded them first, he emphasized.

To this end, the government is holding discussions regarding a regulation that can handle the advancements in technology, especially in the field of intellectual property.

The ministry seeks to ensure that every form of expression, be it music, songs, books, and performance arts, can be well-appreciated by those who enjoy them.

“NFT is a technology that basically brings benefits but also challenges art creators,” Dasananto remarked.

Meanwhile, a painter named Astuti Kusumi noted that advancements in technology had facilitated artwork marketing and business development.

Currently, artists can have broader access to exhibit their works and interact with their audience owing to information technology.

“There is a demand for technology for certain artists. However, traditional artists bear the negative impacts of the existence of technology,” she explained.

She expects the government to provide broader dissemination of information, so that all artists develop a basic understanding of trademark protection.

The goal is to ensure that artists do not experience difficulties when their works are plagiarized or claimed by other people.

Dispute Prevention and Resolution Coordinator at the Directorate General Ahmad Rifaldi noted that the institution has an alternative dispute resolution service for parties involved in intellectual property-related cases.

Copyright owners should conduct mediation first as stipulated within the law. Mediation is one of the alternative dispute resolutions that did not consume much time and was affordable in terms of the cost.

Ministry plans Pancasila tourism trail in Ende district

The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy will introduce a special travel trail tracing the history of the development of the national ideology, Pancasila, in Ende district, East Nusa Tenggara.

“One of the focuses of tourism (here) is to study about the birth of Pancasila and state-based tourism,” Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno informed here on Friday.

The development of integrated tourism and creative economy in Ende district is intended to be a part of Labuan Bajo’s grand travel pattern, Uno said, adding that Ende is not only the gate to Lake Kelimutu but also a historical site of the birth of Pancasila.

On the travel trail, tourists will be introduced to the history of Soekarno’s contemplation of the nation’s foundational principle after independence, which he crystallized in the form of Pancasila.

The ministry is committed to collaborating with other stakeholders to bolster the tourism sector in Ende, particularly by enhancing local tourism villages, Uno said.

The ministry, through the Executive Agency for the Labuan Bajo Flores Authority (BPOLBF), is using two branding concepts to promote Ende as the “home” of the Pancasila and Kelimutu Geopark, he added.

Meanwhile, president director of BPOLBP, Shana Fatina, said that concerning the development of Ende as the “Home of Pancasila,” the authority has planned improvement projects at various historical places relevant to the birth of Pancasila.

The planned project will include the improvement of Bung Karno Contemplation Park, Kota Raja Beach, Bung Karno’s exile home, Soekarno Corner in Ende Cathedral, and other places, which will be part of the Bung Karno historical trail in the region, she informed.

“A special trail on historical and ideological tourism (introducing) our national foundation and pride will be developed,” Fatina said.

The travel trail for Ende district is planned to be a 3-day 2-night tour, she added.

Besides the travel route development, BPOLBP has also implemented various tourism development strategies, which include coordination to synergize the program and residents’ empowerment, the president director said.

The authority is targeting to attract 200 thousand tourists to Ende district annually, she added.

INASPOC ensures Manahan Stadium’s readiness to host the 2022 APG

Chief Executive of the Indonesia National Paralympic Organization Committee (INASPOC), Gibran Rakabuming Raka, confirmed the readiness of the Solo Manahan Stadium for the opening of the 2022 ASEAN Para Games (APG).

During his visit to Manahan Stadium in Solo, Friday, Raka remarked that currently, the workers had started the stage construction work on the north side of the stadium.

“The stage will be on the north side of the stadium. All of the seats have been removed,” he added.

Raka noted that several events at the opening ceremony comprised dance performances and ceremonial events.

“This included welcome speeches, flag hoisting, athlete oaths, and athletes parade,” Raka stated.

However, he affirmed that it was still too soon to give any confirmation on President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi’s) presence at the opening of the 2022 APG.

“We still have not heard information regarding President Jokowi’s presence. I will confirm next week for the VIP guests,” he remarked.

Furthermore, Raka said his side will implement an invitation system for the audience at the opening ceremony.

“Invitations are for the general public and also for sponsors and local officials. The public not receiving the invitation for the opening ceremony could be invited to the closing ceremony. The stadium’s capacity is quite large,” Raka stated.

On the same occasion, APG 2022 Project Director for the Opening and Closing Ceremony (OCC) Debora Sharen stated that preparations for the opening ceremony had commenced since the start of this week.

“Our preparations are already running. The timeline is safe. We will raise and introduce local culture with involvement from many parties,” Sharen noted.

She later remarked that the production process for the preparation is targeted to be completed before July 28, 2022.

“After July 28, we will focus on preparing the opening ceremony show. The main stage will use the entire tribune area. We were urged to make something different from the usual events,” she added.

Indonesia will host the 2022 ASEAN Para Games for the second time starting from July 30 to August 6, 2022.

A total of 11 countries are scheduled to participate in the event, comprising Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Cambodia, Myanmar, Timor-Leste, Brunei, Laos, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

The participants will contest in 14 sports disciplines: athletics, boccia, archery, judo, powerlifting, swimming, table tennis, court tennis, chess, goalball, badminton, cerebral palsy football, basketball, and sitting volleyball.

Tourism Ministry seeks to upskill workers in Labuan Bajo

The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy is conducting programs for improving the skills of tourism human resources to support the Labuan Bajo Super-Priority Tourism Destination (DPSP) in West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

“We are conducting training and mentoring. We are also preparing to establish a tourism polytechnic in collaboration with the West Manggarai district government or other parties,” Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno said here on Friday.

There was a request from the West Manggarai government and the community to set up a tourism polytechnic to develop Labuan Bajo’s human resources, he added.

With the presence of such an educational institution, West Manggarai’s human resources are expected to gain new and better skills.

Uno said he is optimistic that the training program being conducted by the Implementing Agency for the Labuan Bajo Flores Authority (BPOLBF) would improve human resource skills.

Labuan Bajo must have qualified and world-class human resources working in hotels, villas, and pinisi boats to attract more tourists, according to the minister.

Meanwhile, BPOLBF president director Shana Fatina said the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry, through the BPOLBF, is developing a creative ecosystem that includes developing professional human resources in the tourism sector.

The local government is expected to provide a plot of land measuring 20 hectares at the least to build a green campus for the tourism polytechnic, she added.

The number of workers in the tourism and creative economy sector in Labuan Bajo is currently pegged at only 4,500, Fatina noted.

To achieve the target capacity of New Labuan Bajo, which is to serve 20 thousand tourists daily, the number of tourism workers will be increased to 15 thousand.
