Preserve nature starting with simple steps: East Java governor

East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa called on the public to protect the environment, starting with simple steps, such as reducing the use of plastic products, including Styrofoam as well as plastic bottles, bags, and straws.

“These simple actions have a very large impact for the environment and community,” she noted at the Grahadi Building here on Thursday.

Parawansa remarked that the public had become more aware of reducing the use of plastic products, and to this end, some supermarkets were also no longer providing plastic bags for customers and replacing them with cloth bags.

“(After) the plastic (bag) is used, (usually) it is thrown somewhere – (even sometimes) right into the river. Hence, by using cloth bags or other recycled products, the community can help to preserve nature,” she remarked.

The attempt to conserve the environment can also be conducted by implementing a tree planting social movement to reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses that cause global warming.

“Do not litter. Moreover, (do not) throw it into the river,” the governor stated.

Earlier, she received the 2021 Nirwasita Tantra Award from the Environment and Forestry Ministry as she bagged the third place for the best regional head in managing regional environment and forestry.

The Nirwasita Tantra Award is bestowed on regional leaders, who have succeeded in applying green and sustainable policies. The 2021 Nirwasita Tantra award ceremony took place in Jakarta on Wednesday (July 20, 2022).

The 2021 Nirwasita Tantra awardees were divided into three categories of the best regional head, best regional legislative body (DPRD), and best government. Each category was divided into province, large district, medium district, small district, big city, medium city, and small city levels.

The East Java provincial government won the second place for the best provincial government in preserving nature.

“Hopefully, the award would motivate the community to continue to protect and nurture the environment by doing simple actions,” Parawansa stated.

Furthermore, she emphasized that the government of the province would not stop innovating in managing nature and establishing environmental cooperation with various parties.

For over a decade, the regional government had continued to improve the carrying capacity of the environment in the province, she noted.

“The attempt in increasing the carrying capacity of the environment has been made through various collaborations with the central government, district/city governments, business players, universities, communities, non-governmental organizations, as well as other domestic and international stakeholders,” she added.

Participants of the Women 20 (W20) Summit are expected to help promote Samosir Island, particularly Lake Toba in North Sumatra Province, once they return to their respective countries, an official has said.

“Of course, we hope that the W20 participants would help promote the beauty of Lake Toba in their respective countries,” Samosir District Head Vandiko T. Gultom said in Samosir on Thursday.

The presence of foreign delegates at the W20 Summit held in North Sumatra Province from July 19 to 21, 2022, is expected to have a good impact on Samosir tourism, which is ready to receive foreign tourists, he added.

“The visit of the W20 participants to Samosir is a free promotion, and we hope that after this, there will be more visits to Samosir from local and foreign tourists,” he said.

Meanwhile, Director of the Lake Toba Authority Agency Jimmy Panjaitan said that in developing tourism in Samosir District, the agency will promote “go sites”, geosites, and the cultural preservation area.

According to him, foreign tourists are fond of and enjoy outdoor activities.

“Online ticketing will soon be made (available) to support visits to Samosir, so there will be no excuse to say that access to Samosir is difficult. Online tickets will be applied at the Ajibata-Ambarita Crossing,” he added.

The Women 20 (W20) is an official G20 engagement group, which was established during the Turkish presidency in 2015.

National Children’s Day reminder to fulfill children’s rights: BKKBN

The 2022 National Children’s Day is a momentum to fulfill children’s rights in order to build superior human resources (HR) in Indonesia, the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) has emphasized.

“The commemoration of the 2022 National Children’s Day is an important momentum to bring concern and participation from our society and the nation in ensuring the fulfillment of children’s rights,” Deputy for Family Welfare and Family Empowerment at the BKKBN Nopian Andusti said in Jakarta on Thursday.

He then outlined four basic children’s rights—the right to live, the right to grow and develop, the right to be protected, and the right to participate.

As mandated in the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, these rights must be fulfilled by all parties in society to make the nation’s future generation superior, intelligent, healthy, and qualified.

“Children are a gift as well as a mandate from God Almighty, which must be maintained. The role of the family is the main foundation for creating qualified children,” he added.

The development of children’s character and physical appearance must be ensured in the first 1,000 days of life (HPK) as the beginning of human life, Andusti said.

On National Children’s Day on July 23, all parties must participate in guaranteeing and fulfilling children’s rights, in accordance with human dignity, he added.

“The 2022 National Children’s Day is a momentum to strengthen the commitment of the central government, regional governments, partners, and the private sector in realizing superior and qualified human resources by building Indonesia from the family sector,” Andusti remarked.

Indonesia must respect the lives of children since they are the future leaders of the country and they currently account for one-third of the nation’s total population, he added.

He said he hopes that on National Children’s Day, all Indonesian children would enjoy their rights and receive protection from violence and discrimination.

“They make up a third of Indonesia’s population. Not only creating qualified and competitive human resources, protecting and fulfilling children’s rights is an obligation that must be fulfilled by all of us,” he stressed.
