Russian-Ukrainian conflict will affect defense system: Prasetyo

Air Force Chief of Staff Marshal Fadjar Prasetyo has said that the Russia-Ukraine conflict will affect Indonesia’s main weapons system (Alutsista), for which purchases have been made from Russia.

“Of course, this will affect not only equipment from Russia, but the whole world is currently looking at possible changes due to this conflict,” said Prasetyo after the 2022 Indonesian Air Force Leadership Meeting at Cilangkap Headquarters, here on Friday.

He said that currently, Indonesia has quite a lot of defense equipment from Russia.

The Indonesian Air Force has at least 16 Sukhoi Su-27 and Su-30 fighter jets in its fleet, he informed. The Indonesian Army is also operating Mi-35P and Mi-17V helicopters, he said.

However, spare parts for Sukhoi fighter planes purchased from Russia are still guaranteed thanks to a long-term cooperation scheme, he noted.

“In aircraft maintenance, we do this in the long term. So, we have bought some spare parts some time ago,” he added.

The Indonesian Air Force, he said, will continue to monitor the situation in Russia and Ukraine.

Mosques to be optimally utilized as Hajj mentoring facilities

Mosques will be optimally utilized for Hajj and Umroh mentoring facilities, as the Religious Affairs Ministry will run a program to bolster their functions, the ministry’s Hajj and Umroh Director General Hilman Latief stated.

“The program initiated by the minister should be continually implemented in a bid to strengthen the functions for da’wah and education. The directorate general will soon launch its top-notch program called the Sapa Jamaah Haji (Greeting Hajj Pilgrims), or SJH,” Latief noted in a statement received here on Friday.

SJH is an educational program that edifies and guides the Hajj pilgrim, he remarked.

The mentoring program was launched in response to the large number of prospective Hajj pilgrims, currently reaching 5.2 million, who are awaiting departure.

“Apart from strengthening education and literacy on Hajj through electronic and digital platforms, SJH will also be run in mosques both near the Hajj dormitories and among members of the public,” he noted.

The minister initiated the program while speaking at the national working meeting of the Islamic community guidance directorate general, he remarked.

SJH is among the ministry’s prioritized programs that should be immediately implemented, Latief cited the minister as saying.

“The Religious Affairs Ministry should strengthen the mosque’s functions as the center of civilization,” Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas remarked.

Qoumas spoke of his intent to not only utilize mosques for spiritual strengthening but also to serve as the sources of enlightenment, peace, and tranquility among members of the public.

Govt establishes 854 disaster resilient villages , 208 social shelters

The Ministry of Social Affairs has established 854 Disaster Resilient Villages (KSB) and 208 social shelters to anticipate natural disasters in several vulnerable areas in Indonesia.

The statistics are based on data provided by the Directorate of Social Protection for Natural Disaster Victims (Dit PKSBA).

The KSB and social shelters have been established at the direction of Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini, the directorate’s mitigation sub-coordinator Tota Oceanna Zonneveld said on behalf of acting director Iyan Kusmadiana in a written statement issued on Friday.

Developing the villages and shelters is aimed to ensure community preparation in facing disaster threats, as well as to map natural resources, human resources (HR), and infrastructure that can be used when a natural disaster occurs, Zonneveld said.

“Until December 2021, there were a total of 854 KSBs spread across 34 provinces throughout Indonesia, with the highest number of locations, namely 99 KSBs in West Java province,” Zonneveld added.

To support the handling of natural disasters, Minister Rismaharini has instructed all levels of the ministry to establish social shelters in disaster-prone areas by collaborating with regional governments and other related parties, the official said.

“Until now, a total of 208 social shelters have been established in 13 provinces, namely in West Java 43, Central Java 37, East Java 15, Banten 3, West Kalimantan 47, South Kalimantan 7, North Kalimantan 2, East Kalimantan 2, East Nusa Tenggara 16, South Sulawesi 11, DI Yogyakarta 2, Aceh 14, and West Nusa Tenggara 9,” Zonneveld informed.

Zonneveld further said that the area classified as the most disaster-prone is West Java, particularly Sumedang district.

The hilly topography of the area holds potential for natural disasters in the form of landslides, he added. There are two KSBs in Sumedang district, namely in Tanjungkarya and Cimanggu sub-districts, Zonneveld said.

The KSB program has involved the organization of several community-based activities, such as providing briefings on procedures for evacuation, establishing shelters, providing first aid, and preparing social shelters, Zonneveld added.

For instance, in Cihanjuang village in Cimanggung sub-district, Sumedang, a landslide had occurred on January 9, 2021, he said. At that time, the community was not ready to face the natural disaster, he added. This resulted in 16 fatalities and dozens of injuries, Zonneveld continued.

Minister Rismaharini later visited the location and brought aid and ordered the establishment of a KSB immediately so that the community could carry out disaster mitigation, he said. With the existence of the KSB, local residents can be prepared when a natural disaster occurs, Zonneveld added.

BP2MI to assist workers evacuated from Ukraine to return home

Head of the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI) Benny Rhamdani made assurance of accommodating the returning 30 migrant workers evacuated from Ukraine to their respective hometowns after completing their quarantine period.

“The return of the migrant workers to their hometowns is our responsibility,” Rhamdani remarked during a virtual press conference on Friday.

Most of them from Bali worked as spa therapists in Ukraine.

The agency confirmed that eight of the 30 workers were registered in BP2MI’s Computerized System for Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection (SISKOP2MI).

Meanwhile, the rest of them had not been recorded in the system, the BP2MI head noted.

However, the 22 people were not non-procedural employees. They were official workers, who were sent through an independent worker dispatch scheme.

Rhamdani affirmed that the eight workers registered in the system had got employment social security. Meanwhile, the BP2MI still needs to verify the social security of the 22 other employees.

Furthermore, the employees are allowed to hold their contracts at their current workplace in Ukraine. However, they have to wait until the conflict is over before they can return to work in the country.

“If they choose to terminate their contracts to find new jobs in other countries, we will facilitate them. We will facilitate their mediation with users in their desired placement countries,” the BP2MI head added.

Currently, all evacuated migrant workers are conducting isolation at the Pasar Rumput COVID-19 Emergency Hospital.

Earlier, a total of 80 Indonesian citizens (WNI) evacuated from Ukraine had landed at the Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang City, Banten Province, at 5:10 p.m. Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB) on March 3, 2022.

In her remarks while welcoming the evacuees at the airport, Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi lauded BP2MI for the help extended during the repatriation process.

However, six migrant workers are still left in Bucharest, Romania, since they have been tested positive for COVID-19.

Indonesian Air Force readies pilots to fly Rafale fighter jets

Air Force Chief of Staff Marshal Fadjar Prasetyo is preparing special pilots to fly the 4.5 generation Dassault Rafale fighter jets that Indonesia had bought from France.

“We have prepared several pilots, but we have not determined the number. However, we have readied the criteria and those who are eligible to fly the Rafale,” Prasetyo remarked after the 2022 Indonesian Air Force Leadership Meeting at the Air Force Headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta, Friday.

Prasetyo remarked that the fighter pilots will receive training in France and Indonesia before being assigned to the existing squadron.

However, he noted that the new placement for the jet unit was not easy since several requirements had to be met.

“This is because placing air units is quite complex. There are several requirements that must be met,” he pointed out.

Earlier, Defense Minister Prabowo Sugianto signed a cooperation contract for the purchase of six French-made 4.5 generation Dassault Rafale fighter aircraft.

Subianto announced the purchase after receiving an honorary visit from the Minister of the Armed Forces of the French Republic Florence Parly at the Ministry of Defense Office in Jakarta, February 10.

Subianto affirmed that Indonesia will make a significant purchase of the Military Armament System (alutsista) for multirole combat aircraft by acquiring 42 Rafale aircraft.

“We start today by signing the first contract for six planes,” Prabowo remarked.

Furthermore, it will be followed by a contract for 36 more aircraft, with support for training in the required weapons and simulators, he noted.

In addition to purchase of the aircraft, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was inked between Dassault and PT Dirgantara Indonesia under which it was agreed to maintain and repair French aircraft in Indonesia.

The Dassault Rafale is an all-role fighter or omnirole fighter that has been operated by France since 2004. Until 2018, France had operated at least 132 Rafale aircraft for the Air Force and 48 units for the French Navy.

Several other countries are also keen to use the Rafale as their fighter aircraft, including Egypt by having 24 units; Qatar, 36 units; and India, 36 units.

The aircraft also regularly participate in multinational drillings, such as Red Flag, ATLC, Tiger Meet, Maple Flag, Arctic Challenge, Pitch Black, and Bold Quest.

With a wingspan of 10.9 meters, length of 15.3 meters, and height of 5.3 meters, the Rafale uses a twin turbofan engine coded M88 that is claimed to achieve a maximum speed of 1,389 km per hour, with an operating altitude of 50 thousand feet.
