10 Global Pharmaceutical Companies Launch First-of-its-Kind Supplier Program to Advance Climate Action

  • Collaboration aims to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the pharmaceutical value chain.
  • Schneider Electric to design and deliver global program, convened by partner Carnstone.

4 November 2021, Rueil-Malmaison – Schneider Electric, the global leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, which was recognized in 2021 as the world’s most sustainable corporation by the Corporate Knights Global 100 Index, and Carnstone, an independent management consultancy specializing in corporate responsibility and sustainability, today announced Energize – a program to increase access to renewable energy for pharmaceutical suppliers.

The Energize program is a collaboration between 10 global pharmaceutical companies to engage hundreds of suppliers in bold climate action and decarbonization of the pharmaceutical value chain. The program is a first-of-its-kind effort to leverage the scale of a single industry’s global supply chain in a pre-competitive fashion to drive system level change. Creating life-saving medicines and services requires a lot of energy, much of it being used by the value chain. By proactively engaging with their suppliers to create renewable energy opportunities, the 10 convening companies are taking meaningful action to collectively address their energy usage and inspire other industry sectors to follow suit.

The program will help pharmaceutical and healthcare suppliers to address their own operational Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions through green power procurement, which in turn will reduce the participating companies’ Scope 3 emissions. The program will be designed and delivered by Schneider Electric; the pharmaceutical companies will promote the program collectively, and individually invite their suppliers to participate. Corporate program members include:

  • AstraZeneca
  • Biogen
  • GSK
  • Johnson & Johnson
  • MSD
  • Novartis
  • Novo Nordisk
  • Pfizer
  • Sanofi
  • Takeda

The Energize program will enable pharmaceutical suppliers to learn more about renewable energy adoption and contracting. In practice, this will mean giving suppliers – who may not otherwise have the internal resources or expertise available – the opportunity to participate in the market for power purchase agreements (PPAs).

Today marks ‘Energy Day’ of the 2021 United Nations Conference of Parties (COP26) on climate change, where representatives from around the globe come together to accelerate action towards the mitigation of climate change, said Susan Uthayakumar, President, Sustainable Business at Schneider Electric. “In support of that mission, we’re honored to launch the Energize program and collaborate with the pharmaceutical industry to drive emissions reductions, ultimately benefitting both people and our planet.

We believe Energize will be a really effective collaboration of pharmaceutical companies looking to take bold climate action. Every business should be moving aggressively towards using 100% renewable electricity, and supporting their supply chains to do the same,” said Sam Kimmins, Head of RE100, Climate Group.

Renewable energy procurement can be challenging for companies of all sizes for a variety of reasons. The Energize program is designed to overcome typical market barriers such as inadequate knowledge about renewable energy transactions, load size, lack of credit, and the need for guidance throughout a complex and protracted contracting process. Participating suppliers will learn about the renewable energy market, receive guidance on PPAs, and have the opportunity to access and contract for renewable energy on their own or as part of a collaborative buyers’ cohort.

The program will initially focus on suppliers with energy load in Europe and North America, with the intention to expand globally where interest and renewable energy market opportunity align.

“Limiting global warming to safe levels will depend on moving the entire world to renewable energy. This is not something that companies can achieve on their own. We are strong believers in the power of collaboration, and are honored to be bringing the pharmaceutical industry together to drive the adoption of renewable energy in its supply chains,” said Glynn Roberts, Senior Partner, Carnstone.

Convened by Carnstone, the Energize program will be designed and delivered by Schneider Electric. Schneider’s team of leading renewable energy experts will engage with participating pharmaceutical suppliers and facilitate an education and project selection process to advance supplier progress towards the execution of individual and aggregated renewable energy purchases. Schneider Electric is the leading global consultant on corporate renewable purchasing, having advised companies on over 150 utility-scale PPA purchases across North America, Europe, India, Australia and Latin America for a total of more than 11,000 megawatts of wind and solar power. The Energize program will be powered by Schneider’s NEO Network™, a global collaboration platform and community designed to accelerate renewable energy decision-making and decarbonization.

Pharmaceutical suppliers, other pharmaceutical, bioscience, and healthcare corporations, members of the media, and interested parties are welcome to join one of two introductory sessions to learn more about the program and how to participate:

‘Global Forests Need Global Governance: Tropical Timber Accord’ Launches at COP26

A major new proposal to tackle illegal deforestation and strengthen legal governance frameworks in tropical forest producer countries and within international timber supply chains has been launched at COP26.

LONDON, Nov. 04, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Billed as a “call to action” from the global private sector involved in forest management and timber production, the Tropical Timber Accord – “Global Forests need Global Governance“, developed in concert by the UK Timber Trade Federation (TTF), highlights that strong, inclusive legal frameworks are essential for the sustainable management of tropical forests and that this underpins all other climate policy ambitions.

The paper proposes a new governance approach for the global tropical forest sector based on national standards within an international framework. Crucially, it also proposes supporting an international secretariat to administer and oversee the development of this framework.

Produced from a series of workshops with trade associations and businesses throughout the tropical production belt and facilitated and led by TTF, the Accord is supported by associations in both producer and consumer nations including China, Europe and the UK.

“We really welcome this call to action that the TTF has facilitated. We have to be able to support growth in countries across the world where the forests are an important economic resource, but at the same time, protect and support our climate change objectives,” said Vel Gnanendran, Climate and Environment Director, FCDO.

Sheam Satkuru, Director of Operations, ITTO, said that the international tropical timber agreement 2006 is an established legal framework and a partnership between producers and consumers. Protecting and sustainably managing tropical forests cannot be left to “one-sided” approaches, but must be incentivised through continual dialogue and resources which support sustainable production, commits to sustainable consumption and shares the cost of enforcement.

“The tropical timber and forest sector has a key role in achieving the forest management and conservation goals of COP26, and this requires the private sector, governments and civil society coming together to promote governance and sustainable management of resources,” Satkuru said.

David Hopkins, CEO of the TTF, said, “It was fantastic to see the pledges being made in the Glasgow Leaders Declaration on Forests and Land Use, and the other commitments being made toward ending illegal deforestation throughout the world. Now we need to start to put some of the detail behind those pledges into action, with a far stronger global legal framework governing the management of forests and the supply chains through international trade.

“This is the first time that the global private sector has come together to speak with one united voice to advocate for greater global governance and enforceable legal frameworks. We need to act now – there is no time to lose.”

The Tropical Timber Accord was launched in the Blue Zone at COP26 within the UK Pavilion on Tuesday, November 2, 13.15 GMT, and will be featured in the Nature+Zone, Indonesian, and COMIFAC pavilions.

Ministry urges Himbara to expedite social aid distribution

Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini urged the State-Owned Bank Association (Himbara) to immediately distribute social assistance in the form of the Family Hope Program (PKH) and non-cash food assistance (BPNT).

“In the midst of a flood disaster, like what happened in several areas in West Kalimantan, I ask Himbara to immediately distribute the social aid for the beneficiaries,” Rismaharini said, Thursday.

This was based on the fact that many social aid recipients had not received their PKH or BPNT aid, including in West Kalimantan, she stated.

The social assistance can be disbursed within 2 to 3 days and handed over directly to the beneficiaries, the minister requested.

“I asked that the social aid to be immediately disbursed. Gather the recipients in one place, do not give any reason. Please find solutions so that they can receive social assistance,” she reminded.

On the occasion, Rismaharini also helped the social assistance recipients who had not received their portion, as well as helping the social assistance recipients whose ID cards were damaged to still receive their share.

Furthermore, the minister witnessed the symbolic disbursement of PKH social assistance recipients from Himbara representations.

One of the recipients, Ernawati, from Segon Village, East Pontianak, said she was happy to receive her PKH assistance which was really needed during the pandemic.

“I am very happy to be able to receive PKH assistance this morning. Thank you Minister Rismaharini. This assistance is very helpful for the family’s economy,” she remarked.

Another beneficiary from West Pontianak, Sumiati, was thankful for the social assistance. She admitted that it was the first time she had received her PKH and the Minister of Social Affairs immediately handed it over.

“Praise God, I received Rp2,947,000 PKH assistance. Thank you, Minister. I have one child in school and one toddler. This assistance is very helpful,” she said.

Yogyakarta warns residents of possible landslides during rain season

The Yogyakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has warned residents living along the riverbanks to remain alert for potential disasters during the rainy season, including landslides.

“All areas along the river are areas that are prone to disasters during the rainy season, such as landslides to floods. For this reason, vigilance needs to continue to be practiced, so that it can reduce disaster risk,” the agency’s head, Nur Hidayat, said in Yogyakarta on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the agency reported a large landslide along the Gajah Wong River. The landslide struck Muja Muju Village after heavy rains, Hidayat said.

Some other places were also affected by the landslide, including the area under the Winong Bridge in the Gajah Wong River and in Serangan on the Winongo River, the agency said.

The agency has assessed and reported the damage suffered by those areas to the Yogyakarta Department of Public Works, Housing, and Settlement Areas (DPUPKP), Hidayat informed.

“We have also mapped the risk of disaster in riverbank areas,” he said.

The Yogyakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency has collected data pertaining to the number of residents living on riverbanks and mapped evacuation routes and evacuation points in case a disaster occurs, he elaborated.

“So, there is already mitigation that we hope can help the community to take quick steps in the event of a disaster,” he added.

The presence of Disaster Resilient Villages (KTB), spread over 130 villages in Yogyakarta city, is expected to help in the initial handling in the event of a disaster, Hidayat pointed out.

“We have provided simulations and training on disaster management for KTBs. Disaster mitigation equipment have also been provided, such as chainsaws, water pumps, communication devices, and others,” he revealed.

He reminded all Disaster Resilient Villages to re-check their disaster mitigation equipment and facilities to make sure they were in good condition and ready to be used at any time.

UAE committed to investing $32.7 billion in Indonesia

Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is committed to investing $32.7 billion, equivalent to Rp469 trillion assuming an exchange rate of Rp14,346 per US dollar, in Indonesia.

“This figure is the total investments handled by the Indonesia Investment Authority (INA) and the Investment Ministry,” he said during an online press conference on Thursday.

The conference was broadcasted on the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel on the first day of Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s working visit to the UAE.

The investment will be allocated to several sectors, such as health, new and renewable energy and port infrastructure, as well as food.

“In the food sector, the investment will improve the quality of our seedlings, so we can achieve a high production value,” said Lahadalia, who is also the Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM).

In terms of attracting the attention of UAE investors, he said the Indonesian government will help encourage investment, such as by guaranteeing the facilitation of investment licenses and providing incentives.

The investments will also promote further cooperation between UAE investors and Indonesian entrepreneurs, including micro, small and medium enterprises.

“Based on the meeting between the two governments, I assessed that the perception of UAE investors towards Indonesia is getting better each day. The $32.7 billion is generated from UAE investors’ trust and confidence in Indonesia,” Lahadalia explained.

President Widodo will continue his working visit on Thursday local time to meet UAE Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, as well as a number of business leaders.

Lahadalia expects the investment forum held on Thursday to increase the country’s investment value to be more than $35 billion.

West Kalimantan may experience rain next week: BMKG

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency has forecast light to heavy rain in West Kalimantan Province next week as several flood victims in certain areas of Sekadau District still take refuge.

“The weather forecast for the next week starting from November 8-14, 2021 in the West Kalimantan region, there will be light to heavy rain, which can be accompanied by lightning, thunder, and strong winds of short duration,” a weather forecaster with the Supadio Pontianak Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency, Debiriyan Saputri, said when contacted in Sungai Raya on Thursday.

She also said heavy intensity rainy is common in West Kalimantan and can cause flooding during the rainy season and smog during the long dry season. Flooding usually occurs in January, March, April, November, and December, she noted.

“The rainy weather, which has the potential to be light to heavy, that usually occurs in West Kalimantan, causes flooding and smog (in the dry season). Therefore, the public is advised not to do activities that can cause forest and land fires,” she cautioned.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency had also issued an early warning regarding heavy rains that could cause flooding in many areas in the province.

Other provinces such as Central Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, North Maluku, Maluku, West Papua, and Papua are also likely to experience heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds, Saputri forecast.

She also urged the public to remain vigilant and alert for the impact of moderate to heavy rains, ranging from floods, water stagnation, landslides, particularly in areas where natural disasters often occur.

Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor of Pontianak, Bahasan, said the city’s government and its stakeholders held a meeting to prepare measures to deal with floods.

He highlighted that the city often experiences natural disasters, such as tornadoes, floods, as well as forest and land fires. Moreover, a number of districts in West Kalimantan are struck by floods, he said.

“This is a reminder for us to remain vigilant against flood disasters, considering that it is still an island and it is possible that it could also happen in Pontianak,” he warned.

Pontianak city recorded 125 residential and shop-house fires, 98 forest and land fires, 9 tornadoes, and 6 floods between 2017 and 2020, he noted.

The deputy mayor reminded all agencies to ensure that their equipment and supporting infrastructure were ready.

“To avoid the risk of loss of life and property, I compel to the entire community, especially those living along riverbanks and those living in areas prone to tornadoes, to always be vigilant and alert,” he added.
