Bang yai: A 4-year-old girl tragically drowned after falling into a canal while playing with her 2-year-old brother in Nonthaburi Province. CCTV footage captured the incident at around 5 p.m. at the pier of the Ban Bang Muang Subdistrict Municipality, showing the girl misstepping and struggling in the water before eventually drowning.
According to Thai News Agency, officials were alerted and promptly dispatched rescue teams, divers, and medical personnel to the site, which was a single-story wooden house along the Bang Yai Canal. The young victim, identified as Dien, was a Vietnamese refugee living in the area. Her distraught parents watched the search efforts, supported by over 30 Vietnamese relatives and neighbors. After approximately 30 minutes, officials recovered the girl's body.
The body was transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death before being returned to her family for religious rites. Pol. Col. Sirapop Anusiri, Superintendent of Bang Yai Police Station, confirmed the incident through CCTV footage and emphasized the importance of parental supervision near waterways.
Mr. Phonthep Pradubploy, Mayor of Bang Muang Subdistrict Municipality, highlighted that this area has seen previous drowning incidents due to its proximity to an unfenced canal. He urged parents to be vigilant, especially during school breaks when children frequently play near the water.
