Biodiversity Data from NORI-D Exploration Area Now Available on UNESCO’s Ocean Biodiversity Information System, Increases Biodiversity Records for the Clarion-Clipperton Zone by About 150%

Assessing deep-sea biodiversity

A scientist inspects organisms collected during one of NORI’s 17 offshore environmental research campaigns as part of its Environmental and Social Impact Assessment.

  • Following the publication of biodiversity data collected from the NORI-D exploration area on UNESCO’s Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS) on 22 June 2023, The Metals Company’s subsidiary NORI becomes the single largest contributor of biological occurrence data to the OBIS ISA-node, increasing biodiversity records available for the Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ) by about 150%.
  • NORI data now available on the OBIS ISA-node represents less than half of the total dataset collected to date, with the remaining baseline biological data currently being collated and further submissions expected in the coming months to ISA DeepData and the OBIS ISA-node.
  • The ISA-node provides access to a wealth of information on the deep-sea and biological resources in the global commons for all society to use. In a week since the publication on OBIS, the NORI-D biodiversity records have been downloaded 67 times, and the total number of occurrence records downloaded exceeds 4.4 million.
  • The complete NORI-D dataset is expected to be one of the most comprehensive datasets ever gathered in the deep-sea and will form the basis of NORI’s Environmental Impact Statement, an integral part of the application to the International Seabed Authority for an exploitation contract in NORI-D area.

NEW YORK, July 03, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — TMC the metals company Inc. (Nasdaq: TMC) (“TMC” or the “Company”), an explorer of the world’s largest estimated undeveloped source of critical battery metals, today announced that data submitted by its subsidiary NORI to the International Seabed Authority’s ‘DeepData’ platform in March 2023 has now been made available to the public via UNESCO’s Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS), increasing the biodiversity occurrence records contained within the OBIS ISA node for the Clarion Clipperton Zone by about 150%.

As the first UN body to become a member of the OBIS network, the ISA publishes biodiversity data collected by contractors and submitted to its DeepData platform to the OBIS ISA-node. The publication of this initial batch of data to the OBIS ISA node follows NORI’s decade-long research efforts to define the polymetallic nodule resource and develop an environmental baseline for its NORI-D exploration area, as part of its Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for the NORI-D Nodule Project. Since 2012, the Company has collaborated with leading industry experts and independent scientists from marine research institutions from around the world on its ESIA, gathering data throughout 17 offshore campaigns, representing over 470 operational research days on the NORI-D area.

Collected using a suite of high-tech equipment, the NORI dataset now available on OBIS includes over 1,400 biological samples from extensive boxcore and multicore sampling, and over 8,000 images analyzed for benthic megafauna captured by Remotely Operated Vehicles from two offshore campaigns. With NORI’s initial ISA submission to DeepData providing a significant expansion to the biological holdings contained within, the upload of this data to OBIS sees NORI becoming the single largest data provider to the OBIS ISA node, providing almost 60% of the records. OBIS holds the world’s largest scientific knowledge base on the diversity, distribution and abundance of all marine organisms.

The NORI dataset is now available for public scrutiny and interrogation. Since its publication on June 22, 2023, records from the NORI dataset have been downloaded 67 times, and the total number of occurrence records downloaded so far exceeds 4.4 million.

Dr Michael Clarke, Environmental Manager at The Metals Company, said: “Through our own research efforts and by sharing our data publicly, we expect that the 3D environment of NORI-D will become one of the most highly-characterized areas of our planet’s oceans. This is just a taste of what’s to come and we look forward to sharing data from additional campaigns, as well as all remaining data concerning ocean geochemistry, bathymetry and pelagic biodiversity with the scientific community once we’ve gone through the labor-intensive process of analyzing this wealth of information.”

Over the coming months, NORI will continue working with research teams to fully collate and categorize the hundreds of terabytes of data and thousands of biological samples that have been collected to date. NORI expects numerous further papers to be published in peer-reviewed journals in the coming months and years, adding significantly to society’s understanding of the deep sea.

Indonesian President Arrives in Australia

Defense and renewable energy are on the agenda as Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo begins an official visit to Australia Monday.

The Indonesian leader is on a three-day trip to Australia.

Before his trip, President Joko Widodo told Australian media that the two countries “have a great potential for integration.”

Indonesia has ambitions to become a global hub for the manufacture of electric batteries and vehicles, or EVs.

Indonesia is the world’s biggest producer of nickel, a key component for EV batteries, but it lacks Australia’s reserves of lithium, another critical ingredient.

The Indonesian president urged Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to co-operate in the production of EV batteries during the G20 Summit in Bali last November.

In a statement, Albanese said “as one of our closest neighbours, Australia is building extensive cooperation with Indonesia on climate, economic development, education and regional security issues.”

In 2021-22, total two-way trade in goods and services between Australia and Indonesia was worth $12.1 billion, making Indonesia Australia’s 14th largest trading partner.

Andrew Hudson, from the Centre for Policy Development – a research organization – told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. there is great trading potential.

“Indonesia’s economy is forecast to become the fourth largest in the world and larger than Germany or (the) UK in just seven years and, yet, Indonesia remains outside Australia’s top ten trading partners. It is obviously our largest neighbor, so I think there is a huge opportunity there.”

Widodo will meet Prime Minister Albanese for talks Tuesday. Albanese will urge for progress on an upgraded defence deal with Indonesia, although analysts have said that Australia’s commitment to the new AUKUS alliance with the United States and Britain has provoked some uncertainty and hesitancy in Jakarta.

Man handed six-year prison term for anti-State propaganda

A man residing in Mo Lao ward, Hanoi’s Ha Dong district has been sentenced to six years in prison for “making, storing, distributing, or disseminating information, documents, and items against the State of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.”

The Hanoi People’s Court on July 3 opened a first-instance trial for 39-year-old Phan Son Tung, with its ruling made in pursuant to Article 117, Clause 1 of the Penal Code.

According to the indictment issued by the Hanoi People’s Procuracy, the Investigation Security Agency of the Hanoi Police on March 1, 2022 received an official dispatch attached with documents from the Division of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention and Control under the Ministry of Public Security, asking for verification and handling of violations in the use of the Internet related to Tung.

Some of his video clips posted on Facebook and YouTube had contents slandering the regime, distorting the truth about the political and socio-economic situation in Vietnam, and defaming Party and State leaders.

Investigators found that since 2011, Tung had created, managed and used four accounts on social networks, with three on YouTube, namely “Vi Vietnam thinh Vuong” (For prosperous Vietnam), “Son Tung TV” and “Phan Son Tung”, and another on Facebook namely “David Phan.”

As of August 2022, Tung published more than 1,000 video clips on his Facebook account, which had been available on the YouTube channels earlier, attracting 148 million views and 530,000 followers.

Between August 5-31, 2022, he posted 10 video clips on “Vi Vietnam thinh Vuong”, calling for the establishment of an illegal organisation with the name of “Dang Vietnam thinh Vuong” (Prosperous Vietnamese party) to lure public attention.

Competent forces concluded that Tung made and distributed 16 video clips online with contents violating the law, most of them against the State, Party and administration.

At the court, Tung confessed his distribution of the video clips, but did not admit that their contents violate the law./.

PM attends economic diplomacy promotion conference

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on July 3 attended the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ virtual conference on promoting the implementation of economic diplomacy serving socio-economic development in the last half of 2023.

The event gathered participants from the ministry’s headquarters in Hanoi and 94 Vietnamese representative offices overseas.

In his opening remarks, PM Chinh praised the ministry’s and representative offices’ close coordination with other ministries, sectors, localities, and enterprises to actively, proactively, and effectively carry out external relations tasks, including economic diplomacy.

He expressed his delight at the successful implementation of the vaccine diplomacy, which has contributed to Vietnam’s pandemic control, early reopening, and socio-economic recovery and development.

The Government leader pointed to a number of lessons for the diplomacy sector, including active, positive and timely implementation of policies, orientations, resolutions and programmes of the Party and State, and keeping a close eye on the situation to give flexible responses.

It is necessary to stay firm with principles and flexible in responding, placing the nation’s interests at top priority; while maintaining good control of the situation and proposing solutions to overcome challenges to fulfil the country’s goals, he said.

Another lesson that the PM highlighted is upholding responsibility of diplomatic officials, fostering the coordination among ministries, sectors, localities and businesses, and promoting advantages from the relations between Vietnam and particular countries to lift up the relations to a new height, focusing on economic diplomacy.

The Government leader recommended participants focus on discussing specific solutions to boost growth drivers through attracting high-quality investment; diversify markets, products, and supply chains; fully tap traditional markets and expand potential ones; accelerate the signing of free trade agreements (FTAs); and promote Vietnamese goods in Halal markets.

He also highlighted the importance of connecting provinces and cities, representative agencies abroad, and businesses to make the most of every opportunity and demonstrate the highest sense of responsibility for the sake of the nation, the development of the country and the happiness of the people./.

Vietnam attaches importance to cooperation with ESCAP: FM

Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son affirmed on July 3 that Vietnam attaches great importance to cooperation with the United Nations (UN) in general and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in particular.

During his talks with Under-Secretary-General of the UN and Executive Secretary of the ESCAP Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana in Hanoi, Son said Alisjahbana’s Vietnam visit from July 3-6 is of significance in the context that the world and the region are at the midpoint for implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and facing noted challenges, requiring stronger international cooperation.

Son briefed the UN official on Vietnam’s socio-economic situation and international integration, as well as major orientations for these fields.

The minister affirmed that Vietnam consistently pursues the foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralisation and diversification of relations, active and proactive international integration, and support for multilateralism and a world order based on international law and the UN Charter.

He used the occasion to thank the UN and its ESCAP for their companionship and support for Vietnam’s socio-economic development and international integration over the past decades.

For her part, Alisjahbana expressed her good sentiments to Vietnam, and impressions on its socio-economic achievements.

She highly valued Vietnam’s increasing role and position in the region and the world, as well as the country’s active and effective contributions to the ESCAP, saying the commission wants to strengthen cooperation with the country in the coming time.

The two sides shared the view on positive developments of cooperation over the past time and discussed measures to further enhance the collaboration in the time ahead.

Son proposed the UN and the ESCAP in particular accompany and provide technical support for Vietnam in sustainable development and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Alisjahbana affirmed her readiness to engage in discussions with the Vietnamese side regarding the possibility of organising a national forum on SDGs in 2024 to accelerate the implementation of the goals.

They agreed to step up cooperation activities in such areas as climate change adaptation, the materialisation of the Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETP), green energy transition in transportation, transport infrastructure development, statistical capacity strengthening, digital transformation, science-technology, and innovation.

The ESCAP is the most inclusive intergovernmental platform in the Asia-Pacific region. The commission promotes cooperation among its 53 member States and nine associate members in pursuit of solutions to sustainable development challenges. The ESCAP is one of the five regional commissions of the UN.

The ESCAP has maintained its relationship with Vietnam since national reunification, and provided technical support for the country in almost socio-economic sectors./.
