He remarked that the projects to repair several roads in Lampung Province would commence at the earliest. Meanwhile, apart from inspecting road conditions in Lampung, the president said that he undertook the visit to the southernmost province on Sumatra Island to observe food prices in traditional markets. Jokowi stressed that proper road infrastructure would reduce logistics costs and prevent commodity prices and regional inflation from surging. “(Our visit) is to see inflation rates and prices and observe infrastructures, particularly roads. Logistics costs depend on the infrastructure quality we have,” he stated. Earlier, the president said he was keen to confirm the accuracy of videos depicting heavily damaged roads in Lampung circulating on social media, and hence, he took the decision to visit the province on Friday. “I want to see whether the videos (circulating on social media) and those reported by media are true or not,” Jokowi remarked during his visit to Sarinah Department Store here, Thursday (May 4). ASEAN must move beyond Five-Point Consensus in Myanmar: rights bodies

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Human rights organization members of the Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA) on Wednesday (May 3) urged the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to move beyond the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) to address the Myanmar crisis. The forum sent an open letter to ASEAN leaders ahead of the upcoming 42nd ASEAN Summit on May 911, 2023. The letter was signed by 25 human rights organizations from Asia. “We urge ASEAN leaders to immediately move away from the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus and create a more robust and tangible action to stop the military junta’s violence and atrocity crimes,” it said in a statement posted on the Progressive Voice Myanmar’s website. It also urged ASEAN to immediately organize a constructive and inclusive dialogue with all relevant stakeholders and parties, including the National Unity Government of Myanmar (NUG) as the democratically-elected government, representatives of Ethnic Resistance Organizations (EROs), and Myanmar’s civil society groups. It callson ASEAN to work closely with the United Nations, particularly the Security Council and the Secretary-General, in the effort to resolve the crisis in Myanmar. Those organizations have expressed grave concern over the lack of tangible action from ASEAN in ending the crisis in Myanmar. In April 2021, ASEAN and Senior General Min Aung Hlaing agreed to the Five-Point Consensus as a peace plan for addressing Myanmar’s crisis. The consensus called for an immediate end to violence; holding of dialogue among all parties; the appointment of a special envoy; allowing humanitarian assistance from the ASEAN; and permitting an ASEAN special envoy to visit Myanmar to meet with all parties. However, two years since its adoption, the Myanmar military junta has disregarded the peace plan. The human rights organizations said that ASEAN has failed not only in holding the Myanmar junta to account for its commitment to the consensus, but also in uniting its efforts and leadership for promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. The junta has increasingly used air strikes as a strategy to cause significant damage and civilian casualties on the ground, the statement noted. The military junta carried out 734 air strikes between February 2021 and January 2023, which resulted in 356 civilian deaths, it added. The human rights organizations expressed the hope that ASEAN will immediately appoint a special envoy to Myanmar and set up a clear mandate. The role of the special envoy must be full-time, lasting more than one year, and they must be accountable to ASEAN leaders and foreign ministers instead of the incumbent ASEAN chair, they said. “We sincerely hope that these concrete actions, which are aligned with peoples’ voices from the ground, will be heard and implemented in the upcoming summit to show ASEAN’s accountability, credibility, and effectiveness,” the statement said. baca-jugaRelated news: Building trust important in Myanmar to support peace: Marsudi Related news: European Union supports ASEAN to overcome Myanmar crisis

Bali seeks solutions to issues of regulation-flouting foreign tourists

We want to implement the system, but we will consider Bali’s support capacity to determine the exact quota Badung, Bali (ANTARA) – Bali Governor I Wayan Koster said his side would discuss tourism issues caused by foreign tourists flouting local regulations and its solutions at a seminar on Bali’s future development.”(Errant tourists) will be one issue discussed at the Bali of the future (seminar) for the next 100 years,” Koster stated here, Thursday. Former president Megawati Sukarnoputri and other government and ministry officials would partake in the “Direction of the Future Bali Development” seminar to deliberate issues in Bali, he noted. One of the solutions proposed by his side to address the tourism issue is introducing a quota system for foreign tourists for the next 100 years, the governor remarked, adding that the quota system will relieve Bali from the pressures of mass tourism. He explained that the proposed quota system aims to reduce the risk of foreign tourists violating local laws, for instance, by working or opening a business while holding a tourist visa, which is illegal by Indonesian law, after running out of money in Bali. “If we do nothing (on this issue), we are afraid more stingy tourists will arrive. (Because they have no money), they will eat only cheap foods and ride only motorbikes — while violating laws. And in the end, they plunder ATMs (out of desperation),” Koster stated. The governor said comprehensive solutions must be conceived to address locals’ concerns about erratic foreign tourists’ behavior that disrupt their lives. The provincial authority will deliberate the proposed quota system with local tourism associations, including the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), and relevant stakeholders, he affirmed. “We want to implement the system, but we will consider Bali’s support capacity to determine the exact quota,” Koster stated. baca-jugaRelated news: Not too late to handle tourists working illegally in Bali: KadinRelated news: No impact of tightening of tourist rules on arrivals: OfficialRelated news: MPR seeks tourist task force for Bali

Women journalists vulnerable to gender-based violence: Commission

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Women journalists are vulnerable to gender-based violence in carrying out their journalistic duties, a Member of the National Commission on Violence against Women (Komnas Perempuan)Veryanto Sitohangsaid.n example of such violence pertains to a case involving the sexual harassment faced by a female journalist while covering a national work meeting of one of the political parties in Jakarta in February this year. The protection of female journalists while doing their job became an important agenda of the media companies under the supervision of the Press Council, he said when contacted here on Thursday. This is especially important given that Indonesia has Law No. 12 of 2022 on Sexual Violence Crime, he added. Sitohang said he expects that the Press Council will issue Sexual Violence Reporting Guideline quickly, including for sexual violence prevention and handling and female journalist protection. In commemoration of the 2023 World Press Freedom Day, the commission lauded journalists, specifically female journalists, for their work to support the eradication of violence against women and female leaders. This is despite the fact that their job is fraught with danger and there is no optimal protection for female media workers yet. The commission also expressed support for press freedom as one of the pillars of democracy and urged the government to open access to female journalists to do their job in conflict regions with protection insurance, Sitohang said. The freedom of the press is mandated within Article 19 of the Declaration of Human Rights, he added. Meanwhile, Head of the Women Workers Team at Komnas PerempuanTiasri Wiandanisaid there are important aspects that should be considered in relation to the prevalence of violence against women in workplace cases. These include the fact that sexual violence can affect a person’s mental and physical well-being. Because of this, in the effort to support workplace safety and health, the commission has urged everyone to create a safe and comfortable workplace for everyone, specifically female press workers. Employers, workers’ unions, and workers have the responsibility to make the workplace a safe space in terms of work relations, Wiandani said. baca-jugaRelated news: Indonesian female journalists talk about equality on IWD celebrationRelated news: Komnas urges film industry to be free from gender-based violenceRelated news: Women’s sexual harassment most frequently reported violence in 2022
