Bangkok: “Thanakorn” emphasizes the need for peaceful methods in addressing the Thai-Cambodian border issue, while ensuring Thailand is not at a disadvantage. He expresses his firm stance against any Cambodian encroachment on Thai territory.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, former Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office and Deputy Leader of the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party (RTSP), voiced his support for the military’s readiness to protect Thailand’s sovereignty. He urged the government to accelerate negotiations with Cambodia over the border dispute in the Chong Bok area of Ubon Ratchathani Province. Thanakorn stressed the importance of adhering to peaceful methods but cautioned against compromising Thailand’s position.
Thanakorn highlighted the recurring attempts by Cambodia to assert its rights and create unrest, potentially bringing the issue to international forums like the International Court of Justice. He called on the Thai Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, and Minister of Foreign Affairs to consider the situation carefully, adhering to the original negotiation framework between Thailand and Cambodia. Thanakorn emphasized the need for clear principles and urged the government to support the military’s stance, ensuring that Cambodia abides by previously used agreements and allows the Joint Thai-Cambodian Commission (JBC) to address border demarcation issues.
He reiterated that negotiations should remain bilateral, based on the original agreements at the army commander level, and discouraged involving international courts. Thanakorn urged the Thai government to maintain a clear and united stance with the military, ensuring strength in negotiations and avoiding any disadvantages for Thailand.
