Thaksin Shinawatra Addresses Decline in Chinese Tourists and Advocates for Thai Economic Innovations

Bangkok: Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra addressed concerns regarding the decline in Chinese tourists visiting Thailand, attributing the decrease to safety issues rather than the absence of entertainment complexes. He emphasized the importance of moving forward with Smart City initiatives, including the installation of AI cameras, to enhance safety and attract tourists. Thaksin also discussed the necessity of casinos in entertainment complexes to attract investment, as well as supporting the issuance of Golden Visas for foreigners to boost Thailand's GDP.

According to Thai News Agency, Thaksin delivered a special lecture titled 'Unlocking Thailand's Future, Fighting the Global Crisis' at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. He highlighted the potential of Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT) to drive economic growth by transforming into an aircraft maintenance center, passenger hub, and warehouse. He suggested that AOT could overcome service and connectivity issues to strengthen its role as a major economic contributor.

Thaksin pointed out that the decline in Chinese tourists was linked to safety concerns following incidents involving celebrities like Mr. Wang Ching. He stressed that enhancing safety through Smart City developments, such as AI camera installations, would help restore tourist confidence. He proposed personal accountability, stating he would insure and cover expenses for tourists affected by crimes in Thailand.

Reflecting on his tenure as Prime Minister, Thaksin recounted efforts to reassure the public during the SARS outbreak and the bird flu crisis, demonstrating risk-taking to bolster the tourism industry. He expressed optimism about initiatives like the Tomorrowland festival and Formula 1 race, which aim to stimulate tourism and economic activity in Thailand.

Thaksin also addressed the need for innovation in research and development, citing the potential for an Innovation Sandbox to explore advancements like gene therapy and stem cells. He advocated for the introduction of a nationwide Sandbox for E-money and cryptocurrencies, which could increase spending and economic activity in Thailand.

Highlighting the benefits of the Golden Visa program, Thaksin explained how long-term visas for foreigners could stimulate the real estate sector and contribute to GDP growth. He emphasized the importance of attracting wealthy foreigners to expand the tax base and support public welfare initiatives, ultimately reducing national debt and increasing government revenue.
