Bangkok: The Prime Minister has emphasized that the PM 2.5 dust issue is not only a national concern but also a priority on the ASEAN agenda, urging public cooperation to tackle the problem. The government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is initiating discussions with neighboring countries to address this environmental challenge collaboratively. A comprehensive long-term response plan is in place, while immediate measures include offering free train and bus rides to mitigate black smoke emissions. Work From Home is also being considered as a viable solution, pending further discussions.
According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra returned to Thailand after attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and addressed the PM 2.5 dust problem. She highlighted that this issue requires regional cooperation, particularly from ASEAN nations. The Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr. Marist Sengiampong, has been tasked with engaging in dialogues with countries involved in burning activities, which contribute to the dust problem. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of reducing burning activities across countries, including Thailand, where measures and legal frameworks are already being prepared since November to address potential burning incidents.
The Prime Minister noted that while the burning industry has seen a significant reduction compared to last year, the dust problem persists due to accumulation over time. She emphasized the need for collective action from citizens to address the issue effectively. The government is actively working on both short-term and long-term solutions to manage the situation.
Addressing the possibility of implementing Work From Home policies for government agencies, the Prime Minister indicated that discussions are underway to explore this option without disrupting essential services. The focus is on reducing travel to lower emissions during this period of heightened dust levels.
Regarding incentives for the private sector to adopt Work From Home practices, the Prime Minister mentioned that several companies have already implemented such measures. The government is also introducing urgent actions, such as providing free train rides with a budget of 140 million baht, to contribute to the overall solution of the dust problem.
