Jakarta: Jonathan Christie, world number 5 from Indonesia, has successfully advanced to the second round of the Indonesia Open badminton tournament. This afternoon, “View” Kunlavut Vitidsarn, world number 1 from Thailand, is set to compete.

In the Men’s Singles first round, Jonathan Christie faced Jia Heng Jason Tea, world number 24 from Singapore. In their previous meeting at the Thomas Cup in 2022, Christie won in straight games. This time, the Indonesian displayed superior skills but had to fight through three games to clinch a 2-1 victory with scores of 8-21, 21-11, and 21-12, thus progressing to the second round.
Jonathan Christie will now compete against world number 21 Lee Cheuk Yew from Hong Kong, who emerged victorious against world number 16 Goki Watanabe from Japan in a tightly contested match, winning 2-1 with scores of 21-16, 7-21, and 23-21 after an hour-long battle.
Later today, at approximately 1:30 p.m., ‘View’ Kunlavut Vitidsarn, the Thai badminton sensation who secured a silver medal at the 2024 Olympics and was recently crowned the world number 1 by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), will compete in the first round against Wang Tzuwei, the world number 26 from Taiwan. Kunlavut has triumphed in all their previous seven encounters. Should Kunlavut win today, he will advance to the second round to face either Lu Kwang-soo, the world number 11 from China, or Li Jia-hao, the world number 19 from Taiwan.
