Bangkok: Illegal immigration into Thailand is witnessing a significant surge following a crackdown on scam operations in Cambodia. The intensified enforcement has led to an increased number of Thai nationals, previously employed by gambling websites in Cambodia, fleeing back to their home country.
According to Thai News Agency, the crackdown initiated by South Korea, alongside other countries, has disrupted the operations of scammers in Cambodia. As a consequence, many Thais involved in these operations are now returning to Thailand. This movement has been compounded by ongoing border issues, including the closure of checkpoints, which have also contributed to Cambodians entering Thailand illegally, albeit through different channels.
The situation has brought renewed focus on border security and immigration policies, as authorities in Thailand grapple with the challenges posed by the influx. The closing of checkpoints, while intended to curb illegal crossings, has inadvertently led to increased attempts at unauthorized entry. This complex dynamic continues to be a pressing concern for both Thai authorities and neighboring countries.
