Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives to Be Chosen Next Week

Bangkok: The Chief Whip has announced that the process to select a new Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives will be concluded next week, following the dismissal of Pichet Chuamuangphan. The position is designated for a candidate from the Pheu Thai Party, with a decision expected by Tuesday. The government whip emphasized the court's decision as a cautionary tale for politicians, noting previous warnings that went unheeded.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Wisut Chainarun, Chairman of the Coordinating Committee of the coalition parties, was contacted by Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor Matha, Speaker of the House of Representatives, to expedite coordination for selecting a suitable replacement for Mr. Pichet. The selection is scheduled for Thursday, August 7th, amidst the upcoming discussions on the 2026 Budget Bill. The Pheu Thai Party is tasked with nominating a candidate during their meeting on Tuesday, August 5th.

While there is speculation that Mr. Wisut might assume the role, he mentioned that the decision will be made in the party meeting. He expressed no personal issues with his current work and stated that he can contribute effectively in any capacity. Should he become Deputy Speaker, he anticipates his responsibilities would be less demanding than his current role as Chief Whip, though he is concerned about leaving his current position.

Mr. Wisut reflected on Mr. Pichet's case, highlighting the court's ruling as an important lesson for politicians to exercise caution. He stressed the importance of avoiding self-serving actions and the need for consultation with various parties to mitigate risks. He admitted to having repeatedly warned Mr. Pichet out of concern, despite causing friction with those close to him. Nevertheless, he believes the incident will not tarnish the party's reputation.
