Thailand Secures Reduced US Import Tariffs at 19%

Bangkok: The Thai government has successfully negotiated a reduction in US import tariffs to 19%, according to a statement from Mr. Jirayu Huangsap, spokesman for the Prime Minister's Office. This new tariff rate, which is set to take effect on August 1, 2025, marks a significant achievement for Thailand, aligning it closely with other countries in the region. According to Thai News Agency, the agreement represents a 36% decrease from previous rates and matches the tariff levels of regional counterparts like Vietnam, the Philippines, and Japan. Mr. Jirayu emphasized that this development will help maintain Thailand's competitiveness within ASEAN markets, where countries have already secured favorable terms with the United States. Mr. Jirayu highlighted the strategic importance of the deal, noting that the 19% tariff is a crucial step in sustaining Thailand's export base and ensuring long-term economic stability. "This achievement underscores Thailand's potential in the global trade arena, especially amidst changing international trade policies," he stated, adding that the deal represents a win-win strategy for the nation.
