Bangkok: A 41-year-old woman battling cancer has lodged a complaint alleging she was deceived by a fortune teller into parting with over 2 million baht. The woman, a business owner, claims the fortune teller, known in the entertainment industry, manipulated her into worshipping a deity and having her fortune told. According to Thai News Agency, the woman sought aid at the Foundation for the Restoration of Social Justice, presenting documents and evidence to lawyer Ronnarong Kaewpetch, the foundation's president, and advisor Ms. Chadaporn Phongthong. She accused a renowned fortune teller of exploiting her situation, leading to her financial loss of over 2 million baht. The victim, diagnosed with cervical cancer, discovered the fortune teller through a television program and believed he could offer solutions to her problems. After learning of his reputed ceremonies for celebrities, she reached out via a LINE account for a reading, priced at 999 baht per session. However, there was a one- to two-year waiting l ist. A faster option with a six-month wait cost 5,000 baht, while a 10,000 baht fee expedited the process further. The LINE group administrator outlined additional costs for worshipping deities, suggesting Ganesha and Rasami at 45,000 baht each. Over three months, she spent a staggering 90,000 baht on these deities, culminating in a total expenditure exceeding 2 million baht. Despite her efforts, her situation deteriorated. The woman expressed her distress over the financial burden, stating she is now heavily in debt after borrowing money for deity statues and worship. Her health and financial condition continue to decline, leaving her nearly bankrupt and struggling with cancer treatment. She shared that upon realizing the deception, she discovered numerous others in the same LINE group had been similarly duped. Attorney Ronnarong indicated that the fortune teller's identity remains undisclosed as legal proceedings unfold. He plans to consult with the Central Investigation Bureau to advance the case. The Fo undation for Social Justice urges anyone affected to come forward and seek support.
