Attorney General Appeals Dismissal of Charges in Yoovidhya Car Speed Case

Bangkok: The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has issued an appeal order, dismissing the case against six defendants involved in altering the speed limit of "Boss Yoovidhya's" car. The appeal comes after the lower court's verdict to dismiss charges against Pol. Gen. Somyot and his associates, accused of corruption related to the speed limit change in the high-profile case involving Mr. Worayuth Yoovidhya.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sakkasem Nitrayok, Inspector-General of the Public Prosecutor's Office and spokesperson for the OAG, noted that the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) had communicated its resolution to initiate criminal proceedings against Pol. Gen. Somyot Poompanmoung and eight others. This case stems from a car crash involving Mr. Worayuth Yoovidhya, which resulted in the death of Pol. Sgt. Maj. Wichian Klanprasert. The OAG has tasked public prosecutors from its Special Branch, Division of Anti-Corruption Cases 1, to file a lawsuit against Pol. Gen. Somyot and several other defendants on various counts of misconduct and corruption.

In a previous ruling on April 22, 2025, the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases sentenced Mr. Chainarong Saengthong-aram and Mr. Net Naksuk for their roles in the case. Mr. Saengthong-aram received a two-year prison sentence, while Mr. Naksuk was sentenced to three years. However, charges against defendants 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 were dismissed, with the court ordering their detention pending appeal.

On August 22, 2025, the Attorney General decided to appeal the Court of First Instance's judgment, seeking to have defendants 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 sentenced on all counts as per the complaint. The decision not to appeal the sentences of defendants 4 and 8 was made in consultation with the NACC, as outlined under Section 61 of the 2018 Organic Act on Counter Corruption. The case has been sent back to the OAG's Department of Corruption Suppression 1 for further proceedings.
