AMLO Launches Investigation into Assets Linked to Wat Phra Bat Nam Phu Case

Bangkok: AMLO is actively gathering evidence to investigate the assets connected to the Wat Phra Bat Nam Phu case.

According to Thai News Agency, a spokesman from the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) disclosed that they are compiling evidence for submission to the Asset Transactions Committee. This committee is responsible for investigating the real estate assets tied to those involved in the case.

Mr. Wittaya Neetitham, Director of the Legal Division and spokesperson for AMLO, provided insights into the ongoing investigations following the arrests of the former abbot and Mr. Seksan, also known as Dr. B. The investigations commenced with searches at 17 locations post-arrest on August 26th. AMLO, in collaboration with the police, is set to examine financial transactions and collect evidence to present to the Transaction Committee for an extensive asset investigation. The focus will be on the financial dealings of the suspects, Mr. Alongkot and Mr. Seksan, alongside all accounts linked to transfers from Wat Phra Bat Nam Phu or the suspects.

A spokesperson for AMLO further explained that the police have cooperated with AMLO to utilize transaction data as evidence for criminal prosecution. This data will inform a proposal to the Transaction Committee, which will oversee asset investigations under anti-money laundering statutes. Preliminary evidence suggests that most assets are in real estate, which simplifies the verification process. Additionally, the police have the authority to seize donations for further investigation.
