Anutin Confident in Cambodia’s Compliance with ASEAN Declaration Signed in Malaysia

Bangkok: Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Anutin Charnvirakul, expressed confidence that Cambodia will adhere to a recently signed declaration, which was witnessed by key leaders including US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Anutin, who met with President Trump during the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia, disclosed details of their conversation, highlighting Trump's acceptance in principle of an invitation to visit Thailand.

According to Thai News Agency, Anutin discussed trade and tariffs with President Trump, emphasizing the significance of the US President's visit, as it has been over a decade since a sitting US President visited Thailand. The conversation also touched upon the recent declaration signed between Thailand and Cambodia. Anutin noted that the military is actively coordinating the border clearance process and has communicated that it will commence immediately. He suggested contacting the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Royal Thai Army for further details, as the army is leading the negotiation team in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Anutin also addressed queries about his interactions with Hun Manet, stating that while no private discussions have taken place, he anticipates further engagements following the declaration's signing. The focus remains on ensuring all actions align with the agreement's conditions swiftly to foster peace. On the topic of diplomatic relations with Cambodia, Anutin clarified that the process is ongoing and requires methodical steps from both nations.

When questioned about the resolution of past border conflicts, Anutin emphasized that fulfillment of the declaration's conditions is necessary before considering the issue resolved. He expressed confidence in Cambodia's compliance, citing the presence of ASEAN and international witnesses at the signing as a deterrent against any potential reneging. The ASEAN Summit's involvement, particularly the witnessing by figures such as ASEAN Chair Anwar Ibrahim and President Trump, underscores the declaration's importance and the expectation of adherence by all parties involved.
