Vietnam actively contributes to strengthening ASEAN solidarity: Indonesian scholar

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s attendance at the 42nd ASEAN Summit and related activities from May 9-11 in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia, affirmed that Vietnam has made positive, proactive, and responsible contributions to strengthening ASEAN solidarity and effectively responding to challenges, an Indonesian scholar has said.

In a recent interview granted to the Vietnam News Agency’s resident correspondents in Indonesia, Veeramalla Anjaiah, senior researcher of the Centre for Southeast Asia Studies (CSEAS), said at the summit, PM Chinh emphasised Vietnam’s efforts and wishes to work with other ASEAN member states in building the identity, value, vitality and reputation of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and deepen relations with ASEAN countries.

The Vietnamese PM participated in ASEAN meetings with stronger development goals and aspirations, the scholar said.

According to Anjaiah, PM Chinh said that strengthening solidarity and unity should be the key task for an independent and self-resilient ASEAN. He called for efforts to advance the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) and regional connectivity.

To achieve the goal of and aspirations for peace, security, stability and prosperity, PM Chinh appealed to ASEAN member countries to join hands in building self-resilience and solidarity, unlock development resources, and raise breakthrough initiatives to build the ASEAN Community, helping the bloc turn itself into a growth epicentre regionally and globally, the scholar said.

PM Chinh’s proposals received support and were appreciated by other ASEAN leaders, he noted.

Assuming ASEAN’s chairmanship by Indonesia in 2023 is a very important step to run the ASEAN at a critical juncture in the context of tough time given the Russian-Ukraine conflict, high inflation, global slowdown and tensions between the US and China in the Indo-Pacific region, he said.

With a theme of “ASEAN matters, an epicentrum of growth”, Indonesia is leading ASEAN with the expectation of promoting concrete and inclusive cooperation to ease tensions in the Indo-Pacific region, he added.

The expert also highly valued the ASEAN Outlook in the Indo-Pacific launched in 2019, which is aimed at peace, security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

ASEAN must prioritise open and inclusive dialogue and cooperation to maintain regional peace, he stressed./.

Vietnamese farm produce introduced at largest agri-food fair in Northern Ireland

Vietnamese agricultural products have been introduced at Balmoral Show 2023, Northern Ireland’s largest annual agri-food fair that took place from May 10-13 at Balmoral Park of Lisburn city.

The Vietnamese booth featured famous local food brands such as Ong Cua ST25 rice, Huong Sen food, Seahorse King frozen food, Saigon Lager beer, Golden Roast HaiFong coffee, L’amant coffee, and Hon Me Hau Loc shrimp paste.

Balmoral Show is a 154-year-old traditional trade fair of the UK’s Northern Ireland region.

This year’s fair displayed different kinds of goods and services, from local agricultural specialties and animal feed to technology, machinery, and agricultural materials.

According to Vietnamese Trade Counselor in the UK Nguyen Canh Cuong, the Balmoral Show 2023 drew more than 100,000 visitors, providing a good chance for Vietnamese firms to introduce their products to local consumers.

It was also an opportunity for Vietnamese agriculture and food businesses to explore the consumption trend of Northern Ireland, and seek potential customers, he said.

Cuong said that earlier, Vietnam also joined the UK Food & Drink Shows, the largest of its kind in the UK in late April, helping popularise Vietnamese agricultural products in Northern Ireland and the UK in general.

Within the framework of the fair, a meeting was held between Vietnam and Northern Ireland representatives to discuss bilateral cooperation potential, especially in agriculture and food trading.

The two sides also discussed a plan to form and send a trade mission of Northern Ireland to Vietnam later this year to put forth bilateral cooperation./.

Coach Chung pleased as women’s team reach 10th SEA Games final

Head coach Mai Duc Chung was happy as the Vietnamese women’s team overcame Cambodia and secured their 10th SEA Games final match.

The defending champions won 4-0 over the hosts in the semi-final at the Smart RSN Stadium in Phnom Penh.

“We are glad as we qualified for the final,” said Chung at the post-match briefing. “This semis was a little difficult for us but we won.”

“Cambodia have progressed a lot and we respect them. In this match, my players listened to the instructions from the coaching board; winning and no injuries and bookings.”

Vietnam will play Myanmar in the final on May 15. Myanmar came from behind to beat title candidates Thailand 4-2 at the Army Stadium.

“Vietnam met Myanmar in the group round,” said Chung. “We knew each other so the rematch will be difficult.”

“We watched their semi-finals. They were led 2-0 and fought back to win 4-2. Football is a battle. We have to use our strong points to attack in their weak points to win. The luckier team will win the match.”

Chung added that his players were asked to stay focused and work hard for the final.

“We should not look down on them because of beating them in the group stage,” he said. “We have to forget that game to focus fully on the final. The team’s goal has always been the same. Try each match to take the final victory.”

On the other side, coach Gao Fulin did not expect such a big loss for Cambodia.

“My players tried hard,” said Gao. “We lost 4-0 but I hope they can learn from this match. Vietnam are strong with technical and experienced players while mine are still young.”

“We are in different level of quality but in the future Cambodia can play equally with Vietnam, I hope.

“We will do better in the match with Thailand. We have developed remarkably. Players work and understand each other better. It is the reason why we earned a berth in the semi-final.”

The final will be played on May 15 with Cambodia meeting Thailand earlier in the bronze medal playoff./.

U22 Vietnam lose 2-3 to U22 Indonesia in men’s football semifinal of SEA Games 32

Vietnam lost 2-3 to Indonesia in the men’s football semifinal of SEA Games 32 on May 13 despite playing with more men in the second half.

The Vietnamese team will still have a chance in the bronze medal match against either Thailand or Myanmar.

In the 6th minute, Nguyen Van Do had a freekick near the box and decided to make a pass inside the box, but no Vietnamese player could get to the ball.

Four minutes later, from a powerful throw-in, Komang Trisnanda scored the opening goal for Indonesia with a header.

In the 17th minute, Ramadhan Sananta sprinted down the right flank and tried to take a shot from a hard angle, but Vietnamese goalkeeper Quan Van Chuan made a clean save.

After conceding, Vietnam have been trying to increase pressure on Indonesia’s side of the field in search for an equaliser.

Kaffa went up high and made a cross inside right at the edge of the box, but goalkeeper Chuan was quick to block it.

In the 36th minute, Duc Phu made a cross from the left flank, which found Nguyen Van Tung and his header was too difficult for goalkeeper Ernando Ari to make any save. This was Tung’s fifth goal in SEA Games 32 and he was currently the top scorer of the tournament.

The score was 1-1 after the first 45 minutes with header goals from Komang Trisnanda and Nguyen Van Tung.

In the 54th minute, from another throw-in by Arhan, goalkeeper Chuan pushed the ball out and it found Marselino Ferdinan, who took a shot from outside of the box. His shot deflected off an Indonesia player before going in.

In the 60th minute, Arhan tried to stop Duc Phu from starting an attack and the referee didn’t hesitate to send him off with a second yellow. This can be a turning point for Vietnam.

Vietnam would have at least 30 minutes to turn the tie around with more men than Indonesia. Coach Philippe Troussier made another two substitutions to increase firepower. Indonesia subbed an attacker out for a defender to protect their lead.

In the 79th minute, a cross inside the box and Dinh Xuan Tien’s pressure from behind made Amiruddin Arrizqi score an own goal and the score was 2-2. Vietnam had a huge advantage to win the game.

In the 84th minute, Vietnam’s Khuat Van Khang got a chance to score from a volley but the ball went straight into keeper Ari’s hands.

Three minutes later, Van Tung got another dangerous header but goalkeeper Ari made a good save.

In the 6th added minute of the second half, from a counter-attack, Muhammad Taufany finished from outside the box and brought Indonesia the goal.

Losing to Indonesia, Vietnam will play against either Thailand or Myanmar in the bronze medal match three days later./.
